Longfellow, is dedicated to the citizens of our community who un- dertook to build our West Valley High in spite of the headaches and heartaches it involved. iilluild me straight ditor's essa e Many people do not realize how much work there is to putting out a yearbook. The first WI- MOAll was no exception. The staff has put in long hours of hard work to make it a success. At the be- ginning of the year, most of us did not know any of the fundamentals of such a publication. We worked hard and now our hope is that you will enjoy the book. The theme of the WIMOAll is The Building of a Ship, by Longfellow. We think the building of the ship, as portrayed in this poem, is symbolic of how West Valley was built, from the construction of its buildings to the organization of its clubs, and how our lives and characters were developed this past school year. To Miss Christensen, without whose willing guidance and help we would have been lost, to Nancy Manning, cover designer and artist of the division pages, and to the staff go my sincere thanks. It is my hope that this book will serve as a record of one of your school years that you most enjoyed and in which you played a part in creat- ing the early history of a promising, wonderful, new school. Others have allowed it to pass hy unnoticed. At the top of the list of ohservant people. we would place the people of the West Valley Community. Our people took a legislative directive, exam- ined it carefully in terms of the education of our youth, and hy vote, created the West Valley School district. It is proper that this year hook, our first, should honor these parents and patrons who had such vision and foresight. You students and your parents have converted a dream into a reality and made an actuality out of a foresight. You gave form, life and purpose to an idea as you wrote the Student Body constitution, cooperated with the builders, conducted class despite the noise of the saw in the hall, started an athletic program without a full complement of upper classmen, created an enthusiastic cheering section even when the score was lopsided against you, made new friends, organized the necessary cluhs and activities, wrote and mimeographed the school news releases, developed music and dramatics departments, displayed FFA and FHA accomplishments, and made policy decisions in the representative student council. Yes, each new situation de- manded adjustments to a new school and new standards. These were learning situ- ations. Student opportunities were unlimited. You have done well. A school is not just a huilding, hut a life, your life. Your aspirations, successes, your life. as lived in Vliest Valley High School make a school out of our building. This is what the parents saw as they looked to the fixture for West Valley. This is what you students have patterned for yourself. your school mates. and the hundreds of chil- dren now too small to rememher when there was no West Valley High School. They will some day follow in the traditions which you have. this year, created. The pattern is good. They will take up where you have left off. Words are inadequate to tell the story of West Valley, but no words are necessary to see that the future is secure if people everywhere can meet their challenges as our decisions are hased on what is best for hoys and glflg and youth of our community courageously as have the people in West Valley. We face the future confidently when Q ecretalje fs. Miss Evers L5 Mrs. Cherry 0 9 uperintenden Nlessa e Principal' llesgege ,?VM, ttilfbfzv In the Ruins of Ur a room has been unearthed that was a school 4,500 years ago. Clay tablets of instruction used there still exist. Schools and education have been a part of every known civili- zation. Education today is an accumulation of all the things education has been in the past. The purposes of education are many and varied in America, where a high degree of freedom has prevailed, but some widely accepted purposes may be listed as follows: 111 To prepare the in- dividual to make a living and to make progress in his vocation, or to help in that process, Q25 To prepare the individual for mature and complete livingapersonal and family, social and civic-in today's world, and to help develop moral, ethical, and spiritual values which benefit both the in- dividual and society, and CSD To increase man's understanding of the arts and humanities and his appreciation of his cultural heritage. Education is responsible in maintaining continuity of thought, and culture and moral values be- tween the present and the past. The umain roadn of accumulated knowledge and fundamental cuture, leading from the remote past through the present and into the future, should be kept wide open and well paved. There is a great need in this confused world of today for better morals, more self-disci- pline, and a sounder sense of values. Possibly the greatest contribution education can make toward meeting that need is to give all who pass through its doors a deeper awareness of what we owe to the great artists and scientists, the teachers, thinkers, inventors, the explorers and statesmen, the poets and patriots of the past. The citizens ofthe West Valley School District have recognized, as people before them, the im- portance of education. These fine school buildings and facilities are a monument to that belief in education. It is our desire that the members of the graduating class, though attending only one year here, have been prepared in some measure to meet the demands of life. Some of you will be going on to college, some will take your place in the work-life of the community, others will join the armed forces of our country for her defense. ln any event our wish is that you will attain a great measure of success in your chosen field lar ga ecretar 4 I -rlf ' Lay square the blocks upon the ship Left to right: Mr. C. These fine men have given many long hours of their time to carry on the business necessary for the operation of a school. From the first, they supervised the building of our school so that we might have the best facilities possible. lt is because the school board and the people who elected them have a sincere interest in the younger generation, that the West Valley High School became a reality. Their job is not all work and no play though. This fact can be evidenced almost any Monday night about midnight when the suspicious smell of coffee and sound of hearty laughter issues from behind those closed doors, where the school board is supposedly carrying on such solemn business. and follow well this plan of mine , I LLL, Mah. President Mike Paradis proved to he a very able organizer and conducted the meetings in such a way that the husiness was acted upon swiftly, and without confusion. One of the accomplishments of the council was learning and practicing the rules of parliamentary procedure. The Student Council was responsible for deciding many of the rules and regulations of the school and supervised the voting on school colors. school song, etc. They also approved all the school dances and parties. Most of the business and problems of West Valley passed through the Student Council and each representative was responsible for carrying back important news to his home room so that everyone in the school would be informed on what the council was doing and could therefore take a more active interest and participation in student government. or only what is strong and good . . . The class of 56', is deeply grateful and indebted to the people that have made the attainment of this milestone possible. We are proud and honored to be the first graduates from this new school. and we hope that the examples we set can be respectfully followed in the years to come. ln the process of building and establishing our new school, many decisions had to be made and traditions set. There was an abundance of hurdles to cross, but we feel we did our part and are proud of the job we did. But overlooking the minor problems we faced, we happily recall the gayer moments. lndelibly imprinted in our minds are the memories of the many activities that we so genuinely looked forward to, and so thoroughly enjoyed. Mistletoe Fantasyv will be remembered by all as the theme of our thrilling Christmas ball. Chuck Toop and Salli Bierman mounted the sparkling antiquated cutter, drawn by a mystically beau- tiful reindeer, to reign as King and Queen of the ball. Ever level and ever true to the toil and the task we have to dog Seated : Salli Bierman, Treasurer janet Ferguson, President Cary Smith, Vice President Nancy Manning, Secretary Standing: Larry Walker and Carol Schonewill, U f Activity Managers ' Les Lennington, Parllamenlarlan Mrs Doris I :sk Advisor Good drama was displayed in the Senior class play entitled 'The Little Minister. A double cast of over thirty was used to make the play a fine success. Another highlight of the year was the Junior-Senior prom. The Juniors were fine hosts and made it an occasion that will not soon be forgotten. Finally came the day we had been striv- ing for and yet dreading. Graduation time had arrived. Announcements were sent, caps and gowns donned and tassels meticulously put in place. The march started and soon each ld in his hand a diploma, the symbol of ac- omplishment. ln years to come, when we hear the famil- iar refrains of Buckle Down Vllest Valley and see the fighting llams engaged in royal battle. we will surely remember West Valley High School and recall all the memorable oc- casions when we wore the beautiful blue and red. As a sophomore and junior he was treasurer and president of Highlands F. F. A. Chapter and he participated in the Parliamentary Procedure Speaking teams. Last year Mike earned his degree of State Farmer. ln 4-H, Mike also held many offices and has won a great number of trophies, ribbons, and banners for showing live- stock and western riding horses. In 1954-, he was a member of the 4-H Washington Livestock Judg- ing Team at Chicago. Mike was born in Yakima, July 16, 1938. He always tried to accept responsibility and do his part well. An indication of Mike's fine character is the fact that he was taken into the Honor So- ciety as a junior and this year was selected as the student representative to West Valleys citizen committee. Next year Mike plans to attend the State College of Washington and major in Animal Hus- bandry. We are sure he will continue to partici- pate actively in school and community affairs, and make as great a contribution as he has in the past. aledictorian Sylvia Bierman, valedictorian, was born in Bison, South Dakota, on September 13, 1938. These events were certainly two of the highlights of the year. Another activity of the Junior Class was the Junior Class play, Jumpinf Jupiterf, a comedy in three acts, directed by Mr. Lawrence Low- ther. The cast is to be highly commended for their excellent performance and for setting such a fine precedent as the first West Valley group to present a play. The Juniors were also very excited when they ordered their class rings, the first to be worn from West Valley High School. Their main activities were money-making projects to help finance the Junior Prom and Junior- Senior Banquet next year. They sponsored a very successful Valentine Dance in Feb- ruary, which everyone remembers because of the free cokes and beautiful decorations. They had a large representation in Student Council, Pep Club, and Lettermen's Club as well as the other clubs. In fact, the Sophomoreis participation in sports has given them invaluable experience which will greatly aid West Valley's chances for winning teams in the next two years. We are expecting the Sophomores to make a great contribution to the reputation of Wfest Valley and we know they will do a fine job as upper-classmen. On that first day of school they were all a little scared, wondering what a big high school would be like. They were also thrilled with new books and the first explorations into the mysteries of algebra and other new subjects. Soon they had made many new friends and really began to get into the swing of things. The Freshmen started right off by taking an active part in school activities. Many of the girls participated in Pep Club and Drill Team, and the boys made a fine showing in all sports. The Fresh- man basketball team beat Selahis freshmen by one point in one of West Valleyls most exciting games. With Mrs. Lorraine Slagle as their advisor, the Freshman class elected their officers and made plans for their first money making project, a Tolo Dance in February. If their projects in future years are as successful as their dance and they continue through their school years with such enthus- iasm, we are assured that the Freshmen of '56 will continue to uphold the traditions of our school and make West Valley a better school. The paper is written, edited and dis- tributed by the students themselves. School news is thoroughly covered in each edition of the paper consisting of edi- torials, school activities, gossip, sports, and public opinion polls. Because this was the beginning of a paper at West Valley, the staff had many precedents to set. The name was selected after being voted on by the students, the staff was elected to fill the major positions on the paper, and the number of publications was decided upon. The paper staff did a fine job under the auspices of Miss Martin. Now that the job is finished, we will relate some of the history of this first WIMOAH. The name of our yearbook was chosen by the student body. Several suggestions for its name were presented by the students. The word WIMOAH was made by using Wl to represent Wide Hollow, MO to represent Mountain View, and AH to represent Ahtanum Valley. the three grade schools whose students eventually become members of West Valley High. Work on the WIMOAH had a late start, due to the fact that there was no staff. Many year- books have their theme and lay-out decided upon the summer before school opens. All this was done for the WIMOAH in November. Members of the staff had had very little previous experience. With the excellent and indis- pensable help of Miss Barbara Christensen. advisor. and several conferences with representatives from the Republic Press. we learned about the publishing of a yearbook. Four members were able to attend the Republic Press Yearbook conference in January. At that meeting. they learned many interesting facts about how the book is published and received pointers and tips on such things as copy. photography. choosing paper, and arranging material on the pages. The group was also taken on a tour of the plant to see the presses and printing processes. After the conference. the annual staff turned back to their work with renewed vigor. Advertising was sold, copy written, pictures taken, pages arranged and rearranged, and there was endless typing to be done. At last deadlines were successfully met and now at the end of the year, the annual staff looks proudly on the first WIMOAH. We acknowledge and are very grateful for the help we received from the Republic Press. Mr. Harold Scofield, photographer, and Kennell-Ellis Studios. out the year. Over fifty boys were present. This was narrowed down to thirty- four hard working, spirited team mates. A They were faced with many obstacles. They had no showers, no dressing rooms, no field of their own, no goal post, no schedule, and no equipment. For many, this was their first season of football. Yet, with practice, many boys learned and improved steadily. The wonderful school spirit displayed by all the students and the cute mascot Butchie', added to their fighting spirit. They experienced the thrill of wearing the first new uniform of the school-the beautiful Columbia Blue suits. Although it was not a completely successful year in games won, it was very suc- cessful in terms of experience gained. Coach Art Hutton and his assistant Elmer Cher- ry, worked patiently with them and were of considerable help. The letter winners for the season were Ray Esparza, Dave Larsen, Tal Under- wood, Ralph Velasquez, John Gavin, Chris Perez, Bob Jones, Cary Smith, Dick Birk- by, Bob Bonnett, Chuck Collins, Fred Hanson, Carl Brown, Malon Zeigler, Bernerd Lovestrand, John Ashbaugh, Lonnie Stull, George Velikanje, Jerry Shafer, Paul Mor- ton, Walt Swanson, Larry Walker, and Craig Hotchkiss. The boys gained experience which we expect them to use to good advantage next year. With only one Senior and only a few Juniors on the squad, most of the team will be back for two more years. At the end of the season, West Valley was awarded the sportsmanship trophy which stands as a tribute to the fine showing, conduct, and sportsmanship displayed by the West Valley team and fans. Now we are looking towards the day when we can win both the district championship and the sportsmanship trophies. Coach Elmer Cherry is to be commended for his work with the team. We're sure that next year will bring better luck for the Rams. They won five out of twenty-one games and provided many thrilling moments for the spectators during the season. Two of their most exciting victories were those over Selahis freshmen squad and Highland. Both games were won by very close scores. The 'ABN squad was coached by Art Hutton who did a very fine job with the boys. Many of the team were freshmen who show tremendous promise of becoming great players in the next three years.
