Each age is a dream that is dying, or one that ie coming to birth —George MacDonald We, the class of 50, have passed through the following ages: Chapter I - The Age of Ignorance In September, 19 6, we, one hundred thirty-one meek, but blissful, young boys and girls, took our places in the rooms of Mrs. M. B. Danyus, Mrs. A. B. Mizell, and Mr. E. N. Bell This was Hlg£i School, the goal at which our dreams and ambitions had been aimed during the eight years of study and fundamental preparation. How green we were during this first age 1 Since all fresh¬ men were expected to be ignorant, we were not worried over this fact, but instead, we put our confidence in our instructors, who helped us rise from the class of the ignorant, the green, and the insignificant. Before the end of the first semester, we launched out to become a part of many of the extra-curricular activities of the school. Henry Crooms and William Hyman became football heroes. Lois Howard, Alberta White, and Carl Crump were our representa¬ tives in the Glee Club. Allen Dudley and Carrie Mae Harrison were members of the N.H.A., one of the most pro gressive school organizations at that time Honor during the year went to Georgianna Bryan, who was crowned Miss West Street. Chapter II - The Age of Confidence Entering our second year of high school, we had an entire¬ ly different perception of school life. It seemed as though a new era was creeping upon us We were fortunate in having as our advisors, Mrs. M. B. Bembry, Mrs. L. B. Smith, and Mr. F.W. Baker. It was their enduring patience that caused us to main¬ tain our confidence. The members of the class continued to show traits of un¬ usual ability in various fields. Mary Strayhorne, Oreatha Simmons, Julia DillahuAt, and Ella Fulton made stellar contri¬ butions to the basketball team. Lawrence Suggs was added to the list of football heroes. Halice Kinsey and Georgianna Bryan beoame affiliated with the N.H.A. In muelc, Preston Hill, Thomas Rlohardeon, and Luth.r Hatch In - 2 - creased the representation of the class in the Glee Club. We were well represented in the Student Council by Burnette Martin, Jeesie Harvey, Preston Hill, and James Johnson. In Dramatics, Elaine Nixon and Preston Hill played leading roles in the high school play, Silas Mamer.” The honor rolls showed that mem bers of the class were not only active in extra-curricular activities, but in their scholastic endeavors as well With the coming of spring, which reminded us that we would soon be entering our third age, we closed the activities of our Sopho¬ more year and passed on to more pleasant dreams. Chapter III - The Age of Sophistication Full of school spirit, we were now Juniors, Sophisticated Juniors. The gaining of this title caused our sense of impor¬ tance to increase our of all due proportion. Our class organ¬ ization was noteworthy with Solomon Crooms as president. With the leadership of our able advisors, Mrs. J. W. Jones and Mr. W. M. Booker, we were destined to do great things Continuing to exhibit their talent in the field of Dramat¬ ics were Elain Nixon and Preston Hill. Added to these great Thespians were Evelyn Knight and Burnette Martin. We were proud of Burnette Martin, who played the leading role in the stirring one-act play, The Monkey ' s Paw, which was presented at the Dramatic Tournament held in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Preston Hill, vice-president of the class, represented the school at the Hi-Y Conference in Wilmington, North Carolina and also received first prize in the annual New Bern district Talent Hunt sponsored by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Solomon Crooms won second prize in the local Oratorical Contest spon¬ sored by the Elks Lodge. Another honor was brought to our class when Luther Hatch was awarded the prize.offered by The Brick and Tile Service of Statesville, North Carolina, to the student who makes the most progress in bricklaying. One of our most pleasant memories during this year was the Juni 01 -Senior Prom. We were given credit as having had the most spectacular and memorable event in the history of West Street High. Proud of the activities of our Junior year, we began to look forward to our cherished goal—seniority. Chapter IV - The Age of Dignity After having passed successfully through the trials and tribulations of f our f freshen, o.ore,.andj nior ges, - dignlfied r senlor8. This y« r n ® B a Jg n n y a Sefltted S and t ° r ou; flret meeting°elected the following class officers: Solomon - 3 - Croom8, President; Preston Hill, Vice-President; Jessie Harvey, Secretary; Millioent Bryant, Assistant Secretary; Isabell Rhodes, Financial Secretary; Halice Kinsey, Treasurer; and William Hyman, Business Manager. Our advisors were Mrs. B. L. Rivers and Mr. W. M. Booker. William Hyman beoame president of the Student Council, and James Daniels, Editor-in-Chief of the Planet and Annual. Our authority was also extended to the French Club and the Tri-Hi-Y Club with Elaine Nixon as president of both organizations. Upholding the seniors and bringing many victories on the football field were Solomon Crooms, Henry Crooms, Vernon Taylor, William Hyman, Alva Moore, Walter Williams, Sylvester Mldgette, James Murrell, and John Martin. Our representatives in the Band were Preston Hill, William Hyman, Thomas Richardson, and Lawrence Suggs. As in previous years, were represented in the N.H.A., Glee Club, and Dramatic Guild. It gives us a feeling of sadness to know that we must part, but we realize that we shall take our places in the march of human progress. Our contribution must be nothing less than the best of which we are capable.
