4 1 ' f 1.1 Y THE Publkofion of the Yearbook Staff of WEST STANLY HIGH SCHOOL Oakboro, North Carolino IN MEMORY OF A He exemplified the finest in young manhood; He believed in and inspired young people; He served his fellow man; He marched breast forward, never doubting clouds would break. LASTON McCULLEN GRANTHAM 4 FOREWORD Because this was our second year of consolidation, we came together, a more closely-knit group. Our classmates were no long- er new faces from Endy, Ridgecrest, Oakboro, and Stanfield: they were now old friends. Our purposes, achievements, and school spirit were more evident. In the PEGASUS we have tried to capture this feeling of one- ness , of belonging. As the seasons unfold within these pages, may they bring vivid memories of your good times at West. Seniors, when we have left West, and the business of making a living and raising a family overshadow our high school days, may this book be a reminder of our two fun-filled years at West. Juniors, may this book inspire you to greater things for your class and for West. Sophomores, you will be the first graduating class to have com- pleted all four years at West. May you strive to make something better of the best. Freshmen, may you develop a fierce pride in your school. Give it standards, traditions, uniquen ess. Make it a being, not just a building. We present the 1964 edition of the PEGASUS as a chronicle of this year- -your year at West. Dianne Helms Editor Contents FALL Administration Faculty .... Classes .... WINTER Features . . . SUMMER Advertising . . 14 15 18 54 61 70 86 We didn ' t think those apples would work In the beginning . . . confusion . . . dosses September brought a new principal, a different faculty, and a huge throng of students! The eagerly awaited and sometimes dreaded opening days began with noisy chaos in the halls. New friends, new faces, new teachers, and new classes added to the hubbub. After a few weeks freshmen began finding their classes without aid and sophomores, juniors, and seniors became re-acquainted. Work and fun began; everyone knew the year was in full swing. I n in Help! October b r ou ght the long-awaited Beta tapping ceremony. The impressive candlelight ceremony brought thirty-three new members into the club. La- ter on, some would be placed on the probation list, but for the present the ecstasy of being a Beta abated their fears and aroused their hopes. Out, out, brief candle Crisp, cool autu mn days call for football and the WSHS squad rallied to their call. The squad improved this year by winning two games, one against Parkwood, the other against Sun Valley. West fans gasped when Garland Carr was incapacitated as the result of a broken collar bone. Other boys were hurt; other games were played (some lost), but WSHS students still looked to their football team to boost school spirit. Highlight of our Homecoming Game Basketball, Parties, the excitement of Christmas Sighs of Relief . . . Christmas Vacation Winter Work and Worry . . . January Exams Winter came to West Stanly High School bringing basketball season, more sock hops, Christmas vacation, mid-term exams (ugh), and (lo and be- hold!) class rings! The basketball teams won and lost, but always dis- played good sportsmanship. Everyone (teachers included) was gay after the short, exhilarating Christmas vacation. Three weeks later, mid-term examinations inter- rupted the students ' dreams of being in a Winter Wonderland . Many stu- dents burned the midnight oil cram- ming for the next day ' s exams. As the wear and tear of this experience wore off, seniors began to look toward the arrival of class rings. With February came the class rings and the revival of the annual practice of shaking hands (the better to show the ring). Winter- -another season of our fi- nal year at WSHS went by too fast! Class Rings Sparkle . . . Seniors Glow The Alpha and Mr. Shelton, Did you know there was a dog in MACBETH? The final week, graduation practice, that strange feeling of joy and nostalgia, and the excite- ment of those last days brought the year to a close. Each event was greeted by Seniors ' cries that it is the las t . Unde r c las s men realized that there would be other high school years, but each felt the sentimental feeling that there would never be another year such as this. Looking back brought memories of work, pleasure, friendship, and the realization that the year had passed with the speed of wonderful times, leaving lasting memories. 10 Watch those flying capitals ! Omega of Graduation m-, . ' ADMINISTRATION . . . aij ' .sssss — . Mr. Robert Garmon, the new principal of WSHS, graduated fromPfeiffer College with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He later earned his master ' s degree. Previously he taught at Ridgecrest and was principal at Badin Elementary School. Coming to West Stanly this year, Mr. Garmon accepted the responsibility of a consolidated high school only one year old. He quickly proved his capability as the school year began smoothly. As the school year progressed, his understanding and helpfulness earned him the respect of all the students. Everyone at West Stan- ly would like to say, Thank you, Mr. Garmon, for your unlimited patience and co-operation. 14 FACULTY . . . Mr. Z. G. Earnhardt B. This first win came in the game against Parkwood, the se- cond game of the season, on Friday, the thirteenth of September, when the Colts rolled up a 32-6 victory. The Colts were deeply pleased, the crowd was happy, and the coaches were thrilled beyond words. After this game came the days of black clouds and cold heartbreak. On one of these dark Friday evenings, West Stanly dropped a heart- breaker on Homecoming night to Harrisburg with a score of 0-6. The Colts lost a fumble in Harrisburg ' s end zone and possible victory. Then an encounter with Anson saw the Colts fall for a 13-19 loss. The grand finale of the 1963 season came with a crushing victory over Sun Valley in which the Colts walked away with a 32-13 victory. Much was learned through hard, tough ex- perience, and next year the Colts, with work and increased desire and hustle, will be capable of holding their own and moving up the ladder of the Rocky River Conference. Improvement was shown by the team effort. Individual trophies were awarded to Garland Carr, Most Valuable; Larry Wiley, Most Im- proved Back; and Gerald Winfree, Most Improved Lineman. Selected early in the year, editor Dianne Helms planned the theme, chose the cover, selected the pic- tures, laid out pages, and co-ordinated the work of this publication. Associate editor, CheryelHuneycutt, was to be of every assistance to the editor. Business manager, Avery Love, and his assistant, Roger Thompson, had the tremendous responsibility of pulling the yearbook through financially. Indivi- dual picture editor, Wanda Stewart, had the mam- moth task of picture identification. Jane Teeter, group picture editor, planned and helped super- vise the making of group pictures. Typing editor, Cheri Carter, worked continuously to be sure all the copy for the annual was typed correctly. Ad managers, Barbara Drye and Jeannine Austin, worked very hard to secure ads. Patsy Stegall was subscription editor. Dianne Helms, Editor-in-Chief; Cheryel Huneycutt, Associate Editor. Eudy Every day 670 students boarded the familiar orange school buses and rode to and from the different schools in the West Stanly area. Dependable student bus drivers transported fifteen buses full of lively riders from Endy, Locust, Oakboro, Ridgecrest and Stanfield. As the bell rang for recess, the daily scramble started for the school store. Despite the hubbub, these girls managed a smile and prompt service for everyone. LEFT TO RIGHT: Mrs. G. Hinson, Mrs. B. Barbee, Mrs. A. Tucker, Mrs. G. Williams, and Mrs. J. Smith, Behind-the-scenes Workers The cafeteria staff provided whole- some lunches each day for over six hun- dred children . The custodians, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Burris, cleaned house night and day this year for almost seven hundred students. West Stanly has been fortunate to have these dedicated people serving the school. 85 LOVE LUMBER COMPANY Of Stanfield, Incorporated — Complete Line oi Building Materials- Phone TUxedo 8-2371 Post Office Drawer 98 Stanfield North Carolina CITY DRY CLEANERS Cleaning and Pressing Repairing Oakboro, North Carolina Compliments of DUN-RITE CLEANERS HATHCOCK ' S JEWELRY Specialists in Watch and Jewelry Repair Room 202 Hill Building Albemarle, North Carolina PURCELL ' S DRUG STORE 135 West Main Street Phone YUkon 2-3218 Albemarle, North Carolina SECURITY BANK AND TRUST CO.
