DATE DUE ' DEMCO. INC 38-2931 rILMLIH SCIENCES PYLON 1984 A Publication of the Senior Class of the West Virginia University School of Medic i no EDITORS ' PAGE Friends: Well, here it is in all its glory, the 1984 PYLON. If you don ' t like it, then we ' ll have to assume ultimate responsibility. However, if you do like it, there are several people who deserve credit. We especially want to thank our generous advertisers and patrons, without whose financial support we would have never made it past developing the first roll of film. A number of individuals merit special attention. Bob Heflin proved to be an eager and tireless worker who played a major role in several aspects of this production. If not for him, you might be reading this in 1988. Other classmates and under- classmen contributed their particular talents. Lance Matheny created the sketch of the pylons that adorns the cover and he and Jeff Neal are responsible for the faculty caricatures. Russ DeVore assisted with faculty contributions, John Leon helped with yearbook sales, and contributing photographers include Carol Johnson. Jon Murphy, Cynthia Point, and John Schaefer. In addition, many people donated candid snapshots along the way. From the start, it was our goal to make the 1984 PYLON representative of the many people and places encompassed by the WVU School of Medicine. We also wanted to add a few extras for the graduating class. We have enjoyed producing this edition of the PYLON. We hope that you share our enthu- siasm for it as you read ahead. i laUU THE 1984 PYLON STAFF Robert Heflin Manager David Paar Faculty House Officers Lori Hahn Faculty Glenn Johnson, Dan Pickle. You have successfully completed a rigorous professional program and now hold the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Having earned this degree at West Virginia University will hold you in good stead throughout your medical career. The excellent showing of last year ' s graduates alone speaks to the quality of medical education here at WVU. I recently had the pleasure of reviewing the evaluations of the 1982 WVU graduates who have completed their first year of residency training. With only one or two exceptions, all were rated from very good to excellent. This is an astounding evaluation and reflects very strong medical school preparation. It reinforces my belief that WVU is a remarkable medical school, with particular strength in teaching. I think our teaching strength is the combined result of the quality of applicant whom we accept for medical education, the small size of the class which fosters student faculty interaction and, most important, an extremely dedicated faculty whose primary concern is high quality medical education. In short, I believe that you received one of the finest medical educations in the country, and that as the years go by, you will come to appreciate this more and more. Speaking on behalf of the medical faculty, we want you to know that we are very proud of you and expect you to be a credit to this medical school and the medical profession. We hope that - like so many of our other graduates - you will give us reason to be proud that you are among our medical alumni. We also hope that you will be strong proponents of high quality medical education. As you know, there is a crisis in medical education, precipitated by concern about the escalating cost of health care education. Unfortunately, the time, effort, and structural support required for high quality education defy the principles of cost efficiency. If we are to continue to be the kind of medical center that is a source of pride to West Virginia, we are going to need community, political, and private dollar support. We hope that you will be our emissaries and strong supporters in the future. Again, on behalf of the School of Medicine, best wishes for professional and personal success. Sincerely, T Richard A. DeVaul, M.D. Dean, School of Medicine -■ West Virginia University Office of the Dean 304 347-1206 MESSAGE EROM THE DEAN On behalf of the Charleston Division, one of the component units of the West Virginia University Medical Center. I am pleased to write and extend the greetings of the faculty members and staff of the Charleston Division to the graduating class of 1984. The Division, based in a community based teaching hospital, has greatly enjoyed the presence of the medical students in recent years. A number of West Virginia University graduates have remained in residency posi- tions in Charleston and this has provided an exciting continuity as well as a positive educational and patient care experience for everyone; faculty members, the residency staff, and students. In our setting we have also had the opportunity to work with dentists, dental students, dental resi- dents, pharmacy students and doctors of pharmacy. We also participate in the development of the baccalaureate and masters level programs in nursing at the Charleston Division. Additionally, there are many nursing and allied health programs that are affiliated with the Charleston Area Medical Center. We look forward to continued close affiliation with you as you embark in your residency programs, some of you in Charleston and others in other parts of West Virginia or in other states. We wish you good fortune and hope to hear from many of you as your careers develop. Thomas W. Mou. M.D. Dean. Charleston Division WVU School of Medicine About The Pylons . . . For almost 30 years, the pylons that grace the entrance of the medical center in Morgantown have served as a most unique symbol of medical education at West Virginia University. Therefore, it is most fitting that our yearbook derives its title from these structures. The word pylon comes from a Greek root meaning gateway, and through the pylons have passed generations of students dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and the quest to help others. Created by Milton Horn, the pylons were commissioned in 1954 and completed two years later. They stand as a tribute to the development of the healing arts, celebrating accomplishments in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and dentistry through the ages. The plaster studies were donated by the sculptor to the Charleston campus in 1982 in memory of his late wife, Estelle, who played an integral role in the research and production of the statues. Mr. Horn has stated, At times one panel symbolizes events that occurred a century or more apart, yet there is unity in each panel and all of them together. He concludes that the images are meant to create for the students of West Virginia University an awareness of our wholeness with the medical community of the past, present, and future. DEDICATION David 1. Morgan, MD Since 1966, Dr. David Morgan has been the Asso- ciate Dean for Student Affairs at the Medical Center. For the medical students attending the WVU School of Medicine during those years, he has been advisor, counselor, advocate, and friend. Because of his retirement this year the 1984 PYLON is dedicated to him-, it is. in fact, his dedication to us, to the University, and to West Virginia for which we honor him here. Thank you, D.Z. WHERE WE DO . . . WVU Medical Center The West Virginia University Medical Center opened its doors in 1957, and the WVU Hospital accepted its first patients in I960. After years of sending its M.D. candidates out-of-state to com- plete their clinical training, West Virginia Univer- sity awarded its first four-year medical degrees in 1962. . . . WHAT WE DO Morgantown Now in the midst of its third decade of service to West Virginians, the WVU Medical Center is providing education and training for hundreds of students in medicine, dentistry, nursing, phar- macy, allied health professions, and ba- sic medical sciences. I ' - ' -- • ■• .: University Hospital is not only a teaching facility, but serves as a regional health care center, repre- sented by some 50 specialties, more than 400 pa- tient beds, and 2000 weekly outpatient visits. A total staff of more than 1600 utilizes its special skills, education, and training to provide the best medical care possible. 1984 finds the WVU Medical Center faced with the same grave financial problems, such as escalating costs, budget cuts, and increasing maintenance, encountered by similar institutions across the country. However, as the staff and administration deal with these difficulties, they continue to ac- cept the challenges of the present and future, and guide the Medical Center in its position as a leader in the fields of teaching, research, and service. Charleston Charleston Area Medical Center, repre- senting the largest hospital complex in the state, formed a partnership with WVU in 1972 to develop medical and oth- er health sciences programs. The training of students of medicine, dentistry, phar- macy, and nursing occurs primarily in two main hospitals — the Memorial Divi- sion located in Kanawha City, and the General Division situated in the heart of downtown Charleston. 12 The Medical Education Building was opened in 1977, and it serves as the center for clinical educa- tion programs for the students and postgraduates alike. CAMC offers residency training in several primary care specialties, and plays the role of the major health care center for central and southern West Virginia. cajs ro 13 Wheeling Division The Wheeling Division was established in 1974 in cooperation with the Ohio Valley Medical Center and Wheeling Hospital. Available at these institutions are elec- tive opportunities for senior medical stu- dents and specialty training on the post- graduate level. FACULTY John E. Pomerance 66 Dr. Pomerance came to West Virginia in 1970 as the director of the pediatric residency program at the Charleston Area Medical Center, and in 1973 he became Director of the Clinical Program in Pediatrics for the Charleston Division of the WVU School of Medicine. In addition to these duties, Dr. Pomerance has devoted much of his time to the well being of the children of West Virginia. He has served on numerous committees and was instrumental in the establishment of the Perinatal Referral System currently used in this state. Over the past 14 years several improvements have been made in the pediatric education programs and health care facilities at CAMC, and many of these changes have been due to the efforts of Dr. Pomerance. As he steps down as Chairman this July, we want Dr. Pomerance to know that his devotion to excellence will be sorely missed. We wish him luck wherever his path may lead. First, it is an organization dedicated to the belief that health care is a right, not a privilege. Through its various projects and programs the members of AMSA attempt to turn this ideal into reality. Secondly, AMSA provides avenues and information for students to pursue education and participate in the innovations occuring in health care delivery in the United States and the world. As the medical school curriculum is limited to gaining those skills and that knowledge directly necessary for patient care, AMSA supplements this by allowing students to develop an understanding of the current and chang- ing role of the physician in medicine and society in order for she or he to be prepared for that role.
