Mr. Horn, born in the Russian Ukraine in 1906, studied the History of Medicine extensively before beginning work on the reliefs in 1954. The white marble tablets were installed in the Pylons in 1956. Seven of the eight plaques depict two milestones each in the History of Medi- cine, each relief being roughly divided into upper and lower halves. Photographs and descriptions of the sculptures were done by his wife, Estelle Horn, and are reproduced on the following pages. I I Top: Hippocrates (460-370 B.C.) Father of Medicine . Hippocratic medicine ' s chief concerns were the patient and diagnosis and treatment based upon observed facts. Top: Pharmacy. The Apothecary. That I will lead my life and practice my art in uprightness and honor. That into whatsoever home I shall enter, it shall be for the good of the sick and the well to the utmost of my power, and that I will hold myself aloof from wrong and corruption and from tempting to vice. That I will exercise my art solely for the care of my patients and the prevention of disease, and will give no drugs and perform no operation for a criminal purpose and far less suggest such thing. That whatsoever I shall see or hear of the lives of men which is not fitting to be spoken, I will keep inviolably secret. While I continue to keep this oath inviolate may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the art, respected by all men in all times! But, should I trespass and violate this oath, may the reverse be my lot! Hippocrates (ca. 400 B.C.) ADMINISTRATION Charles E. Andrews, MD Provost David Z. Morgan, MD Associate Dean Gene Budig, PhD President of WVU John A. Thomas, PhD Associate Dean John A. Jones, MD Dean . % } 1 ) Thomas W. Mou, MD Dean, CAMC Robert Smith, MD Assistant Dean Eugene L. Staples, MHA Administrator - WVUH Barbara Jones, MD Chief of Staff EDWARD JERALD VAN LIERE, MD, PHD 1896-1979 THE FATHER OF THE WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE The Class of 1980 mourns the passing of Dr. E. J. Van Liere, who served and guided the School of Medicine at West Virginia University for 58 years. His first appointment at the University was in 1921 as Professor and Head of the Physiology Department in the School of Medicine. After forming a committee in 1935 to re-secure accreditation for the 2-year school, he became Dean of the School of Medicine. He strove over the years to expand the program to a complete, 4-year medical school, and, largely through his efforts, the State Legislature created the new School of Medicine, along with the Schools of Dentistry and Nursing, in 1951. With the realization of this dream, he retired as Dean in 1960, but continued as Professor of Physiology, and was active in research and scholarly writing until the time of his death. Dr. Van Liere gave much to our Medical Center. His dedication and scholarly example will be a continuing source of inspiration to us throughout our professional careers. « :::::: n m n, - MD Fairmont State College Weirton.
