West Lathrop was a start. For the first time the Falr- banks school system was forced to conform to theg needs of the community. Thus, Austin E. Lathrop High School was split into two schools but housed in one building. jLathrop became East and West and students were designated to a school by location. Soon after the first year started a mild hostility flared up and an East High student became an Eastie and a snob while West students were definitely the best! By the second year at West High half the student body was again ripped away to be boarded in the Main, building on Cushman Street where they became North Poli High. By and by West students came to love their s hool. North Pole was okay for they had once been West, but still felt a bit of contempt for East. The spirit of Eur great school was growing as was ,the population and Wet was be- coming the school to go to. 1 West Lathrop then underwent a sudden change. After just two short years as West Lathrop we were to become West Valley. There were many that hated this name and even the '76 grads demanded West Lathrop on their diplomas. The Juniors fought it out for West Lathrop on their rings but to no avail: West Valley was the name and West Valley was to be implanted on the band. Throughout time the name became more acceptable and we became known as West Valley High, home of the West Valley Wolf- pack and would be for many years to come. 1 , A Behmd the Blackest Cloud i 7 ' an ,T ,Q I . naw' A Q 4 ? r Www 'vm' M. sf U-Xl' 5' , W 1 ' 'V 5 '. , B .. fu ,QE 'Y' f , f y . Since Alaska is unique in the fact that the people who have made their home here are from many places all over the world, we decided that this feature would be altogether interesting and entertaining. We don't look upon these people as foreigners , we look upon them as people who have come together as a unit to give of themselves Each of them is an individual with different ideas Without each of these different personalities and traditions West Valley wouldn't be West Valley O . These are the folks who, down the line, are people with their own personal adventures and tales to share--they are those beings who, through time, will look upon high school as a step- ping stone to living . . . Our average West Valley day consists of making it to class on time--before the tone tones! Each tone signals some sort of dismissal or attention. . .throughout the hall, total chaos reigns and the situation is each soul for their own hide. Finally, after numerous tones, numbers of 50 minute classes and a sparing bite to eat, the last tone does its bit and chaos is at its height. Life at West Valley consists of ac- tivities varying from the drudgery of everyday hall madness to a delightful pep assembly in the commons and on to a lecturer or even a play. This is all in addition to one's typical day at SCHOOL West Valley students were lucky enough this year to oe offered numerous lecturers from alcholism to YOU and YOUR A.C.T., and a variety of other special educational pastimes. Films were shown, models glued, and various bits of life dissected and viewed . All in all, the classroom scene at West Valley offered new learning channels for all concerned and opened many doors . Through these varied visi- tors and teaching methods, the light bulbs lit up, never to fade. The dance, which purpose is to welcome back seniors of the year gone by, was a tre- mendous success, especially considering the many ob- stacles that blocked the way of progress . One obstruction was the late start in school which made it difficult to create the plans for the homecoming weekend . Yet all in all the dance was a welcome success with Ann DeVries as reigning Queen and football player Don lVIcCumby as crowned King . The next day Homecom- ing's success was made cer- tain when our Wolfpack foot- ball team beat out the North Pole Patriots for the 3rd victory of the season . .There were beautiful floats which were made by three classes plus a choir special. Making Ourselves at Home . West Lathrop was born in orc er to provide an educational and learning center for what was considered the overflow of high school stu- dents. From it grew what we have today, WEST VALLEY. At the beginning of the year the school was in turmoil and total chaos . By the beginning of the second Quarter however, the roots had been planted. Loyalties began to spread and the building reached for completion. November 15 was the momentous day when the remaining wing opened . No longer would the band, choir, and orchestra be forced to bus up the hill to the University, no longer would it be necessary for classes to be overgrown with bodies because shop classes and music courses reguired space too. Although the gym was not completed by that time, it reached completion in time to sponsor the Wolfpack's first game . Finally the library was opened--research papers began and, in general, life began to settle into the West Valley soil and foundation - ,!JH,,.- Md,,,,,. W X The day of Halloween activities started with many screams and groans-- that is, screams of laughter and groans of good natured fun. As the day progres- sed costumes were observed and judged by teachers and administrators as the weirdos, Ragady Ann and Andys, and various other things circled about them . Out of all the imaginative costumes which evolved from the brilliance of many West students' minds, lVlorten Christensen ho-ho-hoed to lst place as the Jolly Green Giant. With the Freshmen flying off with lst prize in hall decorating, the Seniors had to be satisfied with second. All the halls were decorated by each class pro- ducing a more Halloween mood through- out the day . During lunch periods a sponge throw was the main attraction as administrators and teachers were left at the mercy of students armed with wet sponges . X 5' 15 ,046 JY Hey, I'm older than you. Christmas week this year provided a week of festivities to break the routine of the average school day. Each of the classes decked the halls with lots of colors, fa la Ia la la, la la la la, together with the Art Classes' Jeautiful decorations in the commons area, it indeed looked as though Christmas never had such a decorative greeting . Included in the agenda of the week was an Open House held for the general public, a concert which the Wolfpack Band and Choir presented to the student body, and the annual student verses faculty basketball game, which the teachers--with the officials' help, of course--won, With people roaming through decorated halls and listening to good music, as well as wearing red and green, it was a Christmas to be remembered . Q Who Says There 's wacomqo West Gym Completed. . .Finally Accompanying the opening of West Valley, came the opening of two very important assets: the library and the gym. The library opened with the only book detection system in the local schools, and 2700 ofthe 6000 volumes ordered. The gym opened as a Christmas surprise to the students, in just enough time before Christmas to host the first basketball game on our new home court! West Library Opens. Iwish we got this magazi Gee, I don't know! Vartety West Valley Needless to say, as soon as the gym and library were open, student organizer, Lance Gilmer, succeeded in putting together a very successful Open House. lt was held on lVlon- day, December 13, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Refreshments were served, the Concert Choir entertained people in the cafeteria, and the public left with an excellent overall impres- sion of West Valley . With the coming of school being delayed by two weeks , there was an immediate need to make-up these lost days . In the process of trying to find the right plan of action in which to complete a school year, many schemes were thought of. One was to start school earlier in the mornings and another was simply to add the two weeks missed to the end of the year. The end result of this mish-mash of ideas brought about school on Saturday. This meant that one of the beloved days of rest and relaxation was brutally taken up by school once a month, beginning with November. The complaints were that working students could not work and skiers could not ski and on and on. Saturdays proved to be a day of make-up for some and relaxation for others . West Opens Its Doors. Fairbanks schools have been associated with Proj- ect NOW forthe past few years . The program offers an additional educational oppor- tunity for area high school natives. Such courses as art, photography, Native Culture, T.V. Production, Land Claims, and Journalism, are choice offerings for any na- tive high school student to take advantage of after one's normal school routine. ln addition to these extra classes they are able to participate in, the interested students have the oppor- tunity to travel and learn a bit more about this fair state. Thus far this year, the group has reached Anchorage where they attended the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention, Barrow for the Iditarod Races: and finally Juneau, the capital, where they were able to observe the legislative session being held. Through this travel- ing throughout Alaska, Alaskan natives have a chance to learn about their heritage and culture in a comfortable in class and on the scene atmosphere. Leo and His Big Mac Attack! Leonard Neidhold was chosen to be a member of the 1976 lVlcDonald's All Ameri- can High School Band. He is among 102 of the nation's top high school musicians--two from each state and the Dis- trict of Columbia --who are selected each year to participate in the band sponsored by lVlcDonalds family res- taurants . Leo toured the East coast, with his big event being the Thanks- giving lVIacy's Parade. After a brief Christ- mas, Leo then flew to California where he re- met all his band cohorts There he played in the famed Tournament of Roses Parade held in Pasadena on New Year's Day. While in California, Leo visited Uni- versal Studios, took part in a special Rose Parade Preview Show on NBC, and performed in special pa- rades and concerts at Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm . 1 'P if E Leo receiving an official Tournament of Roses Welcome from Trisha Kinne Hendershott, the 1975 Princess, and band director Paul LaValle. we ALD'S ALLAM HIGH Slglgl S . The gentlemen had their sessions at the University of Alaska while the young ladies traveled to Anchorage for their lessons. For seven very memorable days each group lived through a rigid schedule of work- shops, lectures, and what-not. During this time they learn alot, had a little fun, and remembered it all. West Valley is proud to state that out of all 80 boys state attenders, Drake Selmer, was elected as Lt. Governor, which is the 2nd highest office available in the mock government construction by the students. All in all it proved to be a very enjoyable and enlightening experience. Keyhearts Cherish Forever On the night of December 18, the first dance was hosted by the West Valley Key Club. This gig is an annual tradition which this association has put on for the purpose of announcing the new Key Hearts. Key Hearts, being the only female members of the club, are specially picked from each of the four classes with the Senior Key Heart as Queen . With a drum roll from the band, A Shot In The Dark , Ed Randolph, as Presi- dent of the club, announced the nominees from each class, presenting them with carnations and roses, for the new Key Hearts. Jody Vignola was presented as the Queen Key Heart, with Dottie Johnson, as the Junior Key Heart, lVlary Bezona, as the Sophomore Key Heart, and Karen Tyson, as the Freshman Key Heart. The new Key Hearts will indeed Cherish Forever this memory. These parties were held after hours at the U . of A's pool from 10:00 pm . to midnite . After a vigorous swim and a soothing sauna, a quick brunch of cheese and crackers awaited seniors and guests in the Nanook Lounge. Attendance was always high which always helped with the suc- cess ofthe big event. ,Html ' f 'f4,g..,,:: The first dance of the year was held by the Senior class on January 8th, The theme was Beginnings and was held in honor of the new arrivals in the school called Freshman. Normally this dance would have been held at the begin- ning of school except some minor problems re- garding the building completion delayed this . Although it was halfway into the school year, many Freshmen failed to attend because of the terrifying fear of being initiated by the Almighty Seniors. Thus, even with West Lathrop gradu- ate, Jeff Tyson, as disc jockey, attendance was lacking. N 1 West Has Spirit in '77! Spirit '77 was definitely the topic at the pep assembly on February lst. All the athletic teams were introduced and such spe- cialties as Coach DeLeon, a la cake mix, or a delicacy of lVlr. Schellinger, topped with eggs and flour were a sight to see . Hockey coach, IVlarlo IVlilIer, had an added touch as the hockey players chipped in the funds to provide a few extra additives and preservatives. In addition to all of this battering, there were two tug- of-wars, the cheerleaders out-tugged the matmaids, as did the football players in their tug against the wrestlers . The pep assembly proved to be a success and it be- came evident that West Valle Hi h Schoolers are f I , , ' . we s N y g u I of spirit and pep! If your parents' old clothes have been packed away all these years, Tuesday, February 8 would have been the day to drag out the boxes and put them to use . Greasy hair, leather jackets, red lips, and bobby socks were not an unusual sight! For those of you who missed Fifties Day, it was a big success! After Paul Brown and Lynda Foster's costumes were chosen as the best, student council sponsored an in-school dance and dance contest. Fifties and seventies music were divided up equally, with Porcia Fenton and Ray Wheat carrying off the honor of best dancers . It was a day that not too many will for- get, and will look forward to it again next year! O .. X Q XX ,N up ff' x I AABOVE, Tark twists the night away at the hop.
