West Virginia University Office of the Dean 304 293-45 I I MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Congratulations! You have successfully completed a rigorous professional program and now hold the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Having earned this degree at West Virginia University will hold you in good stead throughout your medical career. The excellent showing of last year ' s graduates alone speaks to the quality of medical education here at WVU. I recently had the pleasure of reviewing the evaluations of the 1982 WVU graduates who have completed their first year of residency training. With only one or two exceptions, all were rated from very good to excellent. This is an astounding evaluation and reflects very strong medical school preparation. It reinforces my belief that WVU is a remarkable medical school, with particular strength in teaching. I think our teaching strength is the combined result of the quality of applicant whom we accept for medical education, the small size of the class which fosters student faculty interaction and, most important, an extremely dedicated faculty whose primary concern is high quality medical education. In short, I believe that you received one of the finest medical educations in the country, and that as the years go by, you will come to appreciate this more and more. Speaking on behalf of the medical faculty, we want you to know that we are very proud of you and expect you to be a credit to this medical school and the medical profession. We hope that - like so many of our other graduates - you will give us reason to be proud that you are among our medical alumni. We also hope that you will be strong proponents of high quality medical education. As you know, there is a crisis in medical education, precipitated by concern about the escalating cost of health care education. Unfortunately, the time, effort, and structural support required for high quality education defy the principles of cost efficiency. If we are to continue to be the kind of medical center that is a source of pride to West Virginia, we are going to need community, political, and private dollar support. We hope that you will be our emissaries and strong supporters in the future. Again, on behalf of the School of Medicine, best wishes for professional and personal success. Sincerely, T Richard A. DeVaul, M.D. Dean, School of Medicine

-■ West Virginia University Office of the Dean 304 347-1206 MESSAGE EROM THE DEAN On behalf of the Charleston Division, one of the component units of the West Virginia University Medical Center. I am pleased to write and extend the greetings of the faculty members and staff of the Charleston Division to the graduating class of 1984. The Division, based in a community based teaching hospital, has greatly enjoyed the presence of the medical students in recent years. A number of West Virginia University graduates have remained in residency posi- tions in Charleston and this has provided an exciting continuity as well as a positive educational and patient care experience for everyone; faculty members, the residency staff, and students. In our setting we have also had the opportunity to work with dentists, dental students, dental resi- dents, pharmacy students and doctors of pharmacy. We also participate in the development of the baccalaureate and masters level programs in nursing at the Charleston Division. Additionally, there are many nursing and allied health programs that are affiliated with the Charleston Area Medical Center. We look forward to continued close affiliation with you as you embark in your residency programs, some of you in Charleston and others in other parts of West Virginia or in other states. We wish you good fortune and hope to hear from many of you as your careers develop. Thomas W. Mou. M.D. Dean. Charleston Division WVU School of Medicine
