BILL MCTORSON Student Body President IDA COOPER Student Body Vice-President SHARON FISK Executive Council Secretary Student Government The University ' s student government acts as the most powerful voice some 6,000 students have in the functioning of the University. Started in 1921, and reorganized under a new constitu- tion in 1952, student government provides for three sepa- rate departments of governmental activity: the student executi e council, the student legislature, and the student court. The purpose of student government is to sponsor and organize activities and projects, help co-ordinate the work of other campus groups, represent the student body to the faculty, administration and off-campus groups, and to pro- vide students with experience in organization, human rela- tions and democratic self-government. Through newsletters, open meetings, and suggestion ses- sions, student government establishes a clo.ser liaison with the students. Increasing in efficiency, activity, and respon- siveness to student needs, student government is growing in its role as the representative of the entire student body. FRESHMAN ELECTIONS, sponsored by Student Government, are watched quite closely by the upperclassmen . . . their motives being several. ' Beat Pitt 3,000 times.
