EDWARD JERALD VAN LIERE, MD, PHD 1896-1979 THE FATHER OF THE WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE The Class of 1980 mourns the passing of Dr. E. J. Van Liere, who served and guided the School of Medicine at West Virginia University for 58 years. His first appointment at the University was in 1921 as Professor and Head of the Physiology Department in the School of Medicine. After forming a committee in 1935 to re-secure accreditation for the 2-year school, he became Dean of the School of Medicine. He strove over the years to expand the program to a complete, 4-year medical school, and, largely through his efforts, the State Legislature created the new School of Medicine, along with the Schools of Dentistry and Nursing, in 1951. With the realization of this dream, he retired as Dean in 1960, but continued as Professor of Physiology, and was active in research and scholarly writing until the time of his death. Dr. Van Liere gave much to our Medical Center. His dedication and scholarly example will be a continuing source of inspiration to us throughout our professional careers.
