To Students, Faculty, Friends, and Patrons of Le Mirage: This edition of Le Mirage represents our first effort to resume pre- war standards for this publication. As in all other post-war enterprises the task has been difficult. Our editors and sponsor deserve great credit for the success achieved. No doubt the book reflects the year at West Texas State with no little fidelity. If so, each of you will doubtless cher- ish it more and more through the passing years. Personally and officially I wish to record here my very deep ap- preciation of every honest, intelligent, and unselfish effort that has been made this year toward the improvement of West Texas State. Colleges are built and maintained for the primary purpose of lifting the cultural level of those who attend them and thus improving the democratic heritage handed down to us by our fathers. Let us hope that our own beloved institution has not this year betrayed its trust and that by reason of her service each of us, through the years ahead, will grow in appreciation of the knowledge, the experience, and the inspira- tion that have been ours in 1946-47.
