;-iS The Medical Center opened over a three-year peri- od starting in 1957 and WVU Hospital opened in August, 1960. Since that time, it has provided an educational environment where numerous disci- plines cooperate to improve health care through teaching, research, and patient care. Quality health care is enhanced in a teaching hospital which fosters intellectual challenge and inquiry. West Virginia University Hospital is not only a teach- ing hospital, it is a regional health care center and a specialty hospital with a statewide clientele. Services in some 50 specialties are provided for bed patients as well as through clinics where more than 2000 patients are seen weekly. The hospital staff of more than 1,600 use their special skills, training and educa- tion to provide the best in Medical care.

As it enters its third decade of service to West Virginians, the WVU Medical Center is providing education and training for more than 1,500 students in dentistry, medicine, nursing, phar- macy, allied health professions and the basic medical sciences. The Medical Center and its teaching hospital serve 14,500 bed patients, 155,000 emergency room and clinic patients and 5,500 Family Practice Group patients, while the WVU Health Service records 32,000 patient visits a year. The Medical Center complex-two structures under a single roof- is one of the largest buildings in the state. The four-story Basic Sciences wing adjoins University Hospital, which has 445 beds on its eight floors. The combined structure encloses 3,412 rooms.
