Their 6-5 record does not even begin to tell the whole story. Football, as in any sport, is a game of skill, dedication and a certain amount of luck. Under the circumstances, we did O.K., according to Coach Bowden. Going into the season, we were hoping to win more ball games. However, there was no way to forsee the loss of Ron Lee, Chuck Fiorante, Ade Dillon, John Har- charic, Marcus Mauney and Charlie Miller, just to name a few. Had someone told me before we ' d lose these men, I could have predicted a 6-5 record. 180 Danny Buggs: All East First Team Kodak First Team Ail-American AP Second Team All-American 181 .««x:. .«Miti ' --.- 1. 182 Seventeen starters will return next season as compared to the five who returned this year. When you only have four or five men returning, you are working with the nucleus of a team, said Bowden. It ' s strictly a building situation. If the start- ing lineup for the Maryland game had played all year, we could have won eight or nine games. W ifM .-t ' -: . ■ - . ■i , . r v y- ; t % i M -h - ' X 183 Bowden felt that next year he ' ll be better able to coach such players as Ben Williams. Ben came in under fire and to start the way he did — the burden was tough, Bowden said. Our kids are trained well. That ' s one thing about our football team, it has char- acter and it is built under fire. These boys show their character by coming back and winning three out of four ball games when they are down. 184 A lot of people would have quit, Bowden com- mented. We lost a lot of battles, but we won the war. We had a winning season. 185 •1 186 le t-l:il ' ' W-i 187 188 189 190 K?w 191 Commenting on the attitude of the WVU fans, Coach Bowden pointed out that it ' s typi- cal for people not to want to lose. Everyone feels our business is to win, Bowden said. Especially in West Virginia, where we ' re the only school playing teams like Penn State and Pitt, we ' re looked upon as a major team. Peo- ple come up with all kinds of excuses for los- ing. They claim all kinds of crazy things like the players are drunk, the coaches are drunk, the players hate the coaches or the coaches hate each other. But when you coach you expect it and have to accept it. These are prob- lems all over the country. 192 WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY 1973 FOOTBALL TEAM, FRONT ROW, left to right: Danny Buggs, Marshall Mills, Ben Williams, Emil Ros, Ade Dillon, Chuck Fiorante, Bob Weidman, Leon Carter, John Everly, Anie Owens, Tom Bowden, John Coker, Harry Blake, Steve Leach, Mike Collins, Mike Hubbard, Mike Nelson, Frank Nestcr, Jack Skidmore, Ron Lee. The hooters put together a winning tally of 10-1-3 and at one time, the team was rated ninth in the nation. Pre- season speculation for McGrath were below his team ' s accomplishments. Looking at the people I had recruited, the people coming back and the people I had lost, the best I thought we could do out of 14 games was to win eight and lose six, McGrath stated. When we ended up 10-1-3, it was very satisfying. I feel that we played the way we were expected to. This team has been the best soccer team I ' ve ever coached, McGrath stated. They ' ve been the easiest to work with and the most enjoyable. They went out onto the field with the purpose of winning in mind and not to seek individual goals. As far as team work is concerned, this has been my best team. t j ' T ' TP 194 for McGrath and Team It was discouraging to lose to So. Florida in the Southern Regionals. I think we were a little over confident for that game. After So! Florida scored, we lost a little confidence and the pressure was tremendous, McGrath stressed. McGrath found out that his team had been nationally ranked after the Frostburg game. I knew right after the game, but I let the team eat and after we got back on the bus, I announced that we were ninth in the nation. Everyone went crazy for about 10 or 15 minutes, McGrath said. It was pandemonium! The team played with a basic game in mind, McGrath concluded. It was great to work with these guys. —Mr-r y I ■m I ■ ' ■■ : ori. I knew what it took, but we didn ' t go that route, Coach Sonny Moran said sit- ting in his barren gold and blue office. The room had been cleared in preparation for its new occupant. The name of the game is recruiting and scheduling, Moran said. Look at what surrounding schools have. Recruiting is a three-ring circus and a rule or two is vio- lated. We don ' t offer the fringe benefits that are violations. Moran felt that leaving the Southern Conference really hurt the WVU team. Eleven out of thirteen years the team won the conference and then went on to the NCAA ' s. We ' d get knocked out in the first game, but the people were happy, Moran said. Now WVU was playing NCAA teams during the regu- lar season. Instead of being the team everyone looked up to in the Southern Conference, we were looking up at all the teams that were bigger than us. We were not playing from the same deck, Moran said. He also said that a prob- lem arose when West Virginia fans did not accept this. The only thing that upset me was that people didn ' t realize what we had, Moran claimed, referring to the 1972 season. It was a fleeting thing. We were nationally ranked and in a period of two weeks, it was gone. Adversity hit us when we had worked so hard. Disappointment characterized the 1973 season. We played ball clubs that had their entire teams back intact, Moran said. We lacked the total support of everybody. Better TV and radio coverage were needed. We were very competitive and only the coach and the players can appreciate that, Moran continued. To a fan, a loss is a loss. But we know when we ' ve done a good job. Only Notre Dame beat us badly. Moran emphasized that a realization had to come. If Thorne and West didn ' t jump at the job, maybe some peo- ple will realize what is lacking. I ' m not trying to burn any bridges, he said. Moran did not want to treat West Virginia as a stepping- stone. We ' re leaving a good nucleus and we ' re leaving the program in better shape, he stressed. What is needed is an indication of where the team is going. Goals and policies must be consistent. If you want to be number one, you ' ve got to put into the program what is needed. There must be complete and total support by everybody. I wish the very best for the program, Moran con- cluded. 199 200 201 202 1973-1974 MOUNTAINEERS: FRONT ROW, left to right: Graduate assistant, Bill Ryczaj, Trainer Whitey Gwynne, Chris Springer, Mark Catlett, David McCardle, Harold Black, Eartha Faust, John Vidovich, Levi Phillips, Rick Coles, Manager Bill Hines, Equipment Custodian Clarence Kimble. The teams had no other means of transportation and conse- quently. Coach Nedef f felt that the team could have won both meets if played. Injuries were a problem, too. Craig Hillegass, for example, missed the first seven meets due to a motorcycle acci- dent. He never got around to being in real good shape, so for the second half of the season he never fully recovered, Nedeff explained. Nedef f felt that the team was an over- all good one. Dale Murdock did a great deal of the coaching, he said. He ' s been a real credit to our program. Overall, the team will lose the follow- ing seniors: Frank Zatta (heavyweight), who had a pretty good year, Dave Sny- der (190 class), who helped even though he never had a strong wrestling background, and Garret Breakiron (158 class). Right now we need more strength in the heavyweight class, explained Nedeff. We have more depth in lightweight. For the 74-75 season, Nedeff predicted depth in all classes to produce a strong team. 204 1973-1974 WERSTLING TEAM; FRONT ROW, left to right; Gary Sheridan, Craig Hillegass, Ric Pennesi. J t JI Three hours a day, seven days a week, the women ' s gymnastic team diligently worked out. Coach Nanette Schnaible was pleased with her young team and believed that in a few years each event would be a strong one. Our strong areas were floor and beam, whereas bars was our weaker point, said Schnaible. The equipment hurt us a lot. At least the girls were used to competition and were used to being judged, she added. 206 Women ' s Gymnastics Has Strong Future 1973-1974 WOMEN ' S GYMNASTIC TEAM: FRONT ROW, left to right: Mary Dickson, Lee Musselman, Sandy Mendenhall, Rosemary Torre, Maria Torre, Becky Bailey, Barb Shank. The pressure was on our all-rounders for depth, said team manager Gene Diaz. They were forced to work every event. Our key was experience, Diaz continued. Our five seniors knew that the chips were down, so they worked hard. In his eyes, the team had matured from last year, with each man doing his own part. We have two people who could compete on the national level: Pete Longdon and Rick Hill, Diaz said. Others have proven they could reach that level, but they weren ' t consistent. At the beginning of the season, the team set a hypotheti- cal score that they hoped to reach. They nearly did when they beat Pitt by a score of 149.45. It was a realization for everybody, Diaz said. We started with a handicap, but by the time for Southerns, we knew we could do it. 208 Men ' s Gymnastics Overcomes Handicap 1973-1974 MEN ' S GYMNASTICS: FRONT ROW, left to right: Jeff Smay, Captain Rick Hill, Bruce Greenwood. The kids did their best and they were all up to their abil- ity. Gilson reported that the season was up to his expectations. Charlie Miesner did a particularly good job this year and we ' ll be looking forward to having him work again next year, he said. The swimming program hoped to draw in some new swimmers through the antici- pation of the new pool. I ' m sure it will be an even bigger asset to our recruiting pro- gram once the pool is finished, Gilson emphasized. 210 Swim Team Fulfills Expectations 1973-1974 SWIMMING TEAM: FRONT ROW, left to right: Geoff Young, Andy Crossan, Co-captain Pete Biffel, Coach Kevin Gilson, Co-captain Bob Pope, Mike Gurccka, Russ Winck. In their first year as a recognized varsity team, the women netters gained good experience, according to Coach Thorne. Unfortunately, we did not have much publicity, Thorne said. But, I was pleased with the team. B ' Ann True, for example, went unde- feated for nine straight matches. For the next season, Thome hoped more girls would turn out to play. 1973-1974 WOMEN ' S TENNIS: left to right: B ' Ann True, Joan Donaghue, Dawn Botsford, Sue Babb, Debbie Delcol, Ann Cornell, Jan Stewart, Gail Oberholtzer, Jane Little. 212 1973-1974 RJFLE TEAM: FRONT ROW, left to right: Tom Riddle, Kevin Richards, Jim Meredith, Lee Deneke, Katy Kelly, Leonard Paul. Rifle Team Aces Increased Schedule I was very pleased with the end results. They worked hard and earned everything they got, Sgt. Major Bobby Timms said of the members of his rifle team. In an increased schedule of 12 shoulder to shoul- der matches, the team managed to win $300 worth of trophies. One rifleman, Mark Sellaro, tied the national record with 2S 9 points out of a possible 300. We were ranked nationally, Timms elabo- rated, and we hosted the National Rifle Associa- tion sectionals. I had figured on being number one in the nation this year, but our first team was dis- qualified from the sectionals. Timms explained the honor system in rifle com- petition. There is nothing to stop the reporting of illegal scores, but my own team told me that there was a violation and I notified the referee myself. Our team members ought to be congratulated. The disqualification hurt us, but they could have stood back and I ' d have never known, he said. 213 Track FRONT ROW, left to right: Walter Lenz, Tom Kocis, Karl Kulls, Richard Connolly, Ron Bell, Arthur Divens, Brent Hawkins, Bill Parker, Tray Henshaw, Mark Dailey, Alex Kaisch. The fact that a university administration remains a constant part of the univer- sity structure often enables it to gauge these passing campus atmospheres. President Harlow described the beginning of the 1973 school year as the quietest start since he has been president. Students today, he felt, were much more concerned with educa- tional problems than they had been in the past few years. There were not very many ready-made causes on cam- pus this year, Harlow explained. West Virginia University President James G. President Harlow, for example, reported that the administration was finally get- ting to keep salaries moving up. Obtaining faculty office space and handling both traffic problems and the continu- ous pressures on parking were overriding administrative concerns. The renovation of older structures will get the most administrative attention in in the coming years. The big- gest capital improvement in the next ten years will take place on the downtown campus, Harlow explained. The inside of Martin Hall and the outside of Woodburn Hall marked the beginnings of this improvement drive.
