Although the WVU School of Medicine was founded In the early 1900 ' s to offer the first two years of medical curriculum, the school awarded its first M.D. degrees in 1961. Since the opening of University Hospital over 1500 physicians and dentists have com- pleted their residencies here. More than 2,000 patients are seen weekly in the 50 clinics, and the Emergency Department treats some 35,000 patients yearly. CONSTRUCTION BEGINS IN JUBILEE YEAR 1965 marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of University Hospital. The follov ing physiciaris hove remained on staff since the hospital ' s opening: Dr. Walter Moron, Surgery; Dr. Ed- mund Flink, Medicine; Dr. D. Franklin Milam, Urology; Dr. Herbert Warden, Surgery; and Dr. W. Eugene Klingberg, Pediatrics. If all goes as scheduled Ruby Memoriall Hos- pital will open its doors in December 1987. The new facility is named for the late Morgantown industrialist, J.W. Ruby, whose widow has giv- en the new hospital an $8 million gift. The ten-story replacement facility will con- foin 376 beds. The Jon Michael Moore Trauma Service will have a rooftop helipad, and one floor of the hospital will be known as the Chil- dren ' s Hospital, ond will include both Pediatric end Neonatal Intensive Care Units. In addition, plans are being developed for the construction of a Cancer Center and a Psychiatric Hospital. s: I Charleston Division The Charleston Division of the West Virginia University Medical Center was established in 1972 with the affiliation of WVU and the Charleston Area Medical Cen- ter.
