STUART Dedication The Class of 1968 wishes to dedicate the Pylon Yearbook to the memory of Dr. Edward G. Stuart, our late assistant vice-president, teacher and friend. In Dr, Stuart we realized a unique combination of talents and qualities rarely found in one individual. As an educator, he was intensely interested in the entire education process, and he was devoted to excellence. He frequently questioned the traditionally accepted didactic methods, often experimented with newer un- proven methods and always tried to find abetter method of teaching. He was able, as few teachers are, to stimulate thought, imagination, and creativity. He taught us to accept no fact at face value without first challenging its validity. As our assistant dean. Dr. Stuart was genuinely interested in the problems, progress and welfare of each individual student. Many of us had occasion to con- front him with personal problems. Although many de- mands were made on his time, he was always willing to accomodate the students. He was kind, warm, sincere and understanding. His advice was always frank and realistic, his decisions fair and just. Very few problems remained unsolved in his hands. Perhaps the one outstanding quality that we will remember more than any other was his unfailing sense of humor which prevailed in many trying circumstances. It was this sense of humor combined with his genuine interest in every one of us that did so much to establish our morale and unity. Dr. Stuart, in addition to being an outstanding educator and a man of fine character and intellect, was indeed our friend. To his memory, then, we dedicate the 1968 Pylon. Class of 1968 W.V. U. A., West Virginia University, 1963 Ohio Valley General Hospital Wheeling, W. Va. So this is what it feels like to be a doctor. ' What do ya mean, you can ' t charcoal lasagna? 25 The Hippocratic Oa+h — I swear by Apollo Physician, by Asclepius, by Health, by Heal-all, and by all the gods and goddesses, making them witnesses that I will carry out, according to my ability and judgement, this oath and this indenture; to regard my teacher in this art as equal to my parents; to make him partner in my livelihood, and when he is in need of money to share mine with him; to consider his offspring equal to my brothers; to teach them this art, if they require to learn it, without fee or indenture; and to impart precept, oral instruction, and ail other learning, to my sons, to the sons of my teacher, and to pupils who have signed the indenture and sworn obedience to the physicians ' law, but to none other. I will use treatment to help the sick according to my ability and judgement, but I will never use it to injure or wrong them. I will not give poison to anyone though asked to do so, nor will I suggest such a plan. Similarly I will not give a pessary to a woman to cause abortion. But in purity and in holiness I will guard my life and my art. 1 will not use the knife on sufferers from stone, but I will give place to such as are craftsmen therein. Into whatsoever houses 1 enter, I will do so to help the sick, keeping my- self free from all intentional wrong-doing and harm, especially from forni- cation with woman or man, bond or free. Whatsoever in the course of practice I see or hear (or even outside my practice in social intercourse) that ought never to be published abroad, I will not divulge, but consider such things to be holy secrets. Now if I keep this oath and break it not, may I enjoy honor, in my life and art, among all men for all time; but if 1 transgress and forswear myself, may the opposite befall me. 26 9 a e m n • 1 • 1 1 o • 1 r e s Martita and Bob It a A ' l i . i HUi Tommy, Faye, Leigh Ann and Catherine Renee Mark, Pat, Jack and Michael 27 Johnsey and Alfreda Ron and Judy Willie and Wanda Charlotte, Joel, Kathryn and Joseph 28 Byron, Sally and Kathryn Vicki and Dave Kevin, Matthew, Mary, Fred, Catherine, Cathy, Theresa, Fred and Tom Bert, Amy and Pat John and Linda Carl and Margaret Lance.
