EDITORS ' PAGE Friends: Well, here it is in all its glory, the 1984 PYLON. If you don ' t like it, then we ' ll have to assume ultimate responsibility. However, if you do like it, there are several people who deserve credit. We especially want to thank our generous advertisers and patrons, without whose financial support we would have never made it past developing the first roll of film. A number of individuals merit special attention. Bob Heflin proved to be an eager and tireless worker who played a major role in several aspects of this production. If not for him, you might be reading this in 1988. Other classmates and under- classmen contributed their particular talents. Lance Matheny created the sketch of the pylons that adorns the cover and he and Jeff Neal are responsible for the faculty caricatures. Russ DeVore assisted with faculty contributions, John Leon helped with yearbook sales, and contributing photographers include Carol Johnson. Jon Murphy, Cynthia Point, and John Schaefer. In addition, many people donated candid snapshots along the way. From the start, it was our goal to make the 1984 PYLON representative of the many people and places encompassed by the WVU School of Medicine. We also wanted to add a few extras for the graduating class. We have enjoyed producing this edition of the PYLON. We hope that you share our enthu- siasm for it as you read ahead. i laUU

You have successfully completed a rigorous professional program and now hold the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Having earned this degree at West Virginia University will hold you in good stead throughout your medical career. The excellent showing of last year ' s graduates alone speaks to the quality of medical education here at WVU. I recently had the pleasure of reviewing the evaluations of the 1982 WVU graduates who have completed their first year of residency training. With only one or two exceptions, all were rated from very good to excellent. This is an astounding evaluation and reflects very strong medical school preparation. It reinforces my belief that WVU is a remarkable medical school, with particular strength in teaching. I think our teaching strength is the combined result of the quality of applicant whom we accept for medical education, the small size of the class which fosters student faculty interaction and, most important, an extremely dedicated faculty whose primary concern is high quality medical education. In short, I believe that you received one of the finest medical educations in the country, and that as the years go by, you will come to appreciate this more and more. Speaking on behalf of the medical faculty, we want you to know that we are very proud of you and expect you to be a credit to this medical school and the medical profession. We hope that - like so many of our other graduates - you will give us reason to be proud that you are among our medical alumni. We also hope that you will be strong proponents of high quality medical education. As you know, there is a crisis in medical education, precipitated by concern about the escalating cost of health care education. Unfortunately, the time, effort, and structural support required for high quality education defy the principles of cost efficiency. If we are to continue to be the kind of medical center that is a source of pride to West Virginia, we are going to need community, political, and private dollar support.
