During the 1969-70 season, Varsity and Junior Varsity debate teams matched wits with thirteen schools in and around Spokane. Everyone went along for the tournaments at Gonzaga, Ellensburg, EWSC, Bellevue and the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. The District 8 League Tournament, attended by fourteen area schools was held recently here at West Valley. Both novices and veterans participated for the rest of the year in such varied events as The Veterans of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy contest, The Lauderbaugh Commemorative Series of Scenic Inland Empire Bus Tours, occasional pizza parties and a series of demonstration speeches for the West Valley English and Social Studies Departments. The players were always striving for the gain of a yard, or the tackle that often breaks bones and tears muscles. Those sidelined experienced the anxiety of wanting to compete although prohibited by injuries. While plays are created and executed in the minds of the injured, a great concern for the players is aroused. The enthusiasm of rallies transmitted a strong current of spirit throughout the student body. Although many times leaving the games a little cold and disappointed, spectators were rewarded with certain strategic plays that went for long gains. Although West Valley did not achieve their expectations, their courage and hopefulness, inspired the student body to new heights of enthusiasm, and gave encouragement to the returning players. ,Lf I 1 .. West Valley featured a predominately senior team most of whom playedjunior varsity ball last year. Q.-Xbovel Nlanagers Dan Potter and Allan Dice are caught in the endless routine of theirbiob. With a fine core of varsity wrestlers back from last year, West Valley's wrestling team went into the 1969-70 season looking for a good year. They found it with a 6-0 Border League championship record and a 9-4f1 overall, showing good dual meet strength. Along with this came the first ever shut out of a varsity wrestling team, a 40-0 whitewashing of Central Valley. With the dual meet season out ofthe way, West Valley won the sub-district tournament advancing to district, including 6 firsts, 1 second, 3 thirds, and 1 fourth. Two boys advanced to the state meet from district with 1 first, 1 second, 4 third and 2 fourths. These 8 places were 1 more than any ofthe 13 schools participating, earning third place. A fairly small but dedicated crop of sophomores joined a capable nucleus ofjuniors and seniors to make up this yearls B-squad. Their primary job has been to learn to wrestle-they have done well. Their secondaryjob has been to offer opposition for the more able varsity teammates and they have done equally well in that category. These are the men who will be the future Eagle varsity wrestlers.
