This book has caught glimpses here and there of our activi- ties at West Yadkin High, and in years to come we hope these memories will not Fade from your mind. ln later years while turning the pages of this book, we hope you will recall your many smiles, sorrows, and dreams of l956. We have enjoyed putting this book together as a reminder of your school days, and we hope you will support our advertisers, who have helped to make this book possible. HATTIE GAYLE LONG Editor-In-Chief ROGER CALLOWAY Business Manager SENIOR CLASS HISTORY On a warm, autumn day in September 1952, a group of young people, 81 in number, set out on a journey, their destin- ation, a high school education. Soon we faced the dark, forbidding land of the Freshman. After stumbling about in the dark for sometime, we found ourselves hopelessly stuck in the midst of English, Civics, Math, and Health classes. A cold wind sent shivers of discouragement through us, when on October 26, 1952, we lost one of our nicest classmates, Maxine Turner, who was 'killed in an automobile accident, also we began to be discouraged when a few failures began to show up among some of the students and a few of them began to drop out of school. To make our spirits a little high, we decided to elect class of- ficers. Bobby Wagoner was elected as president, Barbara Sparks as vice-president, Betty Carol Johnson as secretary and treas- urer, and Cynthia Gough was our song leader. There were also a few who took part in the sports events of the year. Jo Ann Swaim represented our class in the Home- coming game of the year. Our homeroom teachers this year were Mr. Joe Cash and Mrs. J. F. Bivins. For nine long months we struggled through this land of darkness, but finally reached one lap of our journey, and became Sophomores. In September of 1953 we again set out on our journey toward a high school education, realizing that we had reached the wide and swift flowing river that we as Sophomores must cross before completing this year. Bobby Wooten was our class presi- dent and the captain who directed us on our way across, Hattie Gayle Long, our secretary and treasurer kept the records, Jeanette Wallace was our vice-president, Sonny Davis the song leader, and Jerry Dickerson was our reporter. This year was an important one for some of our classmates. These people received an invitation to join the Beta Club: Roger Calloway, Bobby Wooten, Hattie Gayle Long, Shelby Shore, Shirley Ball, Anne Long, Jeanette Wallace, Cynthia Gough, Peggy Mullis, Kenneth Cheek, and Bobby Wagoner. The Betas also gave a play called, Finder's Creepers, a mys- tery in three acts. Our class this year was represented in the Homecoming game by an attractive girl, Jeanette Wallace, also we were rep- resented on the cheering side by Barbara Sparks, our only Sophomore' cheerleader. Thus ends the difficult journey of the Sophomore, with our advisors and homeroom teachers, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cheek. When we had crossed the wide and swift river from our Sophomore year, we reached the shore and realized we had step- ped upon the soil of the meadow, the land of the Junior. We, again in September 1954, started out haPPily on our raod to a high school education. Even though our path was rough and rugged at times, we were happy in knowing we had only a few more stepping stones ahead before we would reach our goal. So we elected our officers at the beginning of the fall term, Bobby Wooten was again elected president, Jeanette Wallace, vice-President,Roseleen Brooks, treasurer, Cynthia Gough, secretary, and Harold Ashley, reporter. During this part of our journey, many interesting things happened to us. We learn- ed lots about different people and places. We also gave our Junior play called, Drums of Death, a three-act mystery. This year our representatives in the Homecoming game were: Barbara Sparks and Mary Frances Gough. Harold Clay Johnson was Co-Captain of the football team, and a very outstanding player on the team. As our year hurries on, we find ourselves working on the Junior-Senior Banquet, and on April 23, 1955, the Juniors gave a banquet in the cafeteria for the Seniors of 1955. We also on this part of the journey selected our class marshals, who are Anne Long, Chief, Hattie Gayle Long, Shelby Shore, Bobby Wooten, Bobby Wagoner, and Roger Calloway. At last our road has led us to a mountain, and with our Sponsors, Mr. E. D. Nelson and Mr. H. C. Moretz, Jr., we stand facing the one more lap of our joumey, the climb to the peak of the mountain of education. Once again in September of 1955 we began our journey toward a high school education. This was to be our final lap, this is the mountain peak of our lives. Our class officers are: Bobby Wooten, President, Hattie Gayle Long, Vice-President, Mary Frances Gough, Secretary, and Shelby Shore, Treasurer. This year is the busiest of all our years since starting this journey. Anne Long is the Editor of the WEST YADKIN Hl- LITES and Shelby Shore is Feature Editor. The members of the WHISPERING PINES Staff are: Hattie Gayle Long, Editor-in- Chief, Roger Calloway, Business Manager, Shelby Shore, Assistant Editor, Bobby Wooten, Assistant Business Mvf-ager. The other senior members are: Jeanette Wallace, Peggy Mullis, Cynthia Gough Cain, Anne Long, Bobby Wagoner, Albert Ever- idge, Shirley Ball, and Kenneth Cheek. We also selected our Superlatives on this lap of our journey. They too should be recognized in this recording of our journey. So these seem to be some of the outstanding members of the class, but whether we all have a title pinned to us or not we can all be outstanding in some way. There are also several seniors who are outstanding in sports. This year the Homecom- ing Queen came from our class. She is Mary Frances Gough, who was crowned by Harold Johnson, captain of the football team. Our attendants were Jeanette Wallace and Barbara Dickerson. ln climbing the mountain, we have learned many new truths and better ways of living. Here, we as Seniors have a view of the world, spread out before us as a book waiting for its pages to be turned. We now face the many problems that lie at our feet, once we walk out from among our classmates, into the future. We are proud to welcome three new students to join us on our journey toward a high school education. They are: Barbara Dickerson, formerly of Jonesville, Kenneth Hudson of Nashville, Kansas, and Nettie Ann Wood of Cooleemee. As l look from the top of this peak, l see trails, forty-five of them. Each of us must take one of these winding trails and go about through the valleys and hills to find a different kind of life and profession. May each of you, as you take the trail to your life of service and usefulness, find happiness and success. As we near our journey's end, we would like to give credit to our sponsors, Mrs. Helen Wishon and Mr. C. R. Wright, who have helped us to make our journey toward a high school education a success. Now I would like to say that all these things actually happened to us in our high school life. We have learned to work together, to play together, and to cooperate together in all our various activities, on our journey. All these sayings l have faithfully kept and recorded. I have now read them to you as they actually happened. Thus ends the history of the journey we have made to Senior Land. HATTIE GAYLE LONG Historian CLASS PROPHECY Last night as I sat alone in my study enioying the twilight and my most wonderful thought, I heard a soft rustle behind me and turning I saw near my chair a queer little creature which I could not classify. It wasn't strictly human and yet I had never before in all my study of Natural History seen any creature even distantly resembling it. Before I had time to ask the customary questions, When and where were you born? Are you black or white? Single or mar- ried? What is your favorite breakfast food? the strange visitor asked in a mighty voice, the first notes of which made me leap from my chair, Are you the student who has been selected as the prophet of West Yadkin High? If you are, the creature went on quickly, before I had time to utter a word, l see by your looks that it is indeed necessary that I should help you. It was a wise act when I was sent to you. Sent to me? I eiaculated, my curiosity overcoming my fear. By whom? Ah, said the shape, I perceive that you have not heard of the new movement among the curricula. The curricuIa? I repeated stupidly. Yes, was the quick reply, the curricula of all the schools in the U. S. Then, I exclaimed, l suppose you are a curriculum? Of course. I see you know a little Latin, was the angry reply, and the creature continued: We have united together to have the poor overworked teachers and superintendents at commencement time. So I detailed to assist you in a prophecy for the West Yadkin graduating class. So here goes. First and foremost, Mable Henderson will become the President of the United States. Hold on, I exclaimed, don't you know that is a girl's name? What of it? was the retort, now that women have the ballot they'll soon relieve the men of the few duties which have been left them and the women presidents will be as common as queens. But I have no time to argue about this now. l'm clue at another school in a few minutes, so here goes. Leroy Pinnix will become the most famous cook in the whole wide world. O, hold onI I exclaimed, you don't seem to have any idea of the significance of names. Where have you lived all your life not to know that Leroy Pinnix is a boy's name? Of course, but if the girls are all presidents and other officials, the men will have to do the cooking, I reckon, unless you think we will live without eating in those wonderful days. And now please don't interrupt me again, no matter what I may say. Harold Ashley will become a Biologist and will discover some of nature's deepest secrets, such as, why an oyster isn't a tadpole, and similiar never before solved problems. Leon Collins is to be an Artistic Milliner. Now don't tell me there are no men milliners. Perhaps there are none at the present, but since the cubists and their ilk, realists and impressionists will have destroyed art, the only outlet for man 's artistic nature must be in bonnets at SlO0.00 per, and there will be money in it at that, for the smaller the bonnet and bigger the price, the more crazy women there will be to buy them. , Cynthia Cain will become an architect, and will design a tabernacle for Billy Graham, which will be the eighth wonder of the world. O, come now, I said, all out of patience, you are getting crazy again - a woman architect? Certainly, the creature answered sharply, no man could do it. Men's visions are too narrow. It will need a woman's breadth of thought, her airy visions, etc. l will conceive the point, I answered gruffly, Go on, who's next? Roger Calloway will run a large steam laundry in Chicago. A washerwoman with all his talents! I groaned. This is too much! It takes talent to run a model laundry, and this one will be the best in the world. Jimmy Brown will run a large soap factory in Philadelphia. . Why Philadelphia? I asked gruffly. Because it is said to be the cleanest city in the world and it needs a lot of soap.
