1966 SAGA West Vigo High School West Terre Haute, Indiana Volume Six Through the doors of West Off to another class, another day. Mr. Waugh opens the gates to opportunity to the 760 students of West Vigo. Mr. Church makes big plans for the band . Do you think we can capture first in the state next year? As the doors of West Vigo opened for the 1965-66 school year, you may have been beginning or ending your school career. This Saga will help you to re¬ member the customs of the day, the classes you attended, and the friends you made. These pictures will help you recall that through these doors passed your friends, your faculty, and you. As you go through life, you will make many entrances and exits, but the most significant of these have been made at West Vigo. These four years, the years which mold the future citi¬ zens of America, may have been the happiest of your life. Many of your high school experiences have been captured in this 1965-66 Saga. CAP. 66 pmtr The band passes through these doors many times for hard practices, but it has certainly been well worth it. The school bus, a familiar sight to many Vikings, brings the students daily to the doors of West Vigo. We entered these doors tosis 1 IlijP iP • In physical education class we learned to do many things such as calisthenics and tumbling. We also learned that it is necessary to maintain a physical fitness program in which we build ourselves physically and mentally. We have learned many activities in our school. Each of them is important to the faculty, students, and the school as a whole. The classes give us the experience in leading groups and in working and cooperating with others. The knowledge which we have acquired in these four years will qualify us for our future goals in life. The students of West Vigo devote time and energy to learning the fundamen¬ tals of government, English, history, and the other subjects necessary to prepare us for business and living in the world today. Working together with a spirit of cooperation, the stu¬ dents have achieved not only this goal, but also the respect and friendship of many. The language lab is important to our foreign language department. Mrs. Gastineau is shown here with her Spanish class. My, have prices gone up? These young homemakers learn the economics of food buying. This knowledge will be of value to them in their future. Fourscore and seven years ago.. .Must be test time in Miss Lake ' s U.S. History class today, she has her map pulled down again. Is this a familiar scene to any of you? We will long remem ber this symbol of Miss Lake. Sue and Becky learn about hems, waistbands, and buttonholes. This boy is learning the funda¬ mentals of mechanical drawing. to learn . . . j ■ ■ ■ .tejiii Sue Ramsey illustrates in this picture the techniques and skills obtained in art class. One of the many things they have done this year is to furnish posters for our activities. In addition to the many fundamental courses offered at West Vigo, there are various elective subjects which help create the well-rounded student. The students not only have the op¬ portunity to learn academic subjects, but they may enroll in classes which accentuate their individual abilities . Such classes include: art, chorus, journalism, and the sciences. Many of the students who are interested in these courses and take advantage of them go on to base their careers on them after graduation. Even if you take part in one of these classes simply because you enjoy that par¬ ticular subject, it will still be of great value to you in the years ahead. [ 6 ] The staff members of the Viking Shield work hard to make our newspaper the best in the county. Fine job! and keep on learning . . . Kathy shows her Physical Science class what the book says. Her student teacher listens attentively. OK girls let’s try it one more time. All together now --one, two, three. Me, mae, ma, mo, mu. That ' s better. But, Mr. Harbaugh, P must equal 2 1 plus 2 w. Mr. Harbaugh looks on as Connie proves she is right. [ 7 ] We were closing the gap The subjects we have studied in our four years in high school will be a great help to us in the years to come. The required classes had set the foun¬ dation enabling us to build and develop the basic skills needed to succeed in life. There are certain special courses that are available to students at West Vigo which will add to their vocational abilities. Among these are: Audio- Visual, Distributive Education Classes of America, Mechanical Drawing, Special Home Economics Classes, and many others. These courses are all under the direction of highly qualified faculty members. Mr. Hilton points out to an interested shop student the fundamentals of operating this machine. A member of the Audio Visual Club, Steve Wilguess, shows the simplicity of operating a projector. [ 8 ] Mrs. Sargent looks on as her sophomore class concen¬ trates on worthwhile skills in English. between adolescents and adults Here are three representatives from West Vigo ' s D.E. C. A. Club employed in part-time work at IGA Foodliner. Through the years we will long remember those class meetings we had, or in other words... utter confusion! We entered these doors Now Kent, I’m not going to tell you again! But Sandy, you know I ' m never wrong. This is one way to win friends and sometimes lose them. Some of our students enjoy playing checkers on their noon hour. For a pause that refreshes, Have a Coke , from our machine. t 10 ] and made new friends . . . Some of us entered West Vigo as strangers to all; and some returned to make new friends and become reac¬ quainted with old ones. Special groups we re formed, and each group had its own meeting place-maybe yours was in the halls, in the library, gymnasium, or in the cafeteria. Whether you had a special group of friends or one special friend, we all found and developed new friendships that we will remember, along with all the special events, and wonderful memories as we take the final walk together and say our final good-byes to our West Vigo High. We found it was easier to study in the library than in the study hall. As in previous years, our students prefer eating in the cafeteria. Well never forget . . . the friends we made - [ 12 ] ACADEMICS As our academic life began, we entered the Door of Learn¬ ing , which when once through, one can never turn back. We found we were destined to learn, whether we wanted to or not! Although not all of us were able to understand pre¬ cision, demonstrated by the wheel and rotary stool, we all tried to keep our wheels rolling until each of us was, in his own way, better equip¬ ped for life than before we came. Mr. George Waugh-Principal Mr. Vyron Jones-Assistant Principal Administration and faculty prepare students for future. .. Always striving to guide the steps of their pupils so they may be a credit to the school and community , the administration and members of the faculty devote their time and energy to counseling and teaching the funda¬ mentals of government, English, his¬ tory, and the other subjects necessary to prepare young men and women for business and living in the world today. Working together with a spirit of co¬ operation and friendship, the adminis¬ tration and faculty has achieved not only this goal, but also the respect and friendship of their pupils. We, the students of West Vigo, are proud of our fine faculty. They are Chris Obst, Office Manager-Treasurer; Imogene Rippy, Education Secretary; and Diane Switzer, Guidance Secretary. Theyspend many hours in the office assisting students, teachers, and deans and keeping the school records up to date. Non-teaching Personnel Thomas Barker, William Maurer, Ray Pearson, Arthur Phelps, and Rosemary Seckinger make up the staff of custo dians. They always keep our school looking presentable. We certainly owe a great deal of thanks to these women for all the fine meals they have prepared forusduring the year. They are Roxie McPheeters, Ethel Monnett, Martha Robinson, Doris Silcock, Alvena Hamilton, and Rose Mary Menestrina. The new system instituted this year of having two lunch lines was popular with the students. i MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Karen Ostermiller Chris Aldridge BEST LEADERS Jan Nay Bill Long 1966 Senior The Senior Hall of Fame is an honor bestowed on a senior boy or girl who is chosen most outstanding in each par¬ ticular field. These officers planned many activities for their senior year. Seniors—Class of 1966 The seniors of 1966 have come a long way since the day they took their first uncertain steps through the doors of West Vigo High School. They will never forget the short skirts, the straight-looking hair-dos, the total look, and the Frug, Watusi, and Jerk. Many events have taken place since that day until now as they hesitantly prepare for another step-- graduation. As each departing senior leaves , he will come to many important crossroads in his life. The future with which they are faced will be a test of these past four years. As their senior year comes to a close, West Vigo High School bids them farewell and hopes that each may do his best in the years to come in whatever role he might play. Sophomores enter enthusiastically This year was one of excitement and enthusiasm for the members of the Sophomore class. Most had realized that West Vigo offers many and varied scholastic and extra-curricular op¬ portunities and lost no time in making their 1 s known as an ambitious and spirited class by taking part in num¬ erous activities -- not as followers, but as leaders. The end of this year brought sighs of relief as the sopho¬ mores put away their gym suits and closed geometry and world history books. The sophomores, without actu¬ ally realizing it, have completed one half of their high school education and are eagerly looking forward to an even more important year as they take their places as upperclassmen.
