You ' ve finally made the move to WVU. Suitcases stuffed v ith everything from old high school letter jackets (with the letters removed, of course) to black light posters are sitting in the middle of your dorm room. You ' re equipped with every gadget imaginable to confront the obstacles a university might bring. But, are you REALLY ready? If someone wonts to meet you at the stadium for a beer, will you go to the Mountaineer Field with a six pack and hope he ' ll show? Do you think Grumbein ' s Island is a place where biology students go on field trips? Do you think the PRT tracks are bicycle paths? Can you get on the Med Center bus WITHOUT having to ask the bus driver where he is going? Think about it. You ' ve got a lot to learn in four years. rmy. Air Force ROTC For students in the Army ROTC, various activities such as Persian rifles (military drill team). Ranger Co., Scabbard Blade (military honorary) and the Military Ball are offered. Air Force ROTC involves students in the Aerospace Ball, Angel Flight, Arnold Air Society and a dining out in the fall. Hi w ■■■■-f . '  .i. . :■: cV ' lar ' • A What better way to inform students of current happen- ings than to bombard them with signs day after day? A favorite form of artwork, signs greet the student from every position imaginable, from flapping posts above the Lair to riveted stakes in the middle of Woodburn Circle. Some- times they are so intent and concentrated that you cannot help but become aware of them (and we ' re not joshing ). ' ? urAOT mm ' S: r-j !f SEX N. One of their out- standing feats this year was a motorcycle jump across the Mountaineer Field by band member Brad Evil Knievel Dugan. 12 13 14 15 ikes 1975 has been the year of the bike, for WVU finally provided bicycle racks at various locations around campus. Popular parking places still include the middle of sidewalks, closets, hallways and even fire wells in dorms. 16 : i ' i - V . _ 1 17 18 19 avities These little holes seem to be especially prevalent during the college years. Several theories as to why this occurs are as fol- lows: not enough money to buy tooth- paste, not bringing your toothpaste with you when you crash at someone ' s place, staying up all night to study (and eat) and not passing up the candy counter in the Lair. Of course, chances are you may just have rotten teeth anyway. 20 21 22 23 on certs Because of the University policy which prohibits percentage contracts, top name groups were hard to attract to this area. Thus, only thr ee concerts came to Morgantown this year. Sponsored by the Pop Arts Committee, Seals and Croft and New Rid- ers of the Purple Sage came first semester, while War (pictured on these pages) performed second semester. 24 25 rowds You cannot get through four years at WVU without finding yourself caught in a crowd. They come in all sizes and are most unpredictable. Popular gathering grounds include football games, basketball games, vali- dation lines and areas where the Morgantown police are either towing or engaged in a ticket writing binge. •rn 26 27 28 29 Ca-ye-tre-rt a- orm Life As a freshman, you are required to live in a dormitory. Here, you experience such pleasures as ringing fire alarms, no booze rules, hours for visits from the opposite sex, water battles, cafete- ria lines and quiet (?) hours. 30 31 32 ' 33 ' -■fclLuiiU ections As the Howard Skidmore-Jamal Ahmed administration came to a close, four groups of candidates vied for the leading positions. Running for President and Vice-Presi- dent were ' Lea Anderson and Michael Burke, Dan Hard- way and Robin Weisbarth, Jim Hurst and Charles Howard, Chuck Shreves and Linda Arnold. Anderson and Burke won, marking the first time in WVU history that a student body elected a woman for President. 34 BOYLE f l Til BOARD WE NEED TIM MANCHIN ON THE BOARO OF DIRECIQRS HARDWAY WEISBARTH flNAnnvAY  PttSID£NT V ' «-PwS,DfNT M LINDA Q LEP ARULO FOR THE BOARO ■PKSIDfNT JOE d ROSS FCR DC WatKB ' MaoT 35 ine Arts CAC drama groups as well as the Classi- cal Arts Committee and Fine Arts Commit- tee combine to offer the student opportuni- ties for cultural education and enjoyment. 36 37 38 39 reeks 40 B «Y m W ' ' - q w P| mmm 41 42 iiiiiiiiii | IliUlllli 43 Alpha Phi FRONT ROW, left to right: Patty Pillard, April Davisson, Carolyn Vieweg, Mary Jane Wilson, Ann McKendrick, Anna Berty, Susie Morton, Nancy Gelini, Lilly Latousakis, Patty Tubman, Mary Uris Fischer. Once in awhile, you nnay get bumped by a car, but for the most part, drivers usually tend to stop when you step in front of their cars without looking. Several creative students have used this island for other purposes. It can be used for hitchhiking, as a place to meet friends so others can walk around you, or as a place to fall on in the icy snow. 98 99 ' . _ - ' - angouts These are places to go to strictly if you want to pick up a date, be noticed, rest, be sociable or celebrate the end of the week. 100 :-s ?r - i 101 102 103 omecoming Highlighting the 1 975 Homecoming were a dance mara- thon, alumni dinner. People observed carrying them can be found saying, Damn, this thing is heavy! Interested people wishing to observe the weekend rituals to beer distributors would have the most success following a caravan to Pt. Mar- ion, Pa. 116 117 Labs are those blocks of time found in the Schedule of Courses in which one receives an for hours credit ' but a 4-6 for hours spent. 118 119 120 121 Pr«5«r +4 Dectures Lectures are usually long talks by professors which cause one to nod out. Occasionally, a good lecturer will come along during a semester ' s study. One can detect this by testing to see how many times a watch had to be checked for the correct time. Lectures can also apply to the speakers brought in by the Forum Festival Committee. The major difference between these lectures and the ones men- tioned above is the fact that one need not take notes at the latter (unless of course, your classroom lecturer informs you in his lecture that you are required to). Rosey Grier, football player turned actor, speaks on his insights into the sports world. Gene Roddenberry, creator of the Star Trek series, talks on science fiction to overflowing crowd in Coliseum. 122 Julian Bond, presidential hopeful from Georgia, comments on the political arena. Supercop David Toma highlights the perils and complications of solice work. TV talk show host David Frost gives a social commentary. 123 CCeisure The time not spent on sitting, talking and listening in class is called leisure. Also excluded from this concept are those times spent at meetings, looking for jobs, talking to advisors or hunting for parking spaces. Organized by the student government Mountaineer Week C ?mmittee, this event featured such events as a week long Arts and Crafts fair (where artists from all over the state displayed their wares), a General Store and a Best Dressed Mountaineer contest. The week culminated in the selection of Mr. and Mrs. Mountaineer, Denise Koppleman and Bruce Bovard. 132 133 134 H ftXIAGC ' 4 ' I - -9-- - fc ! You can easily tell the difference between an off campus liver and a dorm liver by studying their newspaper reading habits. The for- mer will almost always go for the grocery store ads, and it is not unusual to see one begin cutting out coupons in the middle of class. 138 ] 1 139 rganizations Opportunities to get involved at WVU generally fall into three cate- gories. Academic and service honor societies comprise the first group. These consist of such groups as Mortar Board (Senior Women ' s Honorary), Mountain (Men ' s Honorary), Omicron Nu Society (Home Eco- nomics) and Rho Chi (Pharmacy). Professional honor societies, such as Alpha Delta Theto (Medical Technology), Sigma Delta Chi (Journalism) and Beta Alpha Psi (Accounting) are in the second group. The final group- ing consists of national and local student groups such as Black Unity Organization, Marketing Club, Monongamoot and Students for Peace and Justice. «x Public Relations Student Society of America 140 : : I WVU Ski Club The old and the new: 1975 Student Body President Howard Skidmore and 1976 Student Body President Lea Anderson. Parking spaces are difficult to come by unless you are among the elite permit holders or can get to the Lair garage by 6:30 a.m. to wait in line. Towing fines and parking tickets are much easier to come by (espe- cially those back tickets you hove to pay when towed). There is hope though that many of these problems will be eliminated with the running of the Personal Rapid Transit system (those empty tracks you see everywhere). That is, of course only a rumor. ,iiiii !!l 158 159 arties Outlets for a good time, these functions are places where you are likely to bump into someone. For the real lazy: cut class and stay in bed. 274 275 V  j V mbrellas These nifty pieces of hardware are a must in Morgan- town weather. At the slightest hint of rain, they pop up all over, nnaking passing on the stadium bridge rather difficult. If you do not own one, simply scour any class- room on a rainy day, and you will be sure to find one kicked into a corner somewhere. Last year Consol spent over $3,500,000.00 and 420,000 man-hours were devoted to various safety training programs and safe- ty equipment development. And it ' s paying off— Accident frequency rates per million man-hours were reduced from 23.46 in 1972 to 11.34 In 1973 and, for the first 5 months of 1974, they were reduced still further to a low of 7.31.
