' native of Pennsylvania, buf a West Virginian by adoption, Herbert C. Greer has played a large and distinguished part in the life of the state, since he first came here in 1906. Born unto a family prominently identified with the Steel Industry in Western Pennsylvania, Mr. Greer prepared him- self to carry on the family tradition. Following his graduation from Kiskimmetas Springs School in 1895, he entered Massachusetts institute of Technology and received its degree of Bachelor of Science in 1899, at the age of twenty- one. He immediately entered the Steel Industry and was successively with the Sharon Steel Company, The Tennessee Coal, Iron and Steel Company, the LaBelle Iron Works and in 1912, became president of the Reeves Steel and Manu- facturing Company at Dover, Ohio. Soon after the turn of the century, Mr. Greer became interested in the mineral resources of northern West Virginia and established the Preston County Coke Company, in the Deckers Creek Valley, near Masontown. Steadily expand- ing these interests, in 1911, he established the Preston County Light and Power Company and in 1914, the Greer Limestone Company. In 1917, he founded the Greer Steel Company and built a large plant at Dover, Ohio, and In 1936, built another plant at Anderson, Indiana. These two steel plants are now contributing to the new war effort of the United States. In November, 1923, Mr. Greer became a newspaper publisher, with the purchase of the Morgantown Post, his publishing of the Dominion-News at Morgantown and of weekly newspapers at Mannington, Martinsburg, Grafton, and New Martinsville, West Virginia. In 1940, Mr. Greer established the first Radio Station in Morgantown, being Station W. A. J. R., which not only serves Morgantown, but a large section of northern West Virginia. Although never a candidate for public office, Mr. Greer has been prominently identified with the Republican party for many years. He served as chairman of the West Virginia State Republican Advisory Committee; has been a dele- gate to many Republican conventions and was their candidate for elector-at-large in 1932 and 1936. He has declined several offers of appointment to public office, including appointment to the chairmanship of the U. S. Civil Service Commission, tendered to him by President Hoover. The only appointment accepted by Mr. Greer was as a member of the West Virginia University Board of Gover- nors in 1940, a position which he accepted because of his long and active interest in the University. He is a member of the Methodist Church and the Masonic Order. His social clubs are the Duquesne and Longue Vue at Pittsburgh; the Everglades, Bath and Tennis, Palm Beach Country, and Sailfish Club of Florida, at Palm Beach, Florida, and the Gibson Island Yacht Club at Gibson Island, Maryland. He Is an honorary member of The Mountain, Scabbard and Blade, and Sigma Gamma Epsilon. As a developer of the natural resources of West Virginia, a manufacturer, a publisher, a public-minded citizen, and a proven friend of the University, Mr. Greer has won a responsible and respected position in this state, which The Mon- ticola is happy to recognize by dedicating this issue to him. pioIAeeHr •MmaInuIfa cIIt urIerI juiAder
