X Tightening Up The Routine Cartwheels, flips, and back walkovers were the order of the day, every day of the season, as West Valley's gymnasts compiled routines for the uneven bars, the beam, and the floor exercises. The 12 girls on the gym- nastics team competed in local and regional meets and seven went with Coach Luanne Sweet to the State Meet where they captured 8th place as a team, with Donna Neidhold taking first in floor exercises. . . . the Regional Championship! Teamwork combined with a maximum output of ef- fort made the West Valley Varsity Girls basketball team, the 1977-78 Regional Champions!! As Coach Don Klepper described it, it was the Cinderella story of the year. After losing the first five games of the season, the outlook for our place in the final standings was indeed grim. Being yound and small in number, the team faced many potential problems: but, dedicated and hardworking, they did not let mi- nor distractions distress them. vs Sr SQQXO 4196, The ten girls remaining at the end of the season were extremely well-rewarded when they topped archrival Lathrop for the Region VI title, 48-43! Special congratulations to the three girls from West who made the All-Tournament team: Melissa Benson, Micky Schruf and Jessica Gavora! ln addition, Micky Schruf was the only Junior named to the Region Vl team, and the first girl from West Valley to be chosen for the All-State team!!
