JENKINS Advisor You may not find the events here recorded in the pages of American history, but I defy anyone to prove that they are not so worthy of mention as any of the deeds performed by heroes whose names are painted in flaming letters in those same national eulogies. Would you have me prove my words? Then turn an attentive ear to what I have to say. Four years ago on a certain September morning a momentous event took place. A new class was born -- the class of 1953. 133 boys and girls were observed sneaking in the direction of West Street High School. Coy looks characterized the girls and awkward feet, the boys on this day which was their first day as freshmen. During this year of 1949-50, the seventy-two boys and sixty-one girls of this class, under their capable advisors, Miss E. L. Nixon, Mrs. P. O. Richards, Mr. E. N. Bell, Mr. A. L. Robinson and Mr. J. W. McLaughlin fell into the full swing of high school life by participating in various activities. Willie Bryant, Marguerite Woods, Charles Bell, Robert Bryant and Daniel Clark were chosen as representatives of the Student Council. With football being the high-light of the fall season, Kelly Henderson, Thomas Wooten, William Jones, Wilbur Herring and Charles Hargett helped to bring many victories to the team. Those having musical talent, namely: Sarah Spivey, Hubert Rouse and John Shepard, joined the Glee Club. Several members with dramatic ability were: Joan Brown, Orpha Cooke, Jeanne O ' Hara, Lena Rhodes, Charles Bell and Eleanor Hyman. Participating on the paper staff were: Eleanor Hyman, Herbert Fisher, Harriett Midgette, Marguerite Woods, Clarence Foye, Charles Bell and Julius Stanley. Members of the NHA were Laura King, Mary Stewart, Odessa Badger, Jeanne O ' Hara, Miriam Fisher and Henrietta Henry.-Thus our Freshman year ended. A new year had now begun heralding the return of ninety-eight sophisticated sophomores. Joan Brown and Evelyn Hill became members of the Annual Staff and Orpha Cooke and Julius Stanley of the Paper Staff. Participating in the Glee Club were: Odessa Badger, Sylvia Dunson, Marjorie Guion, Gracie Koonce, Ernell Tripp, Charles Bell, Robert Bryant, Daniel Clark, Dennis Edwards and Julius Stanley, Representatives of the Student Council were: Eleanor Hyman, Lena Rhodes, Marguerite Woods, Maceo Bragg, Charles Bell, Daniel Clark, Herbert Fisher and Alex Wallace. Our most dramatic students, Joan Brown, Orpha Cooke, Eleanor Hyman, Charles Bell, William Ryder, and Julius Stanley, became members of the Drama Guild. Members of the Hi-Y were: William Ryder, James Gavins, Alex Wallace, Benjamin Woods, Julius Stanley and Herbert Fisher. Tri-Hi-Y members were: Willie Bryant, Joan Martin, Laura King, Harriett Midgette, Mary Stewart and Eleanor Hyman. Members of the NHA were: Mary Stewart, Joan Brown, Sondra George, Willie Bryant, Jeanne O ' Hara, Eleanor Hyman, Henrietta Henry and Marjorie Davis. We were efficiently guided through our sophomore year with Mrs. P. O. Richards, Mrs. L. B. Smith and Mr. G. C. Fields as our advisors. On September 7, 1951, we started the 1951-52 term with eighty-six juniors returning. Mrs. J. W. Jones and Mrs. E. N. Fenner were our advisors. As usual, football was the highlight of the season with many juniors participating. They were: Charles Bell, Daniel Clark, Robert Bryant, Melvin Perry, Kelly Henderson, Thomas Wooten, Alex Wallace, William Perry, Alton Cogdell, William Jones and John Whitfield. When basketball rolled around, the juniors were very proud of their junior members: Harriett Midgette, Martha Dillahunt and Laura King. The Drama Guild had as active members a number of Juniors, namely: Sondra George, Eleanor Hyman, Joan Brown, Orpha Cooke, Julius Stanley, Maceo Bragg, Amos Nixon and William Perry. To the Crown and Scepter, Herbert Fisher, Melvin Odum, Harriett Midgette, Willie Bryant, Clarence Foye, Jeanne O ' Hara, Margie Davis and James Gavins were admitted. Preparations for the Junior-Senior Prom highlighted the later activities of the Juniors. This, to us was the greatest event of the year. Although a large task (but, with the cooperation of all. we succeeded in giving the best) this prom will always be remembered as The Prom of 52 , the best in the history of West Street High. Many Juniors participated in the band under the direction of Mr. W. M. Reid. They were: Laura King, Henrietta Henry, Orpha Cooke, James Gavins, Benjamin Woods, Harriett Midgette, Marguerite Woods, Margie Davis and William Ryder. To the Glee Club were added: Lena Rhodes, Jeanne O’Hara, William Perry, and Willie Bryant. Thus, we ended this year with many happy events to be remembered. After completing three eventful years of our high school career, we have reached the final year--a year we have awaited with eagerness. Having as our advisors, Mrs. J. W. Jones and Mrs. D. P. Jenkins, the seventy-one members have gotten off to a good start with an efficient group of officers: Clarence Foye, President, William Ryder, Vice President, Willie Bryant, Secretary, and Herbert Fisher, Treasurer. After completely integrating ourselves into the West Street family we continue our interest in extra curricular activities: The Crown and Scepter added Eleanor Hyman, Bessie Montgomery, and Orpha Cooke. Kelly Henderson and Thomas Wooten were accepted in the Hi-Y. The Student Council elected Benjamin Woods as President, Clarence Foye, Vice President, Harriett Midgette, Secretary, and Herbert Fisher, Treasurer, and Sarah Spivey, Reporter. School Publications have as Editors-in-Chief, William Jones of the Annual Staff and James Gavins of the Newspaper Staff. Marguerite Woods is Secretary of the News¬ paper Staff. The Glee Club received Daisy West, Alice White, Marjorie Jones, Eleanor Hyman, and Bessie Montgomery. We can never forget the greatest event of the year, when our seniors, as members of the Warriors , contributed greatly during our football season in the attempt to win the Championship. This was the greatest event in West Street ' s history since 38. Outstanding players were: Melvin Perry, William Jones, Robert Bryant, Daniel Clark, Alton Cogdell, John Whitfield, Kelly Henderson, William Perry and Thomas Wooten. YEAR YE! On this day and year of our Lord, June 4, 1953, ye are gathered here to hearken to the prophecies of the Senior Class of West Street High School. With your earnest attention, we will without further ado proceed to do the same. All who are concerned with Rockefeller Center will be happy to know of the great honor which will be bestowed upon them when Dr. Robert Bryant, noted physician and general practitioner, opens offices there. The lights on Broadway will flash and flitter with the announcement of the appearance of the most famous Windwood Quartet in two centuries: The Gavins Windwood Quartet conducted by the renowned James Gavins. Washington ' s political circles beware! In a few years you will be split asunder by the appearance of Honorable Raleigh Sykes, who will cast in obscurity you politicians who are in the limelight now. So take care. We are not hastening anyone ' s demise, but in the event of that unavoidable occurance we are glad to recommend to you those distinctive funeral homes: Wallace ' s Funeral Home conducted by Alex Wallace in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Simmons ' Funeral Home in New Bern, North Carolina, conduct¬ ed by James Simmons, and The Bragg ' s Funeral Home in Lansing, Michigan conducted by Maceo Bragg. It has been known for some time that there is a shortage of teachers, but the shortage will be sup¬ plemented by the addition of Odessa Badger at West Street School and Ernestine Keyes at Ernul Elemen¬ tary School. The colleges will also come into their share of teachers. At Temple University, Miss Joan Brown will make a pleasant addition to the faculty; Tuskegee will soon have the opportunity of welcoming Miss Eleanor Hyman to their faculty; and in the library of New York University Miss Orpha Cooke will be found (overseeing the books and making sure that the Dewey Decimal System is carried out properly) in the capacity of librarian. The whole human race will be benefited by the career of Miss Margaret Hopkins, beautician. Her motto is If you are ugly, I will make you pretty; if you are pretty, I will make you prettier. Durham! Get ready for some home demonstrating. Miss Alice White will arrive in that capacity very shortly. A new White House for the next president of the United States will be erected in the near future, in time for inauguration. The chief architect in this momentous undertaking will be Mr. Clarence Foye of Foye Architectural Company, Washington, D. C. When the next census of the nation is taken, we will find as chief statistician in the Bureau of Census the notable Mr. Daniel Clark. In the WAF a new uniform will soon be issued to Miss Helena Harris who soon will make the jump from private first class to lieutenant. In Boston, Massachusetts, Willie Dixon will soon be the key figure in the business world. He will have his choice of pretty and competent stenographers from a select number including such well known graduates of West Street High School as: Helen Midgette, Carrie Montague, Mildred Fenner, Daisy West, Ernell Tripp, Ella Sykes, Mary Stewart, Bessie Montgomery, Marjorie Jones and Willie Bryant. New Bern! Prepare to meet some celebrities. After an extensive tour of the world. Mars, Venus and parts of the moon, William Ryder, Alberta Reddick and Ester Griffin will settle down to conclude their life at West Street High School. We are sure that all the future sick people will be gratified to hear that the nursing profession will be enlarged by the addition of Margie Davis, Carrie Simmons, Bertha Styron, Harriett Midgette, Dorothy Thomas, Pattie Dillahunt and Sarah Spivey. Supervising these nurses will be Miss Henrietta Henry, who has had extensive and varied experiences in Raleigh, North Carolina. It is certain that the physical education departments of various colleges in the United States will be much improved by such enthusiastic and energetic directors as: Alton Cogdell at Topeka Kansas College, Melvin Perry at West Virginia State College, Thomas Wooten at North Carolina College at Durham, Amos Nixon and William Jones at Columbia in New York. In Paris, France a successor to Rembrant will soon be strolling along the boulevards and avenues in the person of Charles Nixon, aspiring artist and painter. Also in Paris on the Champ Ellysees, in the shop windows some dresses designed by Mademoiselle Laura King will be shown. But to make these dresses, an expert dressmaker will be needed, and this need will be supplied by Sondra George, competent dressmaker, who before coming to Paris made dress¬ es for such movie stars as Lena Horne and Dorothy Dandridge. We are sure that the future presidents of the United States will enjoy wearing the suits made by that tailor on 44th Street, Miss Lena Rhodes. There will be two contenders for the position held by Mr. Hayes as Industrial Arts teacher at West Street High School. The contenders will be Arthur Sykes and Kelly Henderson. May the better man win. Einstein, beware! Remember the saying: Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think. Well, you will know so when Benjamin Woods and John Whitfield crash Washington with new formulas and new methods of doing algebra and geometry. You people who are in the habit of blowing fuses will be delighted to know that another electrician will be available. Yes, call anytime, day or night, for Mr. William Beatty and in a jiffy you will be transformed from darkness to light due to his competence and know-how. Soon on Broadway a new personality will be noted. He is Mr. Julius Stanley, dramatic actor of the highest caliber. New Bern will have the opportunity to welcome a psychologist by the name of Jeanne O ' Hara. Miss O ' Hara will psychoanalyze anybody or anything and rates will be reasonable. If in the future anyone will be in the need of a lawyer, there will be several available, all of whom will be relied upon for eloquent oratory. They are: William Perry and Charles Bell. Well, finally, West Street High School will have a commercial business teacher. Yes, Miss Grace Avery and her collegue. Miss Martha Dillahunt, will arrive at West Street to instruct those interested in business education. A social science teacher and history teacher will soon be at West Street. They are Mr. Herbert Fisher and Mr. Jerry Daniels. All who are planning to build homes or offices, will please get in contact with Mr. Dallas Webb and Mr. Miles Simmons of Webb and Simmons Brickmason Company. If in the next ten years. Good Shepherd Hospital is in need of a dietition, we are happy to announce that Miss Rebecca Blake will serve in that capacity. We are sure that all the new and complicated mechanism that are soon to be invented will be no mystery for Mr. Charlie Simmons who is an excellent machinery worker. We are sure that there are no air force engineers who can measure up to our own Charles Foye who will excel in that position before very long. Ye have heard the prophecies and we are sure that everyone is in agreement with us when we say: That nowhere else could you find a more variety of careers or a finer class of people to fill them. THE PLANET October 1952 Vol. V—No. 1 Warriors Brighten Championship Hopes WEST STREET VICTORIOUS GALA HOMECOMING IN THREE GAMES ! PLANNED Hl-Y CLUB MAKES PLANS TO ATTEND STATE REPRESENTATIVES ELECTED FOR SCHOOL The West Street Warriors opened its season campaign by defeating the Jacksonville eleven, 31-0 at Kafer ' s Park. The whole team played an im¬ pressive game with much spir¬ it and drive. The backfields ' play was sparked by William Duke Jones, Smith Scott, Thomas Wooten, James Mid- gette. Robert Bryant and Dan¬ iel Clark. The first TD came on a beautiful pass play from AvAidqette to Melvin Perry. The backfield showed midseason form by making several long runs and many first downs. The strong offensive line was ■ composed of Robert Simmons, Peter Hargett, Vernon Hatch, George Dudley, J. B. Carter, end Melvin Perry. The second victim of the Warriors was Mary Potter ' s Institute of Oxford. The War- | riors rolled over the Oxford | squad by a score of 27-0. New Bern at the half led by a score of 6-0, but it was the brilliant I offensive and defensive skill which enabled the warriors to I score a lopsided victory. The third game was against a tough Greenville team in which the West Street eleven won by a narrow 12-2 score. The Warriors made a touch¬ down on the first ploy on a | long pass from Scott to Hatch | covering 83 yards. Both teams played a well fought contest, j but the Warriors slightly out- [ classed the Greenies ' It was j the spectacular run of Duke Jones, who made the deciding touchdown in the fourth quar¬ ter. The coaches, Mr. Coates and Mr. Field were very much impressed by the splendid play (Continued ' on page 4) faculty and students of Street school.
