tickled the funnybones of most of the students and townspeople who attended it. The old story of a female impersonator who plays his part so well that he attracts a prospective husband has been used since the Middle Ages, but Charley ' s Aunt never fails to make it funny. Designed to present a more serious and tragic side of the drama, Maxwell Anderson ' s Winter- set was given its university premiere April 28 on the stage of Reynolds hiall. A cast of twenty- one students ably enacted the story of a boy who sought vengeance and justice. On May 9 the University Players gave three one-act plays for the benefit of Greater West Virginia Week visitors. The three comedies were No! Not the Russians! , The Castle of Mr. Simpson, and Overtones. [27]

V The dramatic season opened with the Uni- versity Players ' presentation on November 12 of Cock Robin, a mystery by Philip Barry and Elmer Rice. Actually a play within a play, the scene of this drama was laid on the stage of a theatre during rehearsal; to the audience the effect was that of viewing the play from back- stage. The most serious fare presented to university audiences was the Kingdom of God, a religious play by Martinez Sierra. In the course of its three acts, the Kingdom of God traces the eventful life of Sister Gracia from nurse in an asylum to Mother Superior of an orphanage. This beautiful play was superbly enacted by the largest cast of the year, thirty-five members. In March the ancient farce, Charley ' s Aunt, still popular after thousands of performances. [26]
