These groups worked hard planning activities and class events, and collecting our dues. In our sophomore year Dave Alig headed the executive council which led us in choosing our class sponsors, colors, and flower. Our other capable officers this year were Bill Newlin, Pat Selko, and Vera Eckert. Our junior year was important to us, for we had charge of the biggest event of the year-the Junior Prom. Tom Calhoun was our president, assisted by Dave Alig, Pat Selko, Vera Eckert, and Bonnie Mugnani. With our senior year came innumer- able jobs for our executive council such as the ordering of graduation announce- ments. Tom Calhoun again was our president, and the other officers were Chum Kovach, Diane Vinkovich, Vera Eckert, and Martha Kotchin, We thank these people who gave so much of their talent and time to help make the Class of 1958 so successful. Every Monday morning Student Council, composed STUDENT COUNCIL the voice of the students in school affairs of a cabinet elected by the student body in l957 and a representative from each homeroom, met to discuss various school activities and problems. The students took great interest in planning these activities which consisted of a magazine campaign to earn money for Student Council projects, the sponsorship of a foreign exchange student, Tony Gimenez, from Spain, the planning of the student exchange program with Fort Morgan, Colorado, Shuffle Shop, and various paid assemblies which were held throughout the year. The agenda and additional plans for the meetings were arranged by the cabinet at their Tuesday morn- ing meetings with sponsors, Mr. Metz and Miss Wadlinger. '58 proved to be a very successful year for President Bill and Student Council. The success was mostly due to the excellent co-operation found among the admin- istration, faculty, and students. The newspaper staff, composed of students in-- terested in journalism, worked under an editorial staff headed by editor-in-chief, Martha Willis. lt was their duty to write the feature articles, report the cur- rent news of the school, and photograph its leaders and students-all of which made up the paper. Under the able guidance of the sponsor, Miss Delp, and the business adviser, Miss Armstrong, the West Wind for 1958 was extremely successful. This is a national organization of which the members are chosen on the basis of the following traits: Scholar- ship, Leadership, Service, and Character. The members were selected by the teachers and included twenty-six seniors and seven iuniors. A tapping assembly was held at Two Year Members Seated- B. Mugnani, P. Selka, J. Windhorst, M. Kight, K. Later, the boys and girls, wear- ing suits and white dresses, were formally initiated into the society. A replica of the fiaming torch of truth, symbol of the National Honor Society, was made into pins and given to the members to keep as a remembrance of the honor bestowed on them. This year has proved to be the most successful the Y- Teen has ever had. Vera Eckert, president, possessed the enthusiasm which drove this group on to new horizons. This year, Y-Teen Club exemplified West View's motto: Not to be served, but to serve. ln May, the group visited an orphanage and gave a picnic for all the children. Y-Teen members spent many hours making scrap- books for a children's home at Easter. Two of the outstanding meetings were a lecture given by a model from Earl Wheeler's on good grooming, and the visitation of a woman in the armed services. The success of Y-Teens can be attributed largely to Mrs. Craig, the sponsor, whose ceaseless efforts to improve the club never dwindled. The fine fellowship and spirit of all the members made this a memorable year. Top- Vera Eckert, President, chats with Y- Teen sponsor, Mrs. Craig. Bottome- Hard at work at their refreshment stand. West View's hall patrol was composed of thirty- eight boys who capably directed the traffic in our crowded halls. Secretary of Traffic, Bill Hadfield, and his assistant, Dave Weitzel, chose the members on the basis of bravery, their ability to stand on their own two feet, and their unselfish desire to put duty before their own lives, These boys were placed at strategic positions throughout the halls, and they did their best to organize traffic and keep it flowing smoothly. A few of the more courageous boys volunteered for lunchroom service. Their task was to restrain our more ravenous students from trampling their weaker compatriots into the dust as they bounded through the lunch line. During the opening days of school, the hall patrol members were helpful in acquainting the sophomores, new students, and some of our more absent-minded upperclassmen with the intricacies of our school hall- ways. We sincerely wish to extend our appreciation to our hall patrol members for their faithful and suc- cessful service this year. 61 HALL PATROL our private police force The hall patrol-in action This year's Pep Club has been one of West View's most successful. Ably led by President Ann Kleinschmidt, Pep Club has raised school spirits to its peak and kept up the morale of all the teams. We have Pep Club to thank for the colorful and elaborate decorations seen at our pep assemblies. Many hours of work were spent after school by the Decoration Committee in trimming the auditorium, Members of the Ticket Committee were responsible for collect- ing tickets and ushering at all of the home games. The many clever posters seen in the halls were the result of the Publicity and Poster Committees' work. We also owe thanks to Mr. Caruso, Pep Club's sponsor, for the help he has given them in making this year such a successful one. PEP CLUB BERT Top- A. MacMichaeI, Treasurer, J. Some ot the pen pals were received through a special request made to the Director of Foreign Communications in Japan, a venture which proved quite interesting and beneficial. Monthly meetings, ably led by President John Pittner and his cabinet, were held to discuss various topics such as atomic energy, rockets, and radio. The goal of each member was to first enter his project in the Science Fair held at West View and then, if the project was judged to be worthy, to enter it in the Science Fair at Buhl Planetarium. Mrs. Gibson, the sponsor of S.A.O., provided any necessary assistance or leadership needed by the students when constructing their projects. Enthusiasm on the part of the members in this club and their undying interest in science has made S.A.O. a very worthwhile club at West View. Mrs. Gibson chats with some of her fellow scientists. We at West View High are privileged to have Junior Achievement, a national organi- zation, as one of our activities. Junior Achievement is sponsored by United States Steel, Gulf Corporation, Royal Type- writer, and other successful firms. The club met once every week in the Malony Building, located on the Boulevard of the Allies. The members are required to apply for a charter, issue a prospectus to arouse interest, and sell stock in the junior company they choose. There they manufacture a product and market it to individuals and companies. These companies are organized for profit, and with sound efificient management, they resulted in a dividend for the stockholders. Through the educational and social aspects of Junior Achievement, the members of this organization will remember it for a long time to come. The West View students, chosen by the ofifices they held or their class rank, arrived in Fort Morgan on Sunday morning, April thirteenth, and were enter- tained for a full week by the Coloradians. The host exchange students of Fort Morgan organized and executed a very interesting schedule of field trips, including trips to Estes Park, Denver, and Boulder. Classes and social events exemplifying Western hospitality were included on the agenda. The West View students were hosts to the thirty Fort Morgan students during the week of February ninth, but the Fort Morgan students reappeared on the scene when their train, which was returning them from a sup- plementary trip to Washington, D.C., left them once again in the Pittsburgh train station. During their week's stay in West View, they went on many field trips and also attended classes. The student exchange was of great value and will be long remembered, especially by those who were directly active in this educa- tional experience. Brandt. Standing- W, Timberlake, W. Newlin, K. The work of the staffs began with the new school term, when they participated in the patron campaign which helped to finance the annual. The literary and activity staffs undertook the task of senior write-ups and clubs, while the features and sports staffs handled the social and sports events of the school. The illustrations which enliven the pages are the work of the art staff. Not to be forgotten is the typing staff, whose duty it was to type all the copy which was to appear in the book. Without the guidance of the sponsors, Mr. Herman and Mr. Puchta, the Westvian staff could never have published such a successful yearbook. ACTIVITIES AND FEATURES STAFFS First Row- B. SWING BAND soft and sweet-loud and moving-this band plays them all! Saturday night again at West View High School. Polished brass and ivory keys glitter and shine, basking in the twinkling reflections of light from the mirrored revolving globe which casts mellow lights over the dance floor. The Swing Band of T957-1958 sets the mood forthe evening with its pulsating Night Train. Another Shuffle Shop has been made a success with the smooth iazz and swing of this famous band. This year the band sections were skillfully co-ordinated under the dynamic leadership of Jack Anthony. The group was composed of seniors, juniors, and sophomores, all ot whom were talented on their saxophones, trumpets, clarinets, trombones, and piano. Certainly, it is known by all that, as in the past, the Swing Band has established a fine reputation for its terrific music. 79 Sue and Paul ask to have a favorite song played rf I, llllrpii ff I f fill' , I f ff fl all XQQ , AM V 'lbw , M U4 A 2 N 5.3 Q Athlettc actlvltues can do much to develop nndlvndual maturlty They teach us to co operate wlth ecch other and to work togetl er as a team oward a common goal Although each man ls important because of his Ind: vdual abtlttle he IS even more Important because he becomes a member ot' a sungle functuontng ut Thus promotes a spnrut f fellowshup among the members of the team It develops our respect for the abnlttues and shortcomnngs of others Through lcague com petttlon we cre taught good sport manshlp Learnlng to take lo ses well vutal to our development as lndlvnduals Competltlon ID sports can teach us to take defeats gracefully as mature people should as well as teach us to be gracious victors Because spcrts actlvmes promote these good qualutues IH the mdnvodual they form an Important lunk In our cham swf' N' M Sf- X K! Mn 'Q 'WZ' VARSITY GAMES plenty of action all four quarters WEST VIEW T4 MCKEES ROCKS I2 Our boys traveled to McKees Rocks to open the T957 season. They were out to prove they were better than preseason predictions and did just that. Touchdowns by Dave Alig and Chum Kovach, and Dave's fine toe were all the Indians needed to start the season off on the right foot. Only a stout Rocks' defense prevented the Indians from scoring again when Larry Klink ran a fumble to their four yard line. It was a fine start for the new season. WEST VIEW I8 SHALER 27 lt was a sad opening night at home for the Indians as they met a terrific Husky team. Although behind all the way, the boys never stopped trying as touchdowns by Dave Alig and Chum Kovach made the game fairly close. lt was a disheartening loss to take from the close rivals, but our boys set out determined to do better the next week. WEST VIEW 18 ALLDERDICE 0 Determined to make up for the previous week's loss, the Indians started on the opening kickoff and never stopped as they defeated a top-rated Allderdice team. Touchdown runs by Ole Olsen and Churn Kovach, and a long pass from Glenn Abel to Chum Kovach for another touchdown, were more than the Indians needed so that they could take home their second scalp of the season. WEST VIEW 21 OLIVER I3 Our boys closed out the exhibition season as they racked up a 21-O halftime score and went on to win easily over determined Oliver High School. The brothers were really on the ball that night. Glenn Abel threw a pass to his brother, Bruce, for the first score, and a few minutes later they reversed the procedure with Bruce throwing to Glenn. Bill Hadfield scored the third touchdown, sending the fans home happy for the third time this season. WEST VIEW I2 TRINITY 2 On October l8, the Indians traveled to Little Washington to start their AA games. ldled an extra week because ofthe cancellation by Monongahela, the boys were glad to get back into action. Although riddled by iniuries, a touchdown pass from Glenn Abel to Doug Weir and a one yard plunge by Bill Hadfield were enough to insure the Indians their fourth victory of the season. WEST VIEW I3 BALDWIN 25 The Indians traveled to Baldwin to take on their second AA opponent. The rugged Baldwin line was a little too toughg they took the opening kickoff for a touchdown and never stopped until the final gun. Touchdowns by Captain Chum Kovach and Dave Alig kept the West View fans' hope alive until late in the fourth quarter. Handicapped by cold weather, our boys never stopped giving every- thing they had and a little more. This loss knocked us from the AA race. WEST VIEW 20 PENN 25 The Indians closed out the home season as they lost a heartbreaker to a rugged Penn team. The dream of winning on Parents Night and for the seniors on Senior Day fell apart as Penn stopped the Indians' last drive late in the fourth period. Touchdowns by Dave Alig, Dave Weitzel, and Bill Hadfield kept Penn fighting back the entire game. Both schools knew only too well how evenly matched they had been in that ball game when Penn left the West View Bowl that night. WEST VIEW 0 MT. LEBANON 40 The Indians closed the season in a contest against the Blue Devils. The Mounties took the opening kickoff and didn't stop the entire night as they scored in every period. The Indians' favorite aerial attack was greatly handicapped by a wet field and cold weather. This brought to a close a season far more successful than anyone thought it could or would be. Coaches Mario Martorelli and Guy Guadagnino deserve a lot of credit for bringing home a four and four record for the T957 season. C mon, Mike! We want a basket. 3 N, First Row- B, Smith, J. Reed, M. VARSITY BASKETBALL A-Qx, 'fat Ti West View's 1957-58 varsity basketball team started the season by bringing home a shining victory over Butler and went on to end the season with a 13-8 record in section competition. Coach Mario Martorelli 19x K. Hughes and B. Martin, managers. and the team provided a thrilling basketball season for the Indian fans. The starting lineup consisted of the following: Seniors --Mike Duesing, the only returning letterman and cap- tain totaling 251 points, Chum Kovcuch, who ended the season with 145 markersg iuniors - Rudy Raida, Bob Soleau, and Bob Patrick scoring 282, 186, and 121 points, respectively. Bruce Abel, a shining sophomore, became an addition during the season to the formidable quintet and totaled 145 points. Facing the annual problem of few holdovers and a tough schedule, Mr. Weixel did a wonderful iob and built up a very good team. At the end of the season, West View scored three whirlwind victories, decisively downing Mt. Lebanon, West Allegheny, and Shadyside. Among the boys on this fine team were five seniors: Ray Nunamaker, Dave Allen, Don Gaus, Bill Newlin, and Dave Weitzel. Dave Weitzel won the district tournaments at Shaler and got to the finals at the regionals at Washington, thus compiling one of the finest records in West View's history. Ed Luteran, with help from Bill Hadfield after an iniury, held down the hot corner while Bruce Abel and Gary Kost worked at shortstop. Glenn Abel and Don Bechtold carried the load on the other side of the keystone. They included Judy Bird, vice president, Elsie Peck, secretary, and Nancy Altenhott, treasurer. The sponsor of the club this year was Laverne Raeder. The girls met every other Thursday at the Bellevue Bowling Alleys and their averages for the night were recorded by the secretary. The aim of a G.A.A. girl is to try to earn as many points as possible. One point is given each time a girl attends G.A.A., and extra credit is given if she is on a winning team. MAY DAY the queen is crowned There was suspense in the air the night of Friday, May third. lt was the night the May Queen of West View High School was to be chosen, and no one knew yet who it was. The audience was hushed by the dimming houselights, and the fair maidens of the court entered with their escorts. After taking their seats on the stage, the attendants of the Queen entered, who were Ollie Bovill, Linda Brandt, Beverly Sowyak, Julia Srsic, and Sue Waite. All eyes were fixed on the shut doors. The time had arrived for the Three Graces to enter. Slowly they opened and revealed the Lady-in-Waiting, Judy Weber, who was followed shortly afterward by the Maid- of-Honor, Sue Clement. The doors parted for the last time and there stood our most lovely Queen, Virginia Larkin. After being crowned, she was enter- tained by dancers, singers, instrumental soloists, and the court iesters. Of course, every activity must have a name, and what was more appropriate at this time of year than the JUNIOR ACTIVITY Hgnivigsknaht ball How 'bout playing Night Train again? The Colonial certainly is a nice place to dance Gnivigsknaht fgasunteitj Ball, Thanksgiving spelled backwards. It was an enioyable evening for every- body. The hours were spent dancing, eating, talking, and chasing Freddie, our photog- rapher-by far the most popular man attend- ing the activity. Dress consisted of suits for the fellows and pretty dressy dresses for the girls. The Gnivigsknaht Ball was very successful and will always be remembered as a high- light of our Junior year. The girls looked so lovely as they were escorted through the receiving line with their handsome dates. Couples could be seen dancing dreamily to the music of Baron Elliot, while others chatted at the tables or played Goofy Golf outside. Time flew quickly, and soon the After-Prom Party began. Rock 'n Roll, starring Johnny and Joe, was featured and music to sleep to provided, along with a feast of barbecues, potato salad, and milk. lt was early in the morning when the couples decided to head for home. Sleepily, but happily, they all agreed that the memories of this prom would always linger with them. li - 11.155, -f Q 5 I' '. .Z T 559 f . ag - ff 22 ' f ffm Q- , . , . f l 'O as -f97i 106 Um Wwfmgedalfe pfzam sz 'lf X 4 My VME 'if IQO Only? in Kg! ff' 14 is Q s ' ,r 'fig uffl Y? SENIOR DINNER DANCE the beginning of the end Dishes clanged and waitresses in black scurried around the Orangeblossom Room at the Gateway Plaza. The vultures from West View were there for their Senior Dinner Dance and just had to be fed. Swiss steak was on the menu, accompanied by a salad and vegetables, which satisfied the hunger of the class of '58. After eating, and eating, and more eating, the guys and girls leaned back in their chairs, and turned their attention from their empty plates to the speakers' table. The Huntsmen Band provides music to dance by. Greetings were then given by Dr. Rice, Mr. Luke, the class sponsors, and Tom Calhoun, class president. The class was entertained by the Senior Girls' Ensemble. Dancing followed the delicious dinner and lasted until 12:00. All of the seniors agreed unanimously that the activity was worthwhile, the food de- licious, and the dancing enjoyable. They left, however, feeling a little sad, for they realized that this event marked the beginning of the end of their senior year. Hi, girls! How's the food? ,N garag- 54 Sorta crowded, huh?
