FOOTBALL 7 963 With thirteen lettermen returning for the second year of the football program, the biggest problem the 1963 Colts encountered was a lack of experience and a need for a first win. This first win came in the game against Parkwood, the se- cond game of the season, on Friday, the thirteenth of September, when the Colts rolled up a 32-6 victory. The Colts were deeply pleased, the crowd was happy, and the coaches were thrilled beyond words. After this game came the days of black clouds and cold heartbreak. On one of these dark Friday evenings, West Stanly dropped a heart- breaker on Homecoming night to Harrisburg with a score of 0-6. The Colts lost a fumble in Harrisburg ' s end zone and possible victory. Then an encounter with Anson saw the Colts fall for a 13-19 loss. The grand finale of the 1963 season came with a crushing victory over Sun Valley in which the Colts walked away with a 32-13 victory. Much was learned through hard, tough ex- perience, and next year the Colts, with work and increased desire and hustle, will be capable of holding their own and moving up the ladder of the Rocky River Conference. Improvement was shown by the team effort. Individual trophies were awarded to Garland Carr, Most Valuable; Larry Wiley, Most Im- proved Back; and Gerald Winfree, Most Improved Lineman. Coaches: Mr. Whitesides; Mr. Sutton, Head; Mr. Smith; Tri-Captains: Alan Smith; Hoyt Almond; Jerry Helms. Junior Varsity Football
