It houses schools of dentistry, medicine, nurs- ing, pharmacy, the basic sciences, and a 440-bed teaching hospital. Allied health professionals also are educated here. In the tvi o decades since it was estab- lished, total enrollment has passed the 1,500 mark. It is the center, too, of statewide continuing education programs and a referral center for physicians and other health professionals in all sections of West Virginia. Telephone consultations on a two-hour callback basis, with complete followup, are available to physicians statewide 4! M !W ill Tin = fT j ' 3) Til ■fcl WJ Until 1960, pharmacists were the only health professionals who could obtain all their education at the state university. Medicine offered only a two-year pro- gram, and nursing and dentistry none. The transition began in 1951 when the Legislature authorized construc- tion of the WVU Medical Center and levied a penny-a- bottle tax on soft drinks to provide the basic financing. The WVU Medical Center was planned as a single struc- ture — Basic Sciences Building and University Hospital under one roof — on the Evansdale Campus north of the Downtown Campus. The Basic Sciences portion opened in 1957; first degrees were awarded in the early 1960 ' s. Dentistry now enrolls 249 students, medicine more than 350, and nursing 300 in four-year programs; and pharma- cy 205 in a five-year curriculum. Dental hygiene, medical technology, and physical therapy students number near- ly 200; basic science students 90; and post-doctoral resi- dents 180. 1 1 -— iti v 2 . ■■- West Virginia University Hospital is a 440-becl health center where education of students and advancement of knowledge go hand in hand with the best in medical care. It is the hub of the Medical Center complex, providing the training ground where students learn the science and art of caring for patients. Services in some 50 specialties are provided for bed patients as well as through clinics where more than 2000 patients are seen weekly. Emergency Room service is provided around the clock, with more than 39,000 visits recorded annually. Patients come to University Hospital and its clinics from all parts of West Virginia. They find expertise, equipment, and experience sometimes not available at other, West Virginia hospitals, in areas such as transplant surgery, bladder pacemakers, linear accelerator radiation therapy, pediatric surgery, and cleft palate repair. CHARLESTON WHEELING DIVISIONS In 1972, WVU and the Charleston Area Medical Center— the State ' s largest hospital complex— began a partnership to develop medical and other health science programs. They were based in hospitals and other facilities already in place, but in 1977 a $6 million Medical Education Building was opened. It serves as the center for the clinical education programs. The Charleston Division of the WVU Medical Center expands the patient base and student capacity for WVU ' s health sciences educational programs. It serves students in dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and allied health fields, in addition to offering specialty training. In 1974 the WVU School of Medicine estab- lished the Wheeling Division in cooperation with Ohio Valley General Hospital and Wheeling Hospital. The program is overseen by a joint Wheeling Area Medical Education Committee and offers elective opportunities for fourth-year students and postgraduate specialty training. At the WVU Medical Center, as well as its Charleston Division and the School of Medi- cine ' s Wheeling Division, equal emphasis is given to teaching, research, and service — the pillars of sound health sciences education. In- struction is closely integrated among the health sciences, and there is a continuous search for improved ways of teaching. n nm ■UllSlllii.,,,, . iiiibr • •iiiiiiiiis; 10 STUDENT LIFE rE. Castiglioni The eight unique marble reliefs adorning the Pylons at the entrance to the School of Medicine are the work of the noted sculptor Milton Horn. Mr. Horn, born in the Russian Ukraine in 1906, studies the History of Medicine extensively before beginning work on the reliefs in 1954. The white marble tablets were installed in the Pylons in 1956. The plaues depict milestones in the History of Medicine, each relief being roughly divided into upper and lower halves. Photographs and descriptions of the sculptures were done by his wife, Estelle Horn, and are reproduced here. Marymount College . ' ' . THE PERFECT MEDICAL STUDENT The most potent directing force of history has always been evolution. Whether we realize it or not, the theory of survival of the fittest is currently acting on all God ' s creatures to produce future generations better able to adapt to the environment. Undergraduate pre-meds, sometimes included in the list of God ' s creatures, are currently undergoing evolution themselves as they apply for those few medical school places. This competition will result in the natural selection of a breed of medical student much better adapted to the pressures of medical school life. Here then are 14 features of the new and improved medical student. 1. Name- A, E, I, O or U. One letter name permits very quick introductions at parties. Time saved can be used for extra studying. 2. Eating habits- None. Liver will evolve capacity to convert atmospheric nitrogen into hamburgers and oxygen into french fries. Time now spent on lunch and dinner breaks can be used for extra studying. 3. Sleeping habits - None. Biological need for rest will be eliminated by the secretion of coffee by the anterior pituitary. Wasteful coffee breaks will now be unnecessary. Time saved can be used for extra studying. 4. IHair- Kojak look. Wasteful chores such as shampooing, haircuts, beauty shop appointments, etc. will be eliminated. So will wasteful trips to the store to buy blowdryers, curlers, hairsprays and dyes. Time saved can be used for extra studying. 5. Hands-Jwo. Fingertips will evolve into four-color pens, thus eliminating trips to the drug store to get writing utensils. Time saved can be used for extra studying. 6. Feet - Two. Feet will become calified and covered with fur on the ventral side and histology notes on the dorsal side. Shoes and socks will be unnecessary as will wasteful trips to the shoe store. Time saved can be used for extra studying. 7. Clothing - Simple. All worn garments will consist of biochemistry charts or drawings from the CIBA collection tailored to body contour. Students can then study between classes just by looking at their sleeves as they walk to the lecture hall. 8. Reproduction - Convenient. Both sexes will procreate by asexual budding. Not only will lengthy heterosexual encounters be eliminated, but the entire reproductive process can be achieved while studying or while taking gross anatomy practicals. 9. Mouth-None. Since external food consumption has been phased out, the mouth will be replaced by an eye and an ear for extra reading and lecture listening power. Breathing will be done entirely through the nose, as will talking, of which there will be relatively little. Time saved not communicating can be used for extra studying. 10. Nose - Big. Enlarged nasal openings will function in efficient air intake. Olfactory function will be eliminated, and replaced by the ability to explain neuroanatomy to invertebrates. 11. Eyes - Three. X-ray vision optional for students going into radiology. 12. Ears- Three large ones, featuring selective hearing. Ears will tune out all words not found in Stedman ' s Medical Dictionary. 13. Brain size - Big. Researchers at two major university found that to absorb all taught material, the medical student should have a cranial cavity the size of Wyoming. But since this would cause serious problems on subways, the problem will be solved by evolution in another manner. Unnecessary muscles such as biceps, triceps, and sartorius will be replaced by ectopic cerebral tissue to help learn more. Loss of musculature will somewhat hinder the ability to compete in team sports, and thus open up even more time to study. 14. Brain function - Selective. With brain size limited to some extent, 95 percent of both cerebral hemispheres must be directed toward memorizing medical trivia. Consequently, the new and improved brain will not have the capacity to accomplish such everyday functions as reading a newspaper, humming Ukranian folk songs, or recalling why you watch Charlie ' s Angels. 65 RESIDENCIES WHERE WE ARE GOING TO TRAIN Veda Lynn Ackerman Pediatrics James Whitcomb Riley Children ' s Hospital Indianapolis, Indiana Thomas Robert Adamski Medicine Psychiatry WVU Hospital Morgantown, WV David James Allison Radiology WVU Hospital Morgantown, WV Douglas Glenn Althouse Pediatrics Charlotte Memorial Hospital Charlotte, NC William H. Don ' t show your superiors that you know something they don ' t know. 12. Don ' t procure or seek to procure sexual partners in house. 13. Lyrics: Polak Raspa ALPHA OMEGA ALPHA Seventy-five years ago, six medical students at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Chicago organized an honorary medical society to recognize excellence in their peers and teachers. Thus Alpha Omega Alpha was born, with the expressed purpose of . . . promotion of scholarship and research in medical schools, the encouragement of a high standard of character and conduct among medical strdents and graduates, and the recognition of high attainment in medical science, practice, and related fields . . . AOA membership of the West Virginia University School of Medicine constitutes those students and faculty who have distinguished themselves in the pursuit of their medical education, or who have attained leadership in the medical profession. 112 AOA MEMBERS - CLASS OF 1982 j.
