k. L mm . s UMtoJxrusnj i MSb p DATE DUE JAN 9. 4 1 1 MAY 3 1 2009 DEMCO. INC. 38-2931 ZM8 SZAtt 07 ASKCSPJOS The staff of Asklepios is the only true symbol of medicine. Asklepios, whose name was later changed by the Romans to Asclepius and Aes- culapius, was a Greek physician. He so em- bodied the ideal attributes of a healer that, after his death, his countrymen spoke of him as a great departed hero. As frequently hap- pened in Greek mythology, this exemplary healer later attained the status of a god. A cult began in Thessaly and temples were erected to Asklepios in many parts of Greece, near healing springs or on high mountains. The practice of sleeping in these sanctuaries was very common, for it was supposed that the god wrought cures or prescribed remedies to the sick in their dreams. His cult was intro- duced to Rome in the third century before Christ to relieve a pestilence. Asklepios is usually represented in ancient sculpture and on cairns with a staff and a ser- pent coiled around it. The staff or rod, origin- ally taken from a tree, symbolizes the mystery of plant growth. By representing the vegetable kingdom, the rod incorporates the primeval force of the earth and the imperishability of life. With his rod, the divine physician was able to cure the sick and restore the life of the earth to them. The serpent, who lives in the earth, was thought to possess the reinvigorating energy of the earth and to be able to convey this energy to the sick. It, therefore, along with the rod, stood for the life of the earth and its healing powers. The caduceus, a winged staff with intertwined serpents, is the magic wand of Hermes or Mercury, the messenger of the gods and the patron of business. During the Renais- sance, Hermes became associated with alchemy. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the fields of alchemy, chemistry, pharmacy and medicine were not well demarcated, and the fields overlapped to some extent. Now that Hermes had entered the fields of chemistry and pharmacy via alchemy, his symbol, the caduceus, came to be regarded as a medicopharmaceutical emblem. Thus the caduceus, the standard of the patron of business, does have a weak relation- ship to the field of medicine. However, it pales when compared with the staff of Asklepios as the symbol of the finest attributes of the medical profession. The Medical Center and its teaching hospital serve 14,500 bed patients, 155,000 emergency room and clinic patients and 5,500 Family Practice Group patients, while the WVU Health Service records 32,000 patient visits a year. The Medical Center complex-two structures under a single roof- is one of the largest buildings in the state. The four-story Basic Sciences wing adjoins University Hospital, which has 445 beds on its eight floors. The combined structure encloses 3,412 rooms. ;-iS The Medical Center opened over a three-year peri- od starting in 1957 and WVU Hospital opened in August, 1960. Since that time, it has provided an educational environment where numerous disci- plines cooperate to improve health care through teaching, research, and patient care. Quality health care is enhanced in a teaching hospital which fosters intellectual challenge and inquiry. West Virginia University Hospital is not only a teach- ing hospital, it is a regional health care center and a specialty hospital with a statewide clientele. Services in some 50 specialties are provided for bed patients as well as through clinics where more than 2000 patients are seen weekly. The hospital staff of more than 1,600 use their special skills, training and educa- tion to provide the best in Medical care. CHARIE§ICN pjrJj0 ■rUif!$ i IfULT ii iiiimii ir«i MINUS In 1972, WVU and Charleston Area Medical Center- the State ' s largest hospital complex- began a partnership to develop medical and other health science programs. They were based in hospitals and other facilities already in place, but in 1977 a $6 million Medical Education Building was opened. It serves as the center for the clinical education pro- grams. The Charleston Division of the WVU Medical Center expands the patient base and student capacity for WVU ' s health sciences educational programs. It serves students in dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and allied health fields, in addition to offering spe- cialty training. l|!!Bl. !!!!!! ii on 10 In 1974, the WVU School of Medicine estab- lished the Wheeling Division in cooperation with Ohio Valley General Hospital and Wheeling Hospital. The program is overseen by a joint Wheeling Area Medical Education Committee and offers elective opportunities for fourth-year students and postgraduate specialty training. At WVU Medical Center, as well as its Charleston Division and the School of Medi- cine ' s Wheeling Division, equal emphasis is given to teaching, research, and service - the pillars of sound health sciences education. In- struction is closely integrated among the health sciences, and there is a continuous search for improved ways of teaching. 11 Ml I INI THEY ' RE PAGING ME HERE? The eight unique marble reliefs adorning the Pylons at the entrance to the School of Medicine are the work of the noted sculptor Milton Horn. Mr. Horn, born in the Russian Ukraine in 1906, studied the History of Medicine extensively before beginning work on the reliefs in 1954. The white marble tablets were installed in the Pylons in 1956. The plaques depict milestones in the History of Medicine, each relief being roughly divided into upper and lower halves. Photographs and descriptions of the sculptures were done by his wife, Estelle Horn, and are reproduced here. The studies for the pylon panels, done in clay and plaster, were donated to W.V.U. by Mr. Horn to serve as a memorial to his wife, who died in 1975. They are now located at an exhibit site in the lobby of the Charleston Division of the WVU Medical Center. 61 Class Officers Morgantown: Valerie Lazzell, President Mark McGinnis, Vice President Steve Cremer, Sec Treas. In the past year, WVU AMSA has been active nationally in areas including International Health, Women in Medicine, Occupational Health and Humanistic Approaches toward Death and Dying. Locally, AMSA was involved in successful pro- jects to prevent the dumping of east coast industrial waste in W.V., and to set up a com- munity hypertension screening program. Alpha Omega Alpha Eighty years ago, six medical students at the Col- lege of Physicians and Surgeons in Chicago orga- nized an honorary medical society to recognize excellence in their peers and teachers. Thus Alpha Omega Alpha was born, with the expressed pur- pose of . . . promotion of scholarship and rea- search in medical schools, the encouragement of a high standard of character and conduct among medical students and graduates, and the recogni- tion of high attainment in medical science, prac- tice, and related fields. The West Virginia Univer- sity AOA Chapter was established in 1962. Mem- bership constitutes those students and faculty who have distinguished themselves in the pursuit of their medical education, or who have attained leadership in the medical profession. A. Cutlip V. Pres. S. Powell President C. Looney V. Pres. S. Grubb, M.D. Charleston Rep. E.B. M.D. Councillor J. Martin, M.D. Sec- Treas. IN MEMORIAM Dr. Clark K. Sleeth Dr. Sleeth was a key figure in the development and growth of the WVU School of Medicine. He joined the WVU faculty in 1941, serving as the Assistant Dean of the School of Medicine in 1958. He was Dean when the first medical degrees were awarded in 1962. As a physiologist and pathologist, Dr. Sleeth authored or coauthored three dozen research papers during his ca- reer of over forty-five years. After re- tiring as dean he organized the de- partment of Family Practice in 1973. He remained active in scholarly work after becoming a Professor Emeritus in 1978. He will be remembered as a symbol of the fine attributes of the medical profession. Dr. Bernard Zimmerman Dr. Zimmerman was the first person to be named chairman of a clinical department in preparation for the 1960 opening of University Hospital, which marked the actual beginning of WVU ' s four-year School of Medi- cine. While at WVU he was active in na- tional and international organiza- tions. In 1971 he was elected presi- dent of the Halsted Society which in- cluded some 150 of the most famous educators in surgery and allied branches of science. In 1973 Dr. Zimmerman resigned as chairman or surgery and returned to fulltime teaching, research and oper- ative surgery. His contributions to the Medical School will long be re- membered and appreciated. 136 flacks +-3oc+o ? - No cmAsvOoejoS =vftt w li4 Remove the rack? Why?
