' i y The obligations of this 1943 monticola to students and parents alike HAVE been increased MANIFOLD BY A WAR WHICH HAS CALLED WEST VIRGINIA ' S SONS FROM THEIR COLLEGE LIFE AND PLACED THEM ON BATTLE LINES ALL OVER THE WORLD. MANY OF THESE, OUR FRIENDS, SHALL NOT RETURN FROM OVER THERE, BUT THEIR SPIRIT SHALL BE EVER PRESENT BETWEEN THE COVERS OF THEIR COLLEGE ANNUAL— THEIR MONTICOLA. TO THE PARENTS WE EXTEND THE SINCERE HOPE THAT THIS MONTICOLA WILL AF- FORD A GLIMPSE OF THE JOY AND HAPPINESS YOU HAVE MADE POSSIBLE BY GRANT- ING US THESE YEARS AT W. V. U. AND IN THE EVENT THAT JOHNNY OR BOB OR BILL DOES NOT RETURN, MAY IT PROVE TO BE OF SOME VALUE IN ITS OWN INADE- QUATE WAY. TO THE STUDENTS WE EXTEND A HOPE THAT THIS MONTICOLA WILL BE TREAS- URED NOT JUST AS A BOOK OF PICTURES AND PRINTING, BUT RATHER AS REPRE- SENTING ONE YEAR OF OUR LIFE. AND IF, AS THE YEARS PASS BY, THIS MONTICOLA COMES TO BE A SOURCE OF PLEASANT MEMORIES OF LIFE AND LOVE AT W. V. U. DURING A TIME OF UNCERTAINTY, THEN OUR EFFORTS SHALL NOT HAVE BEEN IN VAIN.
