Mrs. Burkett is a graduate of West Virginia State College, holding a B.A. degree with ma- jors in Music and Art. She received further training in business and industry while work- ing for the State of New York and the Federal Government in various positions. She returned to West Virginia State College to serve as Secretary to the Registrar, and in 1966 she was appointed Director of Financial Aid Ad- ministrators, and the Midwestern and Na- tional Associations of Student Financial Aid. She also works with The Minorities Open Forum and was recently appointed to the Low Income Disadvantaged Student Policy and Program Committee of the Midwestern Association of Financial Aid Personnel. She uses her academic background and career experiences to render effectivservice to her community. Her genuine love and concern for the elderly persons are demonstrated in the kind deeds that she performs for them and the pleasure she derives from this special involve- ment with others. She is a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church and its Women’s Chorus. And she is also a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. For relaxation, music heads her list. She col- lects all types of records, preferring classical, semi-classical and jazz music. Travel is also one of her special interests. A loyal and spirited alumna, she looks forward to Alumni reunions and Homecoming events. She has a love affair with people and enjoys her work im- mensely, but chooses to remain in the background of most activities rather than oc- cupy the limelight. ae] Soin ata a Te CT ES SO RET — site aa i sa a oe ‘ she ee erg tudent when needed. This book therefore is dedicated in his honor. Succeeding Dr. William J. L. Wallace, Dr. McNeill came to the institute campus from the West Virginia Center for Ap- palachian Studies and Development in Morgantown on July 1, 1973. There he served as the director of the Division of Com- munity and Environmental Development. Previously, Dr. McNeill served as an associate professor and chairman of the sociology department at Bennett College in Greensboro, NC. He also worked for 17 years with the North Carolina State University Co-operative Extension Service, serving as district supervisor during his last 12 years there. ; Born September 30, 1924, in Smithfield, NC, Dr. McNe ill attended Clayton (NC) High School and was voted the school’s outstanding athlete. He graduated in 1941, and served in the United States Army before enrolling at North Carolina A T State University in 1945. He earned his B.S. degree in Agricultural Education in 1949 from A T, and received his M.A. in Extension Supervision in 1960 from the University of Wisconsin, Dr. McNeill also studied at North Carolina State Universi- ty, A T, State and the University of Wisconsin once again, receiving his doctorate in Extension Administration from the latter in 1967. During his eight years here, Dr. McNeill has seen WVSC grow and improve year by year. Enrollment as well as the number of degrees and programs offered have increased. The most significant of achievements to Dr. McNeill’s credit is the currently underway 10 year master plan of construc- tion and remodeling of college facilities. These changes, at a cost of $25 million, will greatly enhance the flexibility of WVSC so as to meet the needs of as many students as possible. Dr. McNeill is married to the former Lucy Mooney with whom he has a son, Harold Jr. (4). He also has a daughter, Bar- bara (26) by a previous marriage. She is a graduate of Howard University. Though he will be sorely missed, the works Dr. McNeill performed while here, will always serve as a monument to him. Tat building has since been known as the Ad- ministration 8uilding or the “ A-Buiiding.”’ hat will change on Oct. 10 when the coilege dedicates the newly renovated building and officially names it after Dr. Harrison H. Ferrell. Or. Ferretl, who died Nov. 19, 1977, came to WVSC in 1928 as an instructor in Ger- man language,- with the undefstanding that he would stil be able to pursue his musical interests which inciud- ed the Ferrell Sympnony Or- chestra whicn he founded in 1921. This orcnestra, which played out of the Chicago area, was the first Negro symphony or- chestra and was mace up of both amateur and orofessional Musicians, ‘nciuding one ot Cr. Ferrell's sisters who like Or. Ferrell, was a violinist. Or. Ferrell was a noted musi- cian and often appeared ‘with manv of the weil known singers of the time. inctuding the famous tenor, Roiand Hayes. Or. Ferrell finallv had to disband his orchestra because of the difficulty involved in traveling to Chicago to remearse and keeping the members together. However, he then formed The West Virginia State College Strings which played throughout West Virginia and the eastern section cf the coun- try. Or. Ferrell started some uni- que ventures while a German instructor at State. His classes printed and circulated a newspaper written in German and aiso presented campus plays in German. One of his classes was the first nignt class ever held on the campus, a practice that the college has since become widely known for. Although Dr. Ferrell started Out as an instructor at Strate, he quickly movea up through the ranks, becoming first the registrar and then the academic dean of the school, a position he hetd for the next 29 years until his retirement in 1965. During nis years at WVSC, Or. Ferreli met and helped many people. The one thing that everyone who met Or. Ferreli remembers was his warm, friendly manner and warm handshake. Many Alumni retur- ming to campus long after graduation wouid delight in the fact that Or. Ferreli wouid still remember their names and quite often what they had ma- ‘ored in and when they graduated. Or. Ferrell has given much credit for making WVSC na- Jonally known as 4 good academic institution and also for the cclleges continuous ac- creditation since 1927. Other schools in the state would often some to nim with their Qwn accreditation orobiems, knowing that ne was aiways willing to help. Dr. Ferreil’s wife, Gracia, a resident of Institute. donated a wealth of material which has become known as_ the “Biography of Harrison H. Fer- rail’’ to the WVSC archives. She nas aiso written a book about his ‘life which will Se Dublished ‘n tha near future, the preceeds from which will go to the colleges archives sec- tion, Perhaps only itnose peopis who met and knew Or. Ferreil know of his determination, Spirit, struggles and successes In a time wnen successes were not very easy to come by. The fact that he was stricken with polio at age 19 and told that he might never waik again was never a drawback or 4ver WVSC DEDICATION ‘from Page 5) however, has been completely renovated and remodeied. The most noticeable change to the exterior is the construc- tion of stairways and elevators on each end af the building to assist the handicappea and add extra fire safety. The interior is vastly different sccording to retired staff members who recently toured the structure, often pointing out areas which used to house their old offices or classrooms. Tre first floor houses ad- minis trative offices, registra- tion and accounting areas. The upper two floors contain classrooms, !anguage and skill ‘abs and business administra- tion areas that simulate modern offices with the latest equip- ment and word processors tied tO a computer system. The Nignlight of the building is the new auditorium which officials are touting as one of the nicest facilities of its type in the state. The new auditorium with remodeled stage facilities and seating has a capacity of ap- proximately 750, including the dalcony. The dedication ceremony will take place in the auditorium at 10:45 atm. Monday, Oct. 10. There will be an open house and tours available to view tne new facilities. William Raspberry, widely acclaimed columnist for the Washinaton Post, will be the speaker for the dedication ceremomes. Raspberry began his newspaper career with a summer job at the Indianapolis Recorder in 1956. His duties there as a reporter, photog- rapher and eaitor inspired him to join The Wasnington Post in 1962. At the Post, he worked as a library assistant, teletype operator, general assignment reporter, copy editor and assis« tant city editor. His coverage of the 1965 Watts riot earned him the Washington Post columnist Witlam Raspberry Capitai Press Club’s ‘'Jour- Nalist of the Year Award.’ !n 1967 he received a Citation of Merit in Journalism trom Lin- coin University, and has won several Guildawards for ‘nter- fretive reporting and the Wash- ingion Baltimore Newspaper Guild’s 1968 Front Page Award. RAasoberry’s column first ran in 1966, appearing four times a week in tne local section of the Post. Time magazine has writ- ten, ‘Raspberry has emerged as the most respected Black voice on any White U.S. newspaper. He considers the merits rather than tne idology of any issue. Not surprisingly, his judgements regularly nettie the Pollyannas ana militants.” !ooked upon as a hanaicap. |n fact, Dr. Ferrell recovered and waiked witr the use of a cane for the rest of his life. Or. Ferrell heiped instill his spirit ‘n many WVYSC students, many of whom work at the col- lege and still live in the area. These staff members, aiumni and college administrators are proud that the new administra- tion ouilding wiil bear the name of Dr. Ferrelt. In June of 1965 Dr. Ferrell retired from West Virginia State College after having served the institution with distinction as teacher, registrar, and academic dean, the latter position being held for twenty-nine years. As dean of the College Dr. Ferrell was responsible for assembling and maintaining a very able and dedicated faculty.
