It was o tremendous undertaking, and the finished product cannot re- flect the amount of time and effort involved. After enduring ignored photo deodlines, creativ- ity draughts, and threats of litigation, a few com- mitted people produced this book, while also completing their block exams, residency appli- cations, interviews, and rotations. I thank these people for their individual contributions, and for their willingness to give their time. We hope you enjoy the book — Sabrino Craigo, Editor Motk Thornton, Business Monoger John Stonley, Indispensable Jim McDermott, Involuoble Special thanks to Warren Point, M.D., faculty advisor, and to both Student Affairs Offices. Don Dlckmon, Angleo Moscoro, MSIII ' s WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY West Virginio University School of Medicine wos founded in 1912 when it offered the first two years of medical curriculum. The WVU Medical Center opened in 1957, and in 1961 the first M.D. degrees were oworded in West Virginia. Now, 75 yeors offer its beginning, the WVU School of Medicine graduates over 80 students each yeor, trains over 200 residents, ond is involved in the heolth care of most of West Virginia. The School of Medicines Basic Sci- ence Building is the home of most first ond second year students, and is the center for student and faculty research. The School of Medicine has two clinical compuses that ore the tertiory core centers for the mojority of the state. The WVU Medical Center In Morgan- town provides health core for over 14,000 inpatients and 147,000 outpatients each year, and provides a clinical experience for two- thirds of each class and training for 211 resi- dents. The Chorleston Division of the WVU Medical Center, in affiliation with Charleston Area Medical Center, provides health core for over 21,000 inpatients and 31,000 outpatients each year, and provides a clinical experience for one-third of each class ond 100 residents. Wheeling Hospital ond Ohio Valley Medical Center moke up the Wheeling Division, where students may complete fourth year electives. -r.; 11 I j 1 I i y T TA ' uui r SCHOOL OF MEDICINE A YEAR OF EXPANSION The 1986-87 year was one of growth ond expansion for the WVU School of Medicine. As the new 376 bed hospital began to take shape in Morgantown, the free-stonding Chestnut Kidge Psychiatric Hospitol come closer to completion, and plons were made for the future Cancer Center. In Charlestown, the 150 bed Kan- awho Valley Division opened as the first Women and Children ' s Hospital in West Virginia, while the Cancer Care Center of Southern WV and the Heart Institute of WV also became operational. The pre- viously established Health-Net Helicopter transport system mushroomed into a much used service, carrying neonatal, obstetrical, cardiac, and trauma patients from throughout the state to the WVU referral centers. WVU Medical Center ac- quired the state ' s first MRI, and CAMC installed o new lithotripter. The new fa- cilities of the WVU School of Medicine and the new technological resources continue to improve the quality of education and health care in West Virginia. Dr. Nugent joined the faculty OS assistant professor in 1961. In 1970 he was named chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery. Known and loved by students, residents, and pa- tients alike, the Doss is described as consistent, con- servative, and honest , possessing the qualities of in- tegrity, humility, and a tremendous sense of timing. Decouse of his retirement this year, the 1967 Pylon is dedicated to him,- It Is, in fact, his dedication to us, to the University, and to West Virginia for which we honor him here. Thank you. Dr. Nugent. r CLASS OF 1987 IN MEMORY Four years ago, 91 young men and women, many of them strangers, came together os classmates. As will often happen, persons of strong personal character soon become prominent figures in a group. Al Lewis was such a man. His personal warmth, his genuine interest in others, and most of all, his sense of humor, allowed Al to befriend many in a short while. He became o respected and well-loved member of our class, and his loss has touched each one of us. It Is our wish to honor the memory of our dear friend. 12 ■■.■: A Whot did you soy this wos?
