ill be those of joy and not of fear! alutatorian Mike Paradis is salutatorian with a grade point average of 3.45. He has been very active in school and community both at Highland and at West Valley. This year Mike was elected A. S. B. President and did a fine job organizing the Stu- dent Council and other clubs. He also served as chairman of the Student Handbook and Constitu- tion Committees. Mike is very interested in F.F. A. and 4-H work. As a sophomore and junior he was treasurer and president of Highlands F. F. A. Chapter and he participated in the Parliamentary Procedure Speaking teams. Last year Mike earned his degree of State Farmer. ln 4-H, Mike also held many offices and has won a great number of trophies, ribbons, and banners for showing live- stock and western riding horses. In 1954-, he was a member of the 4-H Washington Livestock Judg- ing Team at Chicago. Mike was born in Yakima, July 16, 1938. He always tried to accept responsibility and do his part well. An indication of Mike's fine character is the fact that he was taken into the Honor So- ciety as a junior and this year was selected as the student representative to West Valleys citizen committee. Next year Mike plans to attend the State College of Washington and major in Animal Hus- bandry. We are sure he will continue to partici- pate actively in school and community affairs, and make as great a contribution as he has in the past. aledictorian Sylvia Bierman, valedictorian, was born in Bison, South Dakota, on September 13, 1938. She began her high school career in Cresbard, South Dakota, spending her freshman and sophomore years there. As a junior she attended Yakima Senior High and completed her high school edu- cation here at West Valley. Sylvia, better known as Salli. says she has really enjoyed her high school life. While earning a grade point average of 3.81, she has enjoyed numerous activities and held various offices. She was a band member for three years. and partici- pated in declamation, paper reporting, and the all-school play her first two years. This year. as a senior, she served as a song leader, editor of the Wimoah, senior class treasurer, president of the Honor Society. was a member of the Library Club and Constitution Committee and was in the senior play. Salli plans to attend Pacific Lutheran College next year, and hopes to gain a Bachelor of Sci- ence degree in Nursing. 99 is 3 .f i Ht- Rt 23
