Every student who has studied OB-GYN under Nicholas W. Fugo will attest to his right to be honored with this yearbook dedication. Yet, to record those attributes which put this man a cut above the average chief is an almost impossible task. Certainly he possesses the factual knowl- edge, the technical skill, and the clinical judgement expected of a departmental head. But to these basics he adds an exceptionally intense love for, and dedication to, his patients, his specialty, and his students. Although his interest in medicine is ad- mittedly narrow ( EVERYONE should want to be an obstetrician! ), his approach to his job is many-faceted. In addition topersonally carrying a sizable patient load and administer- ing his department, Dr. Fugo spends an ex- ceptionally large proportion of his time in direct student contact. Like his fellow chiefs of services, Dr. Fugo is an idealist, but his idealism is tempered by the sober realization that those same student hands which pass, trembling, to the birth canal, and which al- most drop the squirming newborn, will some- day be delivering many of the babies of his adopted state. Acting on this realization, Dr. Fugo makes an all-out, honest, enthusi- astic attempt to personally teach all of his students the principles of good obstetrical and gynecological management. In so doing, he carves for himself a special niche in the hearts and memories of his students.
