THE ANNUAL STAFF OF WEST STANLY HIGH SCHOOL OAKBORO, NORTH CAROLINA PRESENTS 1965 Foreword OH, THE GLORY THAT WAS GREECE, the grandeur that was Rome . . . the fun that was West ! During this our third year, we have seen West extend into new horizons. We have broaden- ed ourselves in the fields of education, athletics and activities. One step at a time, but always forward, we are making West the best. The doors to the annual room have been continuously opening and closing. These past months have been filled with many hours of work--chasing students and faculty members to have their pictures made, and hurrying to meet deadlines. All of this work- -including loss of tempers, good grades, friends, and sleep--produces your yearbook. The PEGASUS ' staff has endeavored to record the visual events, but only our hearts can hold the true experiences. We now present to you your PEGASUS for 1965 in the hope that it will be the medium between the actual events and your fondest memories. 2 “One Step at a Time, CONTENTS Foreword 2 Dedication 12 ADMINISTRATION 13 Faculty 15 Seniors 18 Juniors 34 Sophomores 40 Freshmen 47 FEATURES 53 Homecoming Court 54 Marshals 60 ACTIVITIES 61 Athletics 62 Organizations 71 EPILOGUE 89 4 But Always Forward. ” v 4M Whether it is a running step of the football team, a fast gait of a baseball player, the saun- ter of a couple, the stroll of friends, the new dance steps at an informal party, or the brisk stride of students going to classes makes no dif- ference. These are forward steps. Little by lit- tle, day by day, and step by step; we are push- ing West forward. By doing so, we increase our own capacity to learn, to do, and to understand. We can never loiter and watch the world go by, for the spirit of West Stanly High says, Forward, forward, one step at a time, but always forward. 5 The bell rings and homeroom period is over. Doors are thrown open and students rush into the hall from all directions. Our future track stars exercise everyday by run- ning the three-minute mile from Mr. Henkel ' s homeroom to the mobile unit. However, some students find it hard to walk from room 210 to room 209 in the allotted three minutes. The slamming of locker doors, the clicking of heels, and the chat- ter of friends slowly fade away as first period classes begin. From the confusion of the halls ' knowledge com es. but m to the order of the classroom 7 Physical education develops students both physically and emotionally as they play together. Through the health and physical fitness courses, adolescents learn to cope with their problems of maturing. They gain coordi- nation through exercises and planned games. Mrs. Morton, Mr. Hinson, Mr. Caudle, and Mr. Rogers instruct the P. E. classes (as they are called). On Fridays they become dance instructors” as the classes square dance and do various popular dances. Varied curriculum meets Fragrant aromas from the home economics classrooms, the sound of drills and saws from the shop, the French class, and the confusion in the office every morning as students present notes and get excuses--these are vital parts of the life at West, Students are prepared for the future in either voca- tional courses or college preparatory courses. For students planning on work immediately after high school, there are courses in home economics, agriculture, industrial arts, drafting, and the com- mercial field. Special courses in cosmetology and bricklaying prepare students in these areas. Courses at West are as varied as the seven hun- dred and fifty students taking them. the needs of students Students exemplify team spirit Whether it is a Beta initiation or an incomplete pass, everything at West is exciting. Students always seem to work together, play together, and even laugh together. Our football team improves each year, the basketball teams play harder and score higher and higher, and the baseball team works diligently for that no loss season. Everyone ' s goal is a Rocky River Conference Champ- ionship. Although the cheerleaders sometimes yell Stop that line! when the Colts have the ball and Get that rebound! when West gets the free throw; they are always present at ball games and support the team through victory and defeat. The track team may not break any world records or even make the Olympic team this year, but they will perform well. and good sportsmanship. With Deep Appreciation In recognition of his devotion to West and the high ideals he sets for each student, we dedicate the 1965 PEGASUS to our principal and friend, Mr. Robert L. Garmon. Managing a school system with 700 students and 30 faculty members is no small task. Mr. Garmon has guided us one step at a time, always striving to make West the best. For these quali- ties, we express our deepest gratitude and appreciation. Soon the long halls, the bright class- rooms, and the long cafeteria line were all familiar surroundings. People who had never seen each other before became best friends. The phrase we used to do turned into we ' re going to do -- we are still doing. Then the day came when we were proud juniors. We found ourselves doing traditional things. In December, the junior play, A Man Called Peter was presented. At a class meeting, we decided upon our motto, Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers ; our flower, the red rose; and our colors, red and white. Ah! The life of a junior is so short. Can it be that we are on top? that we are seniors? that we set the example? 32 BOBBY ALAN VONCANNON DANNY LOY WADKINS ANITA ERNESTINE WHITLEY DONNA AILEEN WHITLEY NANCY PAULETTE WHITLEY MARSHALL LEE WHITLEY SARA LYNETTE WHITLEY but wisdom lingers. HOMECOMING QUEEN The alumni of West Stanly were certainly please- ed with the seniors ' choice for the 1964 Homecoming Queen, Miss Janice Hinson. She is the lovely 5 ' 5 1 2 , brown-eyed, brunette who greets everyone with a friendly smile. Janice looked stunning as she was escorted down the field by Dexter Hinson. Mr. Garmon crowned Janice the 1964 Homecoming Queen after she stepped through the enormous green and white horseshoe. Andria Barbee, president of the Beta Club, presented her with a dozen red roses. Then she and her court reigned over the remainder of the ball game. This charming blonde is Cheri Carter, who was Maid of Honor for our 1954 Homecoming. Cheri was escorted onto the field by Hoyt Almond and looked radiant as she walked through the arch. She was chosen by the senior class of which she is a most outstanding member. This vivacious senior finds time for many extra-curricular acti- vities besides her classwork. JUNIOR ATTENDANTS Sandra Almond, looking very charming, was escorted on the field by Bobby Huneycutt. She appeared under the horseshoe and then took her place on the forty-yard line. Directly following her came the other lovely junior attendant. Nancy Lowder, escorted by Larry Efird, took her place. Poised and smiling, Miss Lana Morgan added her charm to the Queen ' s court. Wallace Mc- Lendon was her escort. Larry Wiley attended Miss Marilyn Helms, a vivacious blonde, who gracefully presented herself to the waiting alumni. 57 Miss Pamela Morgan was enthusiastically greeted by the spectators as she opened the 1964 Homecoming Festivities. She was accompanied throughout the ceremony by Danny Little. A petite freshman, Miss Janice Tucker, de- lighted her classmates as she made her appear- ance with Trent Morgan. Si Miss Frances Harwood, a love- ly petite blonde, was chosen Miss Merry Christmas by the entire stu- dent body. In the annual Stanly County Christmas Parade. Frances well represented West Stanly as she rode down the street waving and smiling to all. Alan Smith, senior class president, was the proud chauffeur. These marshals, who were chosen in their junior year on the basis of leadership, character, and scholastic standing, served during baccalaureate and graduation. Moonlight and Roses, a theme that will long remain in the hearts of the juniors and seniors of 1964, was animated on the magic and mystic night of May 2. The grand array of formals transformed each young lady and gentleman into princesses and princes. As the bewitching hour approached, the royal party left entranced with the memory of the evening. The fairyland became only a gym, the roses wilted, and the moon became once more hula hoops and crepe paper. 60 ass Activities ' • ' Mrt 0 , - ? ■ ' ' ■ - ' j£ J 1 i £ • ■ ir.- • A C S?3s£ T-- 1 - - . . They try to talk among themselves, in the meetings, and furing programs, as fluently as a Frenchman. However, there is a minute differ- ence, our Southern accent. The French Club is a cultural club open only to those students who are taking French or those who have completed two years. The programs vary from serious discussions to light-hearted singing. If you hear someone chattering unfamiliar or foreign sounding words, perhaps you are listening to a conversation by two French Club members who are rehearsing their part for the next French Club pro- gram. By cheerfully giving their time, the students on the store staff render a most satisfying service to their fellow students. The members of the store staff are Yugonda Huneycutt, Gloria Simpson, and Linda Burleson. Bus Drivers These calm and collected bus drivers have safely and almost always promptly transported their noisy passengers to school. Even though they have little pay and frayed nerves, our bus drivers perform a valuable service for our schools. 86 to make “West the Best.” Mr. and Mrs. Burris, come to the office please. When West Stanly students hear this announcement on the intercom, they know that one of the faithful custodians will come to the rescue of a freezing class or a similar calamity. Mr. and Mrs. Burris work many hours a day to make the school as clean and pleasant as possible. Students seldom thank them for their extra efforts, but their work is appreciated. The cafeteria staff is a hard working team that somehow manages to satisfy the hunger of our ener- getic teenagers. The nutritious and attractive meals are planned, prepared, and always served with a smile.
