PUBU£WfN£ GO UPANV DAUAS, T£ A£ VBDICMON Doctor Fugo received his A.B. degree from Syracuse University in 1935, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the State University of Iowa in 1937 and 1940 respectively. Follow- ing service in the United States Navy in World War II, he entered University of Chicago Medical School, and was awarded his M.D. degree in 1950. Dr. Fugo served a residency at the University of Chicago Lying-in Hospital. While an Associate Professor in the De- partment of Obstetrics and Gynecology at that hospital, he accepted the Chairmanship at West Virginia University in 1960. Every student who has studied OB-GYN under Nicholas W. Fugo will attest to his right to be honored with this yearbook dedication. Yet, to record those attributes which put this man a cut above the average chief is an almost impossible task. Certainly he possesses the factual knowl- edge, the technical skill, and the clinical judgement expected of a departmental head. But to these basics he adds an exceptionally intense love for, and dedication to, his patients, his specialty, and his students. Although his interest in medicine is ad- mittedly narrow ( EVERYONE should want to be an obstetrician! ), his approach to his job is many-faceted. In addition topersonally carrying a sizable patient load and administer- ing his department, Dr. Fugo spends an ex- ceptionally large proportion of his time in direct student contact. Like his fellow chiefs of services, Dr. Fugo is an idealist, but his idealism is tempered by the sober realization that those same student hands which pass, trembling, to the birth canal, and which al- most drop the squirming newborn, will some- day be delivering many of the babies of his adopted state. Acting on this realization, Dr. Fugo makes an all-out, honest, enthusi- astic attempt to personally teach all_ of his students the principles of good obstetrical and gynecological management. In so doing, he carves for himself a special niche in the hearts and memories of his students. This unusual opportunity to work and study in foreign countri es is offered to students through the Foreign Fellowships Program of Smith Kline French Laboratories. Administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges, the program has enabled 180 students to work and study in more than 40 countries during the past six years. Junior and senior medical students are eligible for Fellowships, which provide on the average 12 weeks ' work abroad, to be completed before internship. Interested students should apply through the deans of their schools. Smith Kline French has published an illustrated 24-page booklet telling the story of SK F ' s Foreign Fellowships Program. Tuft Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company 102 S. W. Monroe Street Peoria, Illinois 61602 Dear Bill: I thought you might be interested in knowing how I first became acquainted with The Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company and why I carry all of my life insurance with your Company. Some years ago when I had my own C.P.A. offices, I had a client who wanted an insurance policy that would provide certain definite benefits for him, his wife and his children. He engaged my services to investigate and find for him an insurance company that would write such a policy at the lowest possible cost. In the process of my investigation, I checked more than 350 insurance companies. One company even devised a special policy, specifically written to meet his requirements, and submitted this policy to the state -insurance commissioner for approval. The final result of this extensive investigation was that The Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company of Newark, New Jersey could meet my client ' s requirements at less net cost than any other insurance company. To give you an idea of the size of this policy and why such an extensive investigation was warranted, the annual premium exceeded $15,000.
