For the most part, we have en- joyed it; for the rest. . . Several people deserve thanks: There are the Philosophers, who will no doubt recognize their work. They made second year worthwhile. Thanks are also due to staff artists Mikey and Ricky Eye. Thanks to everyone in the academy who voted for us(Oh. Wrong speech.) We hope you enjoy this book. We plan to. Warren Point Dr. Point is a Charleston native who was educated at West Virginia University and the Harvard Medical School. He was in the practice of Gastroenterology in the Boston area for several years before returning to Charleston in 1977 as a full time member of the faculty of the West Virginia University School of Medicine. This year he will step down from his present post as Director of Medicine, Charleston Division. As a clinician Dr. Point has helped bring to West Virginia the highest quality of medical care, and as a scholar and educator he has insured that West Virginia and the country will continue to have quality health care for generations to come. He has not only imparted to us the knowledge necessary to be top-rate physicians, but has also passed on the wisdom necessary to cope with the changing face of medicine in a humane and compassionate manner. 10 CLASS OF 1988 11 Sm So many men, so little time. Kingston, nY You ' re sure the first payment isn ' t due til 1992? In the fall of 1984, a group of ninety young men and women were assembled in Morgantown, des- tined to become the Class of 1988. What the Ad- missions Committee didn ' t realize was that they had unleashed upon an unsuspecting world The Philosophers. As time went on, it became evident that despite the lectures in the front of the room a good deal of learned discussi on was going on among The Philosophers in the back of the room — especially when the lights were out. Philosophy 101 tackled many of the difficult questions of life. Highlights of the answers are presented here. k i f i ' f Blonds only need apply. Well, Qreg, it wouldn ' t smell like that if you d wear gloves. Weston: We ' re looking for a few good men. We ' re here to learn how to make keys in order to open a door — once accomplished we find ourselves in a room with four walls (bare) and another door, which we again have to figure out how to open ... As the last door is opened we find ourselves in a train station, hustled onto a train that imme- diately leaves the station. All we can do is shove our faces against the window and watch the world pass on by. Later (about one semester later) we are allowed to get off the train and participate in the world for about three weeks (usually consisting of being in rooms and opening doors) after which we ' re back on the train. ft fill Read the sign. The Health Department said what? Return to Sender. asdf jkl; Home positions, BEQiri! 1 The circular life tineory was expounded upon in the year 4265 B.C. by the great Hindu guru, Havnagoodtime. Even though he lived thousands of years before the locomotive age, he likened the journey of life to a trip on a diesel freight train from Lincoln, Nebraska, to Boise, Idaho. Each of the people we meet in life are represented by stops along the tracks. Those we don ' t ever get to know are cr oss-ties, which we pass over without consideration. Boi- se, then, is heaven, hell, orjust a stopover for another trip to Vancouver, British Columbia. To summarize the good gurus teachings: Cogito ergo choo-choo, pardon me boy. 5, Life ' s a bitch, then you die. Is this what they meant by rural medicine? I want a real bucking bronco. The faculty loves me, the nurses love me, and I love me. Watson and Crick showed definitively in 1963 that lunch is encoded on gene 37 on chromo- some 21; evil lunches are due to a homozy- gous, autosomal recessive trait. It is postulated that people who lack this so-called lunch gene altogether commonly go directly to the stacks on the second floor during noon-hour and skip lunch completely. Onset can be insidious. A medical mo- del is useful to explore the concept of evil in the world. It s not endogenous, it ' s infectious: propa- gated by sexist, racist, narcissistic socialization and enculturation; learned, acquired, reinforced. Mow many units to cover a fifth? 58 Why can t Russy read? Isn ' t this a bit much for chicken pox? Pathology lectures in and of themselves are not evil, it is only when they are connected with pathol- ogy exams that they become evil (otherwise we could just sleep through them and be none the worse off). This shows the pyramiding effect of evil. This was first demonstrated by Egyptian patholo- gists many moons ago but the significance of their work was never truly appreciated. Also, to equate sexism, racism, and narcissism with evil shows the ultimate corruption that has been perpetrated by medicine, for these people should be revered as high holy men. Annmarie, do you think Cathy will find out? The heart-shaped bathtubs at this place were great! I matched with Publisher ' s Clearing House — and Ed McMahon ran off with the check. 59 My, Tim, aren t we looking particularly short today! David Vaziri working. (We sent this picture to Ripley; he didn t believe it.) Interesting thought. It is estimated that the kidneys filter 1500 liters of fluid per day, while excreting only 1 or 2 liters. Does this have any relation with real life (or even this lecture)? Should we filter the 1500 liters of kidney information being passed through our minds and excrete only a very small amount ( .1%), or is it really that the .1% is actually being excreted into our notes and the rest is recirculated endlessly, aimlessly? Are we, therefore, being pissed off or pissed on? The Lady is a Tramp. When they told me this outfit would help me get girls . . . this wasn ' t exactly what 1 had in mind. Hey, Ssssailor!!! Is it not possible that we are being both pissed off and pissed on? It would seem that the former would follow from the latter. Consider the composition of urine: it ' s mostly water, but the small fraction that amounts to something is pretty obnoxious. Is that not how these lectures are constructed: mostly noth- ing with an occasional episode of something obnox- ious floating by? Therefore, we are being pissed on. And that pisses us off. Qood surgeons aren I l oni they re imported from Mars. nen! They ' re all married or gay — or worse yet Italian . The West Virginia Symphony? Careful, Qlen — you don t know where that foreign stuff has been. 61 When time passes, it passes into the reticuloen- dothelial system to be reduced to timiverdin, pro- ceeds to the liver via albumin to be conjugated. Then comes the direct passing of time into the gut. In a healthy individual time is recirculated in the enterohepatic circulation, and thus time really passes nowhere. We ' re not stuck in time, but time is stuck in us. Its none of your business where her other hand is. Does Santa really care if were naughty? Its all downhill from here. 62 I love these romantic dinners. Jay. ' 60 ' s Dropouts Eva, you can ' l put him in your suitcase to take back to Germany. Got no problems, man. One must not necessarily view sleeping in on a rainy morning and being dedicated as mutually exclusive entities. There are some medical stu- dents who often sit and think, then there are those of us who just sit. The latter group are versatile enough that they can accomplish this anywhere, at any time, whether sitting in a path lecture (of 1,000,000 different percentages, survival rates, in- cidences, etc., of meaningless bowel idiosyncra- sies) or in bed sleeping in on a rainy morning. I ' m the Michael Jackson of Diet Coke. v-: v  ««V ' f Big Z, little e,r A too negative of an attitude simply cannot exist in a Pathology lecture. It is not a matter of who is in control (we all realize that the slide pro- jector itself is what controls the tempo of the lec- ture), but rather who actually knows what is going on. We students look to the professor for guid- ance, he looks to us for cues, we all look to the clock to reassure us that time is in fact passing. ■Read it in the book is a psychological technique used by lecturers when they sense that they are communicating on a 0% level, so as to make con- fused students believe that later on they will un- derstand the incomprehensible. Or maybe we still live in the primordial soup. RRR, no murmur, gallop, rub. no, you can t put it back. And you thought Dan couldn ' t get a date Big business typhoons. 64 The hands of surgeons, the minds of moles. Evei So :.:4dV«Jt«r . ' ' 4ai V Aliens. I know where we can get some reeely goood shiiit. Life s a beach — or something. More aliens. 1 think we may be part of a psychological test to measure the human threshold for confusion prior to reality dissociation. The lights on the ceiling are two- way mirrors. Every third slide has something remote- ly understandable in it so that we continue trying to understand the lecture. Also, the technique This is a favorite board question is utilized to endogenous- ly elevate norepinephrine plasma concentrations (making enhanced concentration ability). Perhaps the national Boards are a hoax, and the true purpose of this exercise in futility these last four years has been to separate us into various soup- types. At the front of the class are various concen- trates, and moving back one finds the more exotic ingredients — or The Philosophers. Will this pass Customs? 66 Mo, It s not Moundsville!
