Z K 646 Nineteen sixty-five will mark the fortieth anniversary of the Beta Kappa Chi as a social fraternity on the Tech campus. During this period, the Betas have promoted fellowship and brotherhood among the members and have strived to provide an atmosphere of improved character and knowledge. The Betas are the largest social fraternity on campus with a first semester membership of 54 ac- tive brothers. Many members were active in campus affairs. The president and treasurer of l.F.C., the treasurer of Student Council, the president, vice president, and treasurer of the senior class, and the president and vice president of the junior class were Betas. Two Betas were selected for Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. Sandy Matthews was the Miss Golden Bear candidate sponsored by the Betas and their sister sorority, Sigma Iota Chi. The Beta-Sigma homecoming float placed first in class B competition. A number of social functions were sponsored by the Betas during the past year. These included the Playboy Ball, the Beta Sleigh Ride, the Beta Snow Ball, and several house parties. Mr. Don Wil- burn and Mr. Lowell Shuck were Beta advisors. 40 ' 1-s Row 7: Charles Miller, Bill Davis, .Ievine Bowling, Paul Arnstein, Steve Barrickman, Percy Osborne, Roy Ace Pruett Row 2: George Cochran, Lee Musik Frank Simmons Robert Ryloff, Kent Hawking, Charles Bayless, Bob lrwin, L. Working, learning, and living together to achieve this goal has distinguished the fraternity as a campus leader. Psi Delta's intramural team won the softball cham- pionship and the overall championship. All candidates sponsored by the fraternity for student council offices were elected. The offices were president, vice-president, and the four class representatives. Mrs. Bob Fisher, currently Mrs. W.V.I.T., was also sponsored by Psi Delta. Seventeen brothers repre- sented various campus organizations at Tech's annual leadership convention. Achievements for 1965 include election of Psi Delta candidate for Miss Golden Bear-Connie Meadows-and several class officers. The fraternity's entry in the homecoming parade won first prize in Class A float competition. Five brothers were elected to Who's Who in American Colleges and Uni- versities. Sigmas are very active on Tech's campus. Sandy Matthews was a candidate for Miss Golden Bear and WVlT's representative at the Alpine Festival held at Blackwater Falls. Jeannie Bayless, Sheila Pomeroy, Kaye Griffiths, and Patsy Frantz served the Golden Bears as cheerleaders. Three Sigmas were named to WHO'S WHO IN AMERICAN COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES- Charlotte Kincaid Arnold, Esther Bryant, and Karin Morris. As such, we operate on an equal basis with T69 other active Sig Ep chapters across the continental United States. Sigma Phi Epsilon sponsors more social events on a yearly basis than any other Tech fraternity or organization. It is our belief that academic knowledge must be tempered with social activities in order to maintain the fine fraternity which we possess. This yearfs social calendar was comprised of the annual freshman week street dance, the Beat- nik Ball, first annual Christmas Dance, the Queen of Hearts formal, Founders Day Banquet and dance, the annual Hobo Ball, second semester pledge class dance, the Sig Ep Sweetheart Ball, and to wind up each year of school, we offer Tech's largest social event of the year: the Sig Ep Luau. Six of our free weekends each year are taken up by closed house parties. During the past school year, we were also active in helping support a camp for crippled chil- dren and sponsoring an annual Christmas party for over 60 underprivileged children. 1: ll l l Q ll 1 ,v E . . - ...av .cf ii- , ' I: Dennis Guth, Lee Squires, Don Farley, Bruce McCoy, Jim Buchanan, Tony Taylor Row 2: Thomas C. Despite the screaming pressure -of approaching deadlines, the relentless pressure of important stories, and the late demands of disinterested superiors, we kept one goal constantly in mind. Despite our endless pleading, begging, demand, and threatening for newspaper copy we tried to keep one idealistic goal. We tried to give the Collegian a distinctly collegiate flavor. Not the factual drabness of the daily chronicle, nor the irresponsible glibness of a scholastic experimentor, but a truthful retelling of Tech news and student expression in words attractive to discriminating college readers. i 1 I Q '44-1 Qifqlfllllflii I ' im' i 59 s ' i N f'-xii. . Va. 25304 Phone-925-3 I4 I mm- a This page brings to an end the cadence of West Virginia Institute of Technology for the 1965-66 school year. Some of the familiar subiects were not included in this year's Bear Tracks due to the deadline date. New and interesting subjects have been added, we hope, for a pleasant change. The preparation of an annual from its creation to its completion requires a great deal of team effort. Those who worked especially diligently on this loook were our photographer Fred Jeffcoate, Lyndall Miller, Ann Mann, Ralph Strope, Don Marikovics, Eddie Duncan, Annette Sabath, Gail Settle, and our assistant editor Watenia Wright. Special thanks to Nolan Kessler who designed the original Bear Tracks shield for our cover. We hope you have enjoyed this pictorial history of teacher's cadence during the year. Sincerely, Edward H.
