I will follow that system of treatment which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patient , and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous. Into whatever house I enter I will go into it for the benefit of the sick, and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief and corruption. Whatever in connection with my professional practice or not in connection with it , 1 see or hear in the lives of men which ought not be spoken abroad , I will not divulge , as reckoning that all such should be kept secret. While I continue to keep this oath inviolate, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the art, respected by all men in all times, but should I trespass and violate this oath may the reverse be my lot. CONTENTS Dedication Adminisfration Seniors Underclassmen Faculty Candids Dedicafion Edmund B. Flink. M.D. Qcholar Researcher Teacher Physician The graduating class dedicates Pylon 1976 to you as you retire after sixteen years of service to the West Virginia University School of Medicine . As the chairman of the Department of Medicine from the inception of the school, you have devel- oped and guided a department that is respected by all for its expertise and professionalism. You created an environment of high academic standards which we needed to become knowledgeable and competent physicians; however, you have made an even greater contribution to our medical educa- tion as an example of what the patient-doctor relationship means. Each patient was treated with respect and consideration as a human being. None was made to feel rushed or unimportant. Each was made to feel at ease by yoiu: gentle competent touch, quiet sense of humor and a sincere interest in his well being. Your leadership will be missed. Your influence will remain. All ills we ' re now supposed to mend, Bui first please hear our story . You made us study willingly. Through much intimidation. You tempered our ability, With considerable frustration . You taught us some humility , By gross humiliation. Yet through Herb Lloyd ' s agility. We gained an education. We learned of hand and brain and eye , Of orifice and sinus. And if perchance we don ' t know why. Then blame it on a virus. The purpose of this four year course - ( ' Twas quite enough to choke a horse) To gain a glimpse , an overview , Of problems in the human zoo. From heart attack to Chinese worm From twisted limb to misshaped sperm . The topics great and subjects small , We took the time to learn them all. We studied Micro , studied Path We even learned a little Math. Alas I fear it is all for naught. These ancient secrets we ' ve been taught. For in the world of aches and pains. Of bruises, bumps and ankle sprains. It is not enough to be M . D . My friends , we need a law degree . Martin Zelig Kanner Ways to the top . Nick G. Anas. Congratulates the Class of 1976 The West Virginia University Foundation, Inc. was established in 1954 to secure private monies for West Virginia University. As a Land Grant Institution, West Vir- ginia University receives its basic operating budget from the State of West Virginia. However , for a State School to go beyond the ranks of mediocrity , private monies are desperately needed. We are very proud of the many University alumni and friends whose financial contributions have provided the margin of excellence between an adequate education and a broad and challenging total leaming experience . Last year over $228,000 was funneled through the Foundation ' s School of Medicine Funds for student and faculty use. This money was utilized for scholarships ($32,000); research ($59,000); specific projects and programs ($96,000); as well as $41,000 for unrestricted uses. The Foundation welcomes the Class of 1976 to the alumni ranks. In the years ahead, please remember the generous financial support your class has received from preced- ing classes. West Virginia University has invested in your future; we hope that you will invest in hers . All gifts are tax deductible and should be mailed to the West Virginia University Foundation, Inc. , P.O.
