RICHARDS Gfass Jfisioru In September of 1951, a crew of 87 boys and 67 girls set sail on a four years cruise on the Steamship West Street High. These boys and girls awkwardly came up the gangplank and entered the ship as apprentice seamen under the supervision of Captains J. C. Hobbs, Edward Bell, S. E. Coates and J.W. McLaughlin. Thirteen boys became landlovers long enough to participate with the port ' s pride and joy—the football team. They were shipmates Jesse Carter, James Midgette, Casper Carter, Nathaniel Harvey, Clyd- Moore, William Staten and George Carter. To support the team, Josephine Stancil, Edna Simmons, Plump Hill and Shirley Bryant became cheer¬ leaders. Eleanor Bell joined the Glee Club; while Gwendolyn Gavin, Delia Green, Mary Nixon, Edna Simmons, Lena Kirkman, Geraldine Randolph, Ruby Slade, Plump Hill, Jean Williams, Eleanor Bell, Vera Richard son, Josephine Stancil and Shirley Bryant became members of the N.H. A. Members of the class who made the Tri-Hi-Y were Joan Harris, Lena Kirkman, Ruby Slade, Geraldine Randolph, and Harriette Henry; and those who became members of the band were Chester Rodgers, Simuel Whitfield, Leon Nixon, William Staten, Vander Allen and William Pearsall. Helen Brown, Vander Allen, Ernest Fisher, Shirley Bryant and Plump Hill were representatives of the Student Council; while Vander Allen, Joseph Williams, Billy Dove, Ernest Fisher, and Donald Pollock joined the senior scouts. Jesse Carter, Oscar Keyes, Carl Collins, Charles Dillahunt and Billy Dove participated in boys ' basketball. Final examinations ended the first year of our voyage. In September of 1952, 59 boys and 58 girls cruised into dock as sophomores. For this, our second year ' s cruise, were Captains J. C. Hobbs, S. E. Coates, and P. O. Richards. Joan Sanders, Gwendolyn Gavin, Josephine Stancil and Eleanor Bell became members of the Tri-Hi-Y; while Chester Rodgers, Vander Allen, Simuel Whitfield, Joseph Williams, William Pearsall and Leon Nixon became members of the Hi-Y. Allegray Reddick became a member of the basketball team. Joan Sanders, Allegray Reddick, Maggie Roberson, Ludie Fisher and Hattie Kornegay increased the roll of the N.H. A. The shipmates with musical talent joined the Glee Club--Plump Hill, Annie Gray, Allegray Reddick, Ruby Slade, Lena Kirkman, Mary Dawson and Vera Richardson. Joining the band were Thomas Brown, Vander Allen, Edna Vines, Gwendolyn Gavin, Shirley Bryant, and Doris Gibbs. Joan Harris was a majorette. Representatives of the Student Council were Joan Harris, Geraldine Randolph, and Joseph Williams; while Thomas Brown, Shirley Bryant, Vander Allen, and Ernest Fisher became members of the Science Seminar. The third year of our voyage, 1953, began with Captains G. C. Fields, J. C. Hobbs, and P. O. Richards at the helm. The energetic crew organized as follows: Thomas Brown, President; Melton Tripp, Vice President; Ruby Slade, Secretary; Gwendolyn Gavin, Assistant Secretary; Shirley Bryant, Treasurer; Joseph Williams, Business Manager; and Esther Edwards, Reporter. Two newly organized clubs were F. T. A. and F. N.A. Such voices as Joseph Williams, Walter Batts, Billy Dove, William Pearsall, Vander Allen and Simuel Whitfield were heard in the Boys ' Glee Club; while Vera Best became a member of the Glee Club. The Junior-Senior Prom was a highlight of our third year. It was a Hawaiian Cruise. This night will linger with every member of the ship for many years to come. The Physics Club accepted Essie Blount, Vander Allen, Eleanor Bell, Thomas Brown, Oscar Keyes, Gwendolyn Gavin, Geraldine Randolph, Edna Vines, and Joseph Williams. In 1954, after pulling our anchors from the deep waters, we set sail on the fourth and last year of our voyage. At the helm were Captains J. C. Hobbs and P. O. Richards with a crew of 69.
