LOCATED IN MORGANT N, WEST VIRGINIA Front view of the Administration Building, formerly the University Library, in the center of the picturesque West Virginia campus. 164B03 ' i y The obligations of this 1943 monticola to students and parents alike HAVE been increased MANIFOLD BY A WAR WHICH HAS CALLED WEST VIRGINIA ' S SONS FROM THEIR COLLEGE LIFE AND PLACED THEM ON BATTLE LINES ALL OVER THE WORLD. MANY OF THESE, OUR FRIENDS, SHALL NOT RETURN FROM OVER THERE, BUT THEIR SPIRIT SHALL BE EVER PRESENT BETWEEN THE COVERS OF THEIR COLLEGE ANNUAL— THEIR MONTICOLA. TO THE PARENTS WE EXTEND THE SINCERE HOPE THAT THIS MONTICOLA WILL AF- FORD A GLIMPSE OF THE JOY AND HAPPINESS YOU HAVE MADE POSSIBLE BY GRANT- ING US THESE YEARS AT W. V. U. AND IN THE EVENT THAT JOHNNY OR BOB OR BILL DOES NOT RETURN, MAY IT PROVE TO BE OF SOME VALUE IN ITS OWN INADE- QUATE WAY. TO THE STUDENTS WE EXTEND A HOPE THAT THIS MONTICOLA WILL BE TREAS- URED NOT JUST AS A BOOK OF PICTURES AND PRINTING, BUT RATHER AS REPRE- SENTING ONE YEAR OF OUR LIFE. AND IF, AS THE YEARS PASS BY, THIS MONTICOLA COMES TO BE A SOURCE OF PLEASANT MEMORIES OF LIFE AND LOVE AT W. V. U. DURING A TIME OF UNCERTAINTY, THEN OUR EFFORTS SHALL NOT HAVE BEEN IN VAIN. a .ftfe;,i-a-- 1 ' - u rX EMPIRE BUILDER Raymond Ernest Salvati is a graduate of whom West Virginia University and the Class ot 1943 are justly proud. He is now Vice-President and General Manager of the Island Creeli Coal Company, one of the largest and most successful corporations of its kind in the United States. He is also Vice-President and General Manager of the Pond Creek Pocahontas Com- pany and Consulting Engineer for the Princess Elkhorn Coal Company. Mr. Salvati was born on May 14, 1899, at Monongah, West Virginia the son of C. and Elizabeth (Armentrout) Salvati. He was educated in the Monongah public schools, at Fair- mont High School and at West Virginia University. During the first World War, he with- drew from his studies and was attached to the field artillery division of the United States Army. When the war ended he returned to college and was graduated in 1922, with the de- gree of Bachelor of Scienc e In Mining Engineering. He was an outstanding undergraduate, both an athlete and a student. He was a member of the wrestling squad; and his scholarly attainments won for him membership in the honorary engineering societies, Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Gamma Epsilon. He began his professional career in the humble role of track-layer at the Number Sixteen Mine in the Mud Fork division of the Island Creek Coal Company, and he has remained with the same company up to the present, advancing in some twenty years to one of the most important executive positions In the corporation. On May 12, 1921, he was married to Miss Pearl Charlotte Williamson; and to that union have been born three children: Raymond Ernest, Junior; Timothy Andrew, and Marlanna. Mr. Salvatl ' s career should inspire all students. His fine personality has gained for him many friends throughout West Virginia and the country at large; and his brillian t professional talents have won him distinction in various fields of endeavor. He is a member of the Ameri- can Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, American Legion and the American Mining Congress. He Is a past-president of the West Virginia Coal Mining Institute and the Alumni Association of West Virginia University. At the present, the important services that he renders in t ' r ' ee large coal companies constitute a distinguished contribution to the na- tional war effort. It is with great pleasure that we dedicate this volume to Raymond Ernest Salvati. Elizabeth Moore Hall, in the hearf of the campus, is one of West Virginia ' s most beautiful buildings. Housing a swimming pool, it is used primarily as the center for women ' s physical education. I hope that throughout the years it will bring to your minds remembrances and recollections of your classmates and colleagues, and will recall many happy memories of your University days. This volume naturally centers our thoughts on the war. Many of the students portrayed have already joined the armed services and are now stationed In many battle zones and Army camps serving their country gloriously. Also depicted in this volume is the part the University is taking in various training programs for soldiers who are being assigned to the campus which again emphasizes the fact that the University has dedicated all of its facilities, buildings and equipment to the war effort. The editors are to be commended for the splendid way in which they have commemorated the class of 1943. This Monticola is unusually attractive, and I am sure it will be highly treasured by all of you. As I bid a fond farewell to the members of the graduating class, I extend to each of you my very best wishes for your success and happiness. Sincerely yours, C. E. ORTON Established in 1867 at the University ' s Incep- tion, West Virginia offers a four-year course of instruction In military science and tactics. All male students not specifically exempt are re- quired to complete two years of basic military training for graduation. Students who so elect may continue the advanced military course in their third and fourth years, providing their rec- ord in basic military justifies. The year 1943 proved an important one in the University military department. With our na- tion engaged in World War II, military science naturally assumed more than ordinary signifi- cance, and it should be added in passing that our military department more than distinguished itself in the crisis. On March 19, 1943, a grand total of 196 ad- vanced military students were approved and In- ducted in the regular U. S. Army at Fort hiayes, Columbus, Ohio. All of these men were then returned to the campus to complete the second semester, at the end of which they went back to the Fort hiayes reception center for regular Army assignments. West Virginia University has every right to be proud of these men — fighting sons of Uncle Sam — and the military department responsible for their training. JAMES S DAWSON JOHN R TYSON GEORGE G. The prospects 3,500 and a regular United Press leased wire serv- were glowing. By February, however, the editor was saying, Some students are too poor to take the Atheneaum and pay for it. Oh, yes, too poor — but they can eat oysters every night and roll delicious five-centers between their honeyed lips all day long. The Daily Atheneaum is one of the four most important laboratories of the School of Journalism, now in its fourth year as a school. It was first made a department in 1927. This year The Atheneaum made its contribu- tion to keeping up morale by distributing copies In spite of early ups and downs, the little period- of the paper, free of charge, to the soldiers sta- ical flourished. (BILL) KERN whose three-year tenure as head grid master of the Mountaineers came to an end on May 6, 1943, when he accepted a commission in the USNR. iUlillR IBUi Despite four losses — two early and two late In the season — West Virginia ' s football Moun- taineers in 1942 marked up the best record com- piled by an Old Gold and Blue eleven since the Sun Bowl championship year of 1937. The final tabulation showed five victories as against four defeats for a difficult nine-game schedule. It should be added that the Mountaineers ' record might have been even better had the squad not been riddled by injuries and manpower losses to the armed services. Never once after the opener with Washington and Lee was Coach Bill Kern able to field his full strength. After mopping up on the Generals in Charles- ton, 21-7, the Mountaineers ran into all kinds of trouble in Boston and were overwhelmed by the famed Flying Eagles, 33-0. The following week they rebounded to defeat South Carolina, 13-0, in their home opener, however. Fordham was the next foe at New York ' s Polo Grounds and again the Mountaineers fell, 23-14, but only after giving the Rams a great run for their money. Then followed an easy 27-0 win over Waynesburg. The two high spots came midway In the cam- paign. Playing before a homecoming crowd of 15,000, the Mountaineers swamped a powerful Penn State team, 24-0, in one of the greatest exhibitions In West Virginia history. This was Penn State ' s only defeat of the year and the ensuing week-end the NIttany Lions rebounded to beat a crack University of Pennsylvania ma- chine. After battling on even terms for 59 minutes at Lexington, Fresh- man Dick Leonard connected on a long pass to Sophomore Fred Morecraft for a touchdown that gave West Virginia a memorable 7-0 triumph. The tables were reversed when Michigan State was met at East Lansing, the Spartans romping off with a 7-0 decision. The season ended for the travel-weary Kernmen in Miami ' s Orange Bowl, where an exciting duel resulted in a 21-13 win for Miami.
