Early injuries to key players forced many players to play unfamiliar positions and on both offense and defense. lnterceptions, fumbles, and penalties stalled Eagle drives short of the goalline. Yet, despite these handicaps, Eagle achievements were many. They had 2,160 total yards, 280 more than the opposition, had more first downs while Jeff Doud broke the single game rushing record with 263 yards, and in doing so, set a new school career rushing record with 1520 yards. The biggest achievement of all however, was the pride installed in their team by the players. Despite misfortune they didn't quit, and as a result started West Valley back on a winning philosophy. Top Left: Coach Miller supervises practice. Left: Steve Gannon, football co- captain and Jeff Doud, co-captain and Inspirational award winner. Top: Eagles in preparation. Small in size but big on heart were the trademarks of the 1971 Eagle B-Squad football team. Although playing teams that were bigger and stronger, the players more than made up for their lack of size with desire. Against EV, a goalline stand with but seconds left proved the difference between victory and defeat. By ending the season with a 4-3 record, and a third place finish, they proved that the biggest aren't always the best. Picked by local papers to win the Border League Championship, the Eagles proceeded to drop their first five games. The only pre-Christmas win being over Couer d'Alene, which was later to be second in the Idaho State Championship. Regrouping after Christmas the Eagles won six of their last ten and ended up third in league standings. Highlights of the year were: Two wins over CVg the first by 15 points and the second by one point at CV in which Bill Conant's 20 foot set shot swished through at the buzzer, capping a comeback in which the Eagles had been down by five points with but one minute left to playg Bill Peterson being chosen on the All-Border first team, Kevin Krebs to the second, and Bob Campbell receiving honorable mentiong earning a place in the district 8 playoff. Three of the five losses were to Border League teams, but each school who defeated WV, was also beaten by them. There will be some great competition among this group as they strive for positions on the future JV and Varsity teams. Leading scorer for the season was Nelson McAlister, followed closely by Al McElroy. Rebounding strength came from Gary Burchart, Jerry Focht, and Jack Lewis. McElroy was elected honorary captain by his teamates to cap a fine season. The Junior Varsity basketball team was established for the benefit of junior boys wishing another year of formal basketball competition. Interchange of personnel with the varsity team is common, thus giving boys the opportunity to improve their skills and move up to the varsity team. All junior varsity competitors are encouraged to turn out again their senior year.
