I am able to see the long parade of graduates from West Yadkin who have gone on before us. l see them marching over the hills of yesterday. Some of you may be in this parade. There are many names on the roster of this school. Many of these are in a cti ve occupations over the world today, and some have gone to a far cou ntry from which there is no return--they gave their lives in service to their country and for l'l'19. principles which they were taught at this institution. It is good to look backward to the progress this school has made. We see the change from the traditional little red school house with its bell calling the scholars to reading, writing, and arithmetic to this modern set-up with all its new methods of teaching and study. l know there are philosophers who constantly propound the doctrine of never, never, look back. They harp on the evils of looking back, but only by looking back can we appreciate the advantages of the present and the unlimited opportunities of the future. But since I am the historian of the class of I957 I shall not look fartherin the past than our own immediate history. I might say this is the melancholy tale of us, The Seniors of I957. First, let's take a hindsight view into our green eye days. Our first yearin high school was known as oursalad days, you know, young and green and all mixed up. We were green but growing in those days. We were boostingeighty-four in number that year. Martha Steelman was our class president, Jewell Key our secretary and treasurer, Roger Allred our vice-president, and our reporter was Wanda Vanhoy. lt was in our Freshman year that Richard Money began to show signs of growing into a strong man because he made the football team. He was a reg- ular Pop-eye, spinach and all. Another green Freshman, Roger Al lred, was also on the football team. We were also well represented on the basketball teams by Marcella Crater, Martha Steelman, Richard Money, Bobby Allen, and Roger Allred, who was also on the baseball team. Laura Garner was yelling on the sidelines in all the sports as she represented our class as a Cheerleader. There is always a beauty in every class, and to represent us in the H omecom i ng A.ctivity we chose Wanda Vanhoy. To helpus through those salad days were twovery capable faculty members, Mr. Joe Cash and Mr. Eugene Nelson. Thus, our first year in high school had ended. Then came our second year in high school. Those were our wise eye days. We were regular wise owls that year. In fact, the wonder grew how our small heads could contain all we knew. Jewell Key was our class president, and she led us success- fully and wisely in our many activities. Of course, you know we made high marksand astounded our teachers with our inven- tions in making excuses. Marcella Crater was our se creta ry, and never was there a more wiser or more efficient secretary. This year we were well represented in football by a large number. Those lu cky boys were Roger Henderson, Richard Money, Roger Allred, Sammy Tucker, Darrell Vanhoy, Bobby Allen, Tony Royall, and Billy Edwards. I must also say that these boys did some brilliant work for the team, which made our class very proud of them. This year Marcella Crater, Martha Steelman, Jackie Whitaker, Richard Money and Bobby Allen were the brilliant ones who made the basketba I I teams. Again our only loudmouth was Laura Garner, who did a great job on the Cheerleading squad. On the baseball team this year we were happy and very proud to boast that we had six boyson the team. Marcella Crater wasa lucky girlto severalgirls, as she was selected to be a Majorette. To showthat we were trulya brilliant class we had nine to be invited in the Beta Club. Again, I think we madea wise choice in selecting two girls to representour class in the Homecoming Activities, as we chose Shelby J. Milholland and Jackie Wh i ta ke r. Joe Allen was one of those trusted boys who was selected to bring us safely to and from school. Our sponsors for this wise year were Mr. Joe Cash and Mr. C. R. Wright. Time passed quickly, and our eyes changed from wise to sharp. We truly made history in our Junior year. We were sharp in all our dealings, sharp enough to win many honors such as: Marcella Crater and Martha Steelman made the first string on the girl's bask etba I I team, we placed ten boys on the football team. Laura Garner Vanhoy was elected Chief Cheerleader while Jackie Wh it aker and Wilmoth Money were along helping Laura with all the yells. We were sharp enough to foolour teachers because we made record-breaking high grades. Once again Martha Steelman was chosen as our class president, with other officers as follows: vice-president, Leon White, secretary, Jackie Whitaker, and treasurer, Betty Swaim. We chose Martha Steelman, Geraldine Pardue, and Leon White to be our representatives on the newly-formed Student Council. Again Marcella Crater was selected to be a Majorette. Joe Allen and Roger Henderson were bus drivers from the Junior Class. Miss Mildred Beamer and Mr. E. D. Nelson were our Junior sponsores. At last we became Seniors. Life became very spectacular to us. How bright our eyes were. There were forty-six of these bright-eyed Seniors. At this stage of our school life we began to look our yesterdays in the face, kiss them goodby, and for- get them. We were Seniors. Our eyes became bright and lustrious, and we saw glorious visions. We even began to look like Seniors. We elected our officers. Betty Swaim was our president, Richard.Money ourvice-president, Jewell Key our secretary, and Laura G. Vanhoy was our treasurer. Leon White was Editor-in-Chief of our annual, and Geraldine Pardue was Business Manager. Jackie Whitaker wasa lucky girl as she was elected chief cheerleader. Billy Edwards, Sammy Tucker, Tony Royall, Roger Henderson, Bobby Allen, Roger Allred, Donald Groce, Joe Allen, and Richard Money were outstanding as great play- ers on the football team. The lucky ones to make the basketball teams were Martha Steelman, Marcella Crater, Bobby Allen, Tony Royall, and Richard Money. This year Marcella Crater was Chief Maiorette and Martha Steelman was 'elected president of the Student Council. This year we chose Jackie Whitaker and Judy Angell as the Senior Attendants to our Hom e comin g Queen, Jewell Key, whois alsoa memberof the SeniorClass. This year our faithful bus driversare Joe Allen, Roger Henderson, Larry Crater, James Lee Spann, and Donald Anthony. We had two grand and wonderful sponsores, Mrs. Helen S.Wishon and Mr. James Mathis. We also took that long awaited for Washington trip. Everyone had loads of fun. We shall always cherish our past experiences and happy days in this school. The magic spectacles have given us the privilege of looking backward. PATTY BURGESS Historian CLASS PROPHECY I see before mea remarkable vision--mountains, mountains like AIps on Alps arise. Somebody is evidently to pass his, or her, life in the mountains, but who can tell who it is, or where the mountains are? Are they the Rockies, the Alleghanies, the Lehighs, the Tennessees, or the White Mountains? Ah, now I see, I see, for there is a big C spread all over the mountains. So, as I see a C it must be California. Ah, lucky boy or girl who is to live in California. But who is it? Surley it must be revealed to me. Yes, indeed, now he comes into view. It is Donald Anthony as sure as I am alive. Who could mistake that noble form, and-and-yes, it is true, that bril- Iiant red hair. But what is he doing? Ah, now I see it plainly. He is picking oranges, so, of course, he is the happy owner of a California ranch. But this vision is passed and I must wait for another. What is this? Oh, see the crowds, crowds, men, women, and child- renl But what are they trying to do? Oh, there is the President's mansion, the far-famed White House. Now the scene shifts and l am shown the famous East Room inside of it. Greeting the rapidly coming people is a beautifully arrayed woman. Who is she? Surely it cannot be--yes, it is our old classmate Jewell Key. Grown older, of course, but decidely handsomer. Again the scene shifts and I see a man on a shoemaker's bench patching away on a shoe. How faithfully he is working and what a fine job he is doing. I tell you he is some patcher. Now he looks up and I see it is our old friend Joe Allen. Well, I always knew in whatever business he might engage he would make it a success, whether it be patching shoes or teachingtrigo- nometry. Now who will be next, I wonder. Oh, here is a woman on a stage gorgeouly arrayed. What can she be doing? Making a speech on Woman in Politics. No, she opens her mouth too wide for that, and keeps it open too long. Ah, Isee musicians near her. She is a famous singer. Who in the world can she be? Oh, now I see, it is no less a person than our old classmate Betty Ruth Swaim. And now, who comes next? Why, it's two fine toe dancers. They must be Laura Vanhoy and Jackie Whitaker. Of course, they who were so decorously out in the line. Again the scene changes and a wedding is taking placein a lovely church. The bride and groom are Judy Angell and Tony Royall. The minister performing the ceremony is Larry Crater. Theglaring lights of 42nd. Street and Broadway makesit hard for me to read the sign I see. O yes, Patricia Oliver is star- ring in THE ZEIGFIELD FOLLIES. Her training began right here in West Yadkin School. A Beauty Parlor with the sign Nothing Is Impossible I see Wilmoth Baker as manager and sea ted under the hair dryer and permanent waving machine are Ann Macy and Judy Procter, who must be challenging her to make good her slogan. In the West on a ranch I see Roger Allred living happy filling his pockets with gold and his body with health to be gained from the outdoors of the West. In an exclusive girls' school I see John Frank Long as Dean of Women. John Frank was the most timid boy in the class. A change has certainly come over him. I see that a syndicated column entitled ADVICE TO THE LOVELORN appears in all the leading dai ly papers in the United States. lt seems that the writer is Bobby Allen. I The scene changes again and I see that our old friend Vivian Long is ma nager ofa Day Nursery in Winston-Salem. H er devotion to children must have prompted her to take up this work. In a large store I see a new style expert, very chic. It is Roseleen Brown and she seems to be enjoying it very much. In Paris many buyers are grouped around the office of a great designer of mi I I i n ery. Who is he? Oh, I see, it is Ovid Everidge and the buyers are Sarrmy Tucker, James Lee Spann, Mary Leigh Whitlock, Helen Burchette, Dean Caudle, and Sheloma Welborn. Now what comes next, I wonder. Oh, it seems that a celebration is taking place. It is a celebration of the dedication of a new state building. The speaker is United States Senator Richard Money. It looks as if excitement prevails naw. Yes, a mill strike is taking place in Boston. The owners of the mill, Billy Ray Edwards and Billy Parks, are rushing here and there trying to quiet the mob. They will succeed for their cause is just. I see that Geraldine Pardue is making a success in her career as an author. It seems that her best seller and most popular book is THE SMALL CHILDREN. Again the scene changes and I see Faye Long. But what is she doing? Oh, I can see clearly now and she has become a great potrait painter, specializing in magazine covers. It seems that Roger Henderson owns and directs a Television show. Donald Groce is his outstanding and famous comedian. His star role of THE CAMPUS CUT-UP has made both of them noted entertainers. Who is next? Oh, it is Marcella Crater and she is modeling bathing suits. It seems thatshe has won the nationalswimming contest due to her appearance in bathing suits and a designer of note in this field. Who is this that owns his own private clinic and is consultanting in psychiatry. It is Leon White and most of his patients are wealthy society girls. Wilda Jean Cheek and Faye Stokes are nurses in his clinic and are very efficient. I see that Shelby Oliver and Frankie Cain are the leading ladies in the play, TWINKLE TOES, the latest show on tele- vision. I guess that Mary Frances Webster's and Virginia Renegar's interest lies in being a housewife and they have proved it by owning their own dress shops in Winston-Salem. Now I see Wanda Vanhoy modeling evening clothes and wraps, and who should she be modeling them for, but rich customers. I see that after four years at Appalachian, amid studies, good times, and boy friends that Martha Steelman has returned to good old West Yadkin where she is a teacher and basketball coach. Again the scene changes and I see thatJimmy Brown has become the President of the Gulf Oil Refinery Company in Texas. Along with being a housewife. I see that Vetral Swaim and C har I otte Talley are both owning their own beauty salon in Greensboro and have become famous for their becoming hair designs. I see that Patty Burgess along with keeping house for her husband, owns her own flower shop in Winston-Salem. And last of all I see that Oleen Turner owns a fashion shop in New York and has made a success so far.
