Text from Pages 1 - 348 of the 1970 volume:

The paradox of a university: Always the same But always changing At West Virginia University 1969-1970 was a year of more change than most years All-pervading All-invigorating Always a sense of CHANGE CHANGE CHA NGE CHA NGE CHANGE In morals and manners: Liberation from supercilious genuine morality. ' morals frees man for In political ideologies and personal theologies: Rethinking old maxims generates a new faith in old systems for some and creates a proud hope for new systems for others. In issues: From peace marches to panty raids ranged the op- portunities for grouping ; each chose the problems to face and those to avoid. In art: Playgoers still applauded the big productions at the Creative Arts Center, but even passers-by could view issue-oriented guerrilla theatre in and around the Mountainlair. Films were talked about, analyzed, ap- preciated, received as art. In the air and the land Ecological warfare isn ' t remote and distant as Viet- nam is; every day in Morgantown, the skies get a little more murky, the Monongahela gets a little more ster- ile, and nature in general gets raped a little more. In airing grievances: Upset students channeled their anger and disappoint- ment, their fears and desires for change, into ad hoc committees, fasts, celebrations, demonstrations, marches, conferences, trips to D.C. — anything that offered a chance for change. In publications: The Daily Athenaeum completed its last year as a product of journalism laboratories, the Greeks came out with the Greek Letter, and radicalism found a new outlet in The Liberator. In people In life styles In life itself? I am firm, you are obstinate, he is a bull-headed fool. I have reconsidered, you have changed your mind, he has gone back on his word. These are examples of the Irregular Conjugations with which one linguist enter- tains himself while pondering the nature of men and their opinions. Any three of us can see the same event as very good, very bad, and very indifferent. What is happening on campuses in 1969-1970 also lends itself to such conjugation : A single professor may be a high-minded intellectual, an average faculty member, and a pointy-headed snob to three different observers. Greeks are cool, straight, or reactionary; liberated students are disillusioned flower children, plain old hip- pies, or threats to the security of America. With all the rhetorical possibilities, observers and participants alike are hard put to maintain a clear understanding of just what is happening on campuses, and on this campus. The one thing happening is CHANGE. Change is the atmosphere, the air of WVU 1969-1970. Change is in the newspapers, in the streets, in the classrooms, in the thoughts and lives of the people of WVU. Change is liberalization, or it is the process of discovering new reasons for conservative positions. Change is a new way of doing things, or it is a better way of doing old things. Change is the liberation of the people and of the self, or it is the manifestation of a Communist plot. Change is finding more and more independence and finding it in a group. But CHANGE IS. Old orders are yielding way to new, and newness is still trying to find its own order. Change is the now between the old and the new, the present between the past and the future. Change is photographing campus beauties in miniskirts, when they used to pose in fully-gathered skirts and bobby socks. Change is deciding for yourself on love, sex, and marriage — whatever order they come in. Change is watching campus political parties wrangle over meaningful issues. Change is Greeks whose friends are freaks and vice versa. Change is hearing fascism defined in terms of America instead of Italy. Change is personal, national, cultural, world-wide. Change is economic, social, political. Change is as small as the dot on the i in independ- ence and as large as a war that is thought about as well as fought. Change is acting on your thoughts, living up to them. All of us are involved in the ebbs and flows of change. Our speech patterns reflect the changes of life styles. The lan- guage of the drug and pot scene is probably much more prevalent than pills and grass are. Selections on the juke box seldom rhyme moon and June or even yummy and tummy any more. Now it ' s Mother Mary whispering words of wisdom. Let it be, let it be, and Simon and Garfunkel singing for world-weary lovers, like a bridge over troubled waters, I lay me down. Hemlines, having gone about as far as they can go, threatened to sink below the knees, but didn ' t. So what ' s in a hemline? Perhaps fashions are as sig- nificant as any other indicator of the general mood of a group, and dresses here signal a freer and easier slant on life. People who have it, are flaunting it. It is style, flair, the love of life. It is also concern, activism, involvement. If you ' ve got it Only YO U can prevent war u H- o3 w o S o AND . . . We can say this happened then, and this afterwards, and perhaps years later we can look back and see why. Demonstrations gave the most evidence of change at WVU in 1969-1970. War and war-makers are seemingly perennial objects of demonstration anathema, at least to us whose lives span only the Vietnam War. But other issues also brought people into committees and into the streets. Black awareness, the environment, women ' s liberation, campus safety and security — every approach to a problem has its supporters and detractors, and it seems one could not name a campus concern that would not have someone, somewhere at WVU, working on it. -SEPTEMBER- Several things were new and changed when classes started in the fall. Sophomore and upperclass women found them- selves with privileges their male counterparts had long en- joyed, thanks to the no-hours policy initiated in dorms. But the matter of where those women lived was still determined by the in loco parentis character of the University; Like it or not, women under 21 lived in the dormitories. Also over the summer, the cheering squad, so prominent a part of the football tradition, was intearated. -NOVEMBER- -DECEMBER- The November Moratorium called some of the October par- ticipants to D.C. for the mass demonstration, but the enthu- siasm of the large October group had waned in the inter- vening month and participation dwindled. Mining disasters and an increasing awareness of the Univer- sity ' s West Virginia setting made students more sympathetic with coal miners ' complaints. Nevertheless, a DA-sponsored conference on mining health and safety, the last issue- oriented event of first semester, drew only meagre student attendance. A small group of students registered their sympathies by joining in the coal miners ' struggles for im- proved legislation, a battle partially won in 1969-1970. -OCTOBER- With the school year well underway, anti-war plan- ning began at WVU. Faculty, students, and towns- people met a month early to organize Morgantown participation in the nationwide October Moratorium. No more business as usual while the war goes on was the motivating philosophy of the Moratorium. One early headline foreshadowed an issue that would climax University demonstrations in May: Mora- torium requests denied as Harlow refuses ' U ' stand. The 24-hour observance included a Freedom School, rallies, memorial service, peace walk, public meeting at the Court house square, a Mind Garage peace con- cert, the vigil and fasting, and films. All we are say- ing is ' Give peace a chance, ' candlelight, the break- ing of bread, Woodburn striking midnight of October 15 — the conclusion of the peace demonstration was it- self as peaceful as a youthful church camp service. Polarization, mild as it was then, followed the articles and explanations of Vietnam positions of two faculty members. Dr. Wesley Bagby, professor of history, enunciated his liberal understanding of U.S. involve- ment in Vietnam and his opposition to that continuing involvement. James Whisker, assistant professor of political science, clearly delineated his conservative stance on America ' s Southeast Asian endeavors. Stu- dents who knew what they thought but didn ' t know why were likely to find out from one or the other of the two men. Another issue, one not ever clearly re- solved, surfaced during the October Moratorium. Either the University does or does not engage in chemical and biological warfare research. With journ- alists and public relations men arguing about contracts only a corporation lawyer could fully understand, most of the University public was left wondering. many changing times JANUARY The Student Activist League accom- plished at least one goal in January, that of arousing student interest in student causes. That interest ran pro and con, sometimes heatedly. The precipitant was SAL ' s list of 13 demands upon the ad- ministration. Items 1 and 2 called for student investigation of Mountainlair and Bookstore operations. Library hours. Black studies, and student housing com- prised the next three. SAL demanded a student committee to review curricula and faculty, a pass-fail core curriculum, a University-hired lawyer for free legal aid to students, a University commitment to Board of Regents reorganization, an immediate end to academic credit for ROTC. an open admissions policy, the right of WVU employees to unioniza- tion, and an end to restrictions on grad- uate school admissions. -FEBRUARY- February put two more issues into the headlines. The day after the Citizen ' s League for En- vironmental Action Now (CLEAN) organized to take on pollution, a journalism faculty proposal to sever the DA from the J School sparked Save the DA fever in many media- minded students. -MARCH- Campus elections breathed life into windy March, with allega- tions ranging from Communist influence to smear tactics. Party platforms reflected the issue- oriented nature of the campus mood with the Mountaineer freedom Party (in its second year) including SAL ' s 13 de- mands in its program. Student Party and All-Campus Party once again divided the top offices. -APRIL- Earth Day, too. was observed here April 22, with a conference and various pro- grams for educating the student and the public about the insidious destruction of earth, air, and water. In fact April was the month of most numerous issues on campus — women ' s lib- eration took over an issue of the DA in April. Morgantown City Council at- tempted to prevent the appearance of Chicago Seven lawyer William Kunstler at WVU in April, campus Blacks planned an April week of programs to foster Black awareness, and the discovery of the bodies of two tragically murdered Uni- versity freshmen in April triggered the organization of students to demand safety improvements on campus and in Morgantown. Once again the students held a public rally, and the safety — and security-minded group marched to City Hall with their proposals. -MAY- Finally came May. No one familiar with the annual campus schedule of events would expect a university to erupt over a national issue during finals week. But at WVU and many other schools, it happened. With the Vietnam War officially expanding into Cambodia, no matter how temporarily, and with the deaths of four Kent State students in an anti-war demonstration there, West Virginia University students — some of them — literally took to the streets. At times the issues seemed drowned in alternating floods of emotion and numerical curiosity. A peak estimate of demonstrators was 500, while some 2000 watched silently or with heckling. A couple hundred demonstrators faced 38 riot-helmeted state police in the streets at Grumbein ' s Island. One man, President Harlow, was the object of much of the disturbance, for the streets had been taken as an ultimatum for a public statement from him on Cambodian involvement. Those on the outside called it The Riot, those on the inside called it The Revolution, while both knew it was really neither. The leftists and liberals were defending a street not all of them had wanted to seize, but if that was where the line was drawn, then that was the place to take a stand. Most of the spectators simply spectated, but a sizeable fac- tion urged on the police, yelling for them to crack the heads of demonstrators. They could have been in the stands at a football game. The demonstrators chanted Peace Now and anti-facist slogans and We want Harlow. The administration maintained a taut silence. Then there was tear gas. The breeze divided it between the leftists in the streets and the rightists on the ' Lair steps. But still the streets were occupied. The eventual settlement is a credit to the cool of the cops, who promised to leave — and did, and the persuasive power of some prominent demonstrators, who promised to clear the streets — and did. A Victory Celebration the next day ended the three-day event on two notes: 1) relaxation from the double tension of confrontation and finals and 2) an undercurrent of promised activism in the months to follow. And in spite of the issue-crammed nature of 1969-1970, much grist was left for activist mills — still and always the war, until its end and the end of all such wars; housing discrimination against stu- dents and especially against Blacks; poverty, rural and urban; pollution, women ' s lib, and other problems yet to be faced. TROUBLED WATERS Because the most stridently vocal students are on the left, one may overlook the right as well as the center of that silent majority for whom President Nixon claims to speak. And no one can deny that WVU has its conservative traditionalists and its silent middle. Is this change a universal at WVU in 1969-1970? Perhaps the story of change on these pages relies too much on the turbulence at the edge of the stream. Nevertheless, ripples — even if not indicative of the water ' s depth — do indicate the direction and strength of its currents. Ripples appear where the current drives water against a n obstruction, and so they reveal both the obstruc- tion and the current. Change is like water in yet another way, for a stream is both ever- moving and ever the same stream. So, too, is WVU now a university of change and still the same West Virginia University. The Mountaineers had the honor of playing the first game of college football ' s second cen- tury. It was also the first game played on the new Astro-Turf at Mountaineer Field. A near capacity crowd was on hand to see WVU stun Cincinnati 57-11. The offense made 27 first downs while running up a total of 523 yards. The WVU de- fense, led by Carl Crennel and George Henshaw. stopped Cincinnati with five first downs, 16 yards rushing, and 107 yards offense. Jim Braxton ran for 1 1 3 yards, made three touchdowns, and kicked four extra points. The following week, before 31,000 rain-soaked fans, the Mountaineers easily handled the Maryland Ter- rapins. 31-7. With most of the action packed into the first half, Braxton once again stood out, rushing 161 yards and scoring 19 points. The defense, led by Hen- shaw and Crennel. limited the Maryland offense to 106 yards. WVU had a tougher time the following Saturday night in New Orleans. It took a second half comeback to defeat Tulane 35-17. Oscar Patrick, WVU ' s leading pass receiver, was lost for the season with a leg injury in the first half. The second half was a well-balanced combination of rushing and passing. Bob Gresham led the ground game with 169 yards. WVU coasted to an easy 32-0 victory over VMI for its fourth win of the season. Leading 29-0 at the half, the first team retired for the remainder of the game. Mike Sherwood in his fourteenth game surpassed the WVU career record for toal offense. ,.. .. v hi 10-1 Record wvu 57 Cincinnati 11 31 Maryland 7 35 Tulane 17 32 VMI Penn State 20 49 Pitt 18 7 Kentucky 6 31 William Mary 33 Richmond 21 13 Syracuse Peach Bowl 10 14 South Carolina 3 BHWHHBS For the second year in a row, it would be a battle of two un- defeated teams as WVU journeyed to State College to meet Penn State. The game had been a sellout for months. Many WVU stu- dents stood in line all night at Beaver Stadium to buy the few stand- ing room tickets that would be on sale the next day. Penn State, undefeated in twenty-two straight games, pushed through WVU 20- 0. Going into the game, WVU was first in the nation in rushing offense and second in total defense. Starting on the WVU six yard line, the Mountaineers marched to the Penn State 25 yard line be- fore a bobbled pitchout stopped the drive and changed the course of the whole game. The Mountaineers never regained their momentum. Late in the first half, Penn State scored the only touchdown needed to win. 250 Havin g a free weekend, the Mountain- ers prepared for the Homecoming battle with Pitt. Mountaineer Field, with a rec- ord crowd of 35,500, had fans sitting on the AstroTurf. For the first time, WVU won its third game in a row over Pitt by a score of 49-18 — the largest margin of victory ever over the Panthers. John Hale blocked two punts in a row deep in Pitt territory to set up a pair of quick WVU touchdowns. Ed Williams ran for 199 yards and three touchdowns. ;r22e   •■• • ' l« ' !ij«w« '  m u • -amSSaW- ■j, -iijpjjjfcp WV- ■ It was snowing again as WVU upset Syracuse 13-10. The Mountaineers couldn ' t get their offense rolling in the first half and trailed 10-0 late in the third quarter. Suddenly both offense and defense came alive. It took only one minute and forty-eight seconds for the Moun- taineers to put two touchdowns on the scoreboard while the defense stopped the Orangemen cold. With their most successful regular season in 47 years, the Mountaineers received a well-deserved invitation to the Peach Bowl. In control all the way, the Moun- taineers defeated South Carolina 14-3. With WVU leading 7-3 late in the fourth quarter, South Carolina made one of their strongest drives of the game but were stopped short by West Virginia ' s outstanding de- fense. The WVU offense took over and scored the final touchdown only seconds before the end of the game. WVU threatened to score many times as they outrushed the Gamecocks 356 to 64 yards. By gaining 208 yards, a new WVU single game record, Ed Wil- liams was voted the game ' s most outstanding player. All-America Carl Crennel was voted the most out- standing defensive player. Playing before their third sellout contest in a row, the Mountaineers edged Kentucky 7-6, to spoil the Wildcats ' homecoming. WVU had to rely almost solely on its defense as the constant rain hindered the offense. Mike Slater intercepted four passes to tie a school record and save the game for the Mountaineers. It was raining again as Bob Gresham scored three touchdowns to lead WVU to a 31-0 victory over William Mary. The final home game of the season was played in 19 degree temper- ature. It had snowed for two straight days before the game and volunteers worked all night to keep the AstroTurf cleared. Snow was still falling as WVU beat Richmond 33-21. Gresham and Brax- ton shared the spotlight as they scored two touchdowns each. 253 5- - k ' rr ' — 87 70 71 ,73 75 6 y UM2 14 - 20 ai- 22 23 34-25 26-27 28 N3 -v 3l O3 3 MOUNTAINEER FOOTBALL— FIRST ROW: Bob Pastin, Dick Ward, Bernie Galiffa, Mike Sherwood, Thad Kucherawy, Leon Jenkins, Ron Pobolish, Jack Hammond, Mike Slater, Terry Snively. Robinson tallied 520 points in 26 games for a 20.0 average. His average makes him the second West Virginia sophomore in history to aver- age more than 20 per contest. The first was Hot Rod Hundley. Hummell finished second in Mountaineer point production with a 14.0 average. His career point total of 1,137 places him seventh in that category. 263 Other 1970 Mountaineer leaders were junior forward Dick Symons with a 52.4 field goal percentage and senior forward Larry Woods with 236 rebounds. One significant team mark showed the unusually small West Virginia cagers out — rebounding taller opponents by a 1252 to 1184 margin. Browns efforts during his 20 years of outstanding service to West Virginia University are reflected in numerous improvements which have created prominence and prestige for WVU Athletics. Red initiated his association with West Virginia University athletics in 1950, coaching the basketball team. After four prosperous seasons he was appointed to the Director of Ath- letics position which he still holds. Leading the 13-sport Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Brown maintains his policy of representative scheduling which features pairings from neighborhood rivalries to coast-to-coast battles. Under his direction, expansion of athletic facilities has complimented this plan. Already considered one of the best basketball facilities in the nation, the WVU Coliseum has emerged as yet another multi- purpose structure. The impressive 14,000 seat arena will house the School of Physical Education with offices for faculty and coaches. A new baseball diamond along with soccer and foot- ball practice fields and tennis courts surround the Coliseum to form the University ' s athletic complex. A new track and field complex, complete with a regulation Olympic size one-quarter mile, all-weather track, will serve WVU ' s track team and is located next to the Coliseum. AstoTurf at Mountaineer Field exemplifies the Brown Philos- ophy. The artificial surface assures favorable field conditions at all times for both the football and soccer squads. Even general recreation has broadened its program and benefited from the durable carpet . Another addition to the sports scene at WVU, conceived and realized during Red ' s 16 years as athletic director, is the triple-tiered, blue and gold press box, rated as one of the finest in the East. While improvements have been completed on the football dressing and training room areas, plans are still being formu- lated for additonal seating at the stadium. Robert N. Red Brown has lived all of these dramatic and purposeful developments. They illustrate his policy of progress — and 20 years of action. Placing your advertising in our yearbook emphasizes your interest in West Virginia college people. To recall memories of those college years, what better way than to leaf through a yearbook? Here your ad will be permanently preserved, to be noticed in years to come. The Monticola is an instrument of communication between the often isolated life within a university and the active every day life in the outside world. With continual communication between you and the uni- versity, the terms town and gown will no longer create an antithesis. With greater enrollment each year at West Virginia University, the Monticola can be expected to parallel this growth. This is only pos- sible when our advertisers maintain their support of our publication. Therefore, WE SINCERELY THANK YOU. 310 Parent Patrons Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Adams Susan Aldish Mr. and Mrs. Robert Alger Mary E. Allen Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Allinder Mr. and Mrs. Russell V.
