tickled the funnybones of most of the students and townspeople who attended it. The old story of a female impersonator who plays his part so well that he attracts a prospective husband has been used since the Middle Ages, but Charley ' s Aunt never fails to make it funny. Designed to present a more serious and tragic side of the drama, Maxwell Anderson ' s Winter- set was given its university premiere April 28 on the stage of Reynolds hiall. A cast of twenty- one students ably enacted the story of a boy who sought vengeance and justice. On May 9 the University Players gave three one-act plays for the benefit of Greater West Virginia Week visitors. The three comedies were No! Not the Russians! , The Castle of Mr. Simpson, and Overtones. [27]

First big dance of he year was the Fail Cadet Hop, held in the Armory and featuring Larry Phillips. On the next weekend Mountain spon- sored the annual hHomecoming Dance, following our victorious assault on the Wildcats of Ken- tucky. Fraternity and sorority informals followed in rapid succession. Came the 30th of November and the annual Band Ball; then on December 6 the long awaited Men ' s Pan. Jack Teagarden and the change from the rough floor of the field house to the Armory gladdened the hearts of hundreds of fraternity men and their dates. December 18 brought the first Women ' s hiall Formal; on January 17 the women again paid, this time for the Women ' s Pan, and the piper was Reggie Childs. Coming between semesters, an exclusive spot, the Military Ball has long been the top dance of the year and 1941 brought no exception. Vincent Lopez on February 7 packed the Armory with his name band, one of the best of the year. The long suffering women again paid, and plenty, for February 14 was the occasion for the A. W. S. Gold Digger ' s Ball, where men became coy creatures, Incapable even of holding their own coats. The Men ' s hHall dance, second Cadet Hop on March 14, fraternity and sorority formals, and the Scabbard and Blade Formal brought the so- cial season up to April 18. On April 25 the Women ' s Hall Spring Formal concluded the so- cial calendar except for some scattered frater- nity formals and the Senior Ball during gradua- tion week. [29]
