Federal Funds Granted for Special Education Special education has taken on an expanded and distinctive role at WSHS. Supplemented by a federal grant of 3Sl40,000, a three-year demon- stration project is under way to train students in skills employable in a variety of service and trade organizations. An extension of the traditional academic, in- dustrial and domestic arts Iprogram, the project emphasizes on-the-job wor background, made possible lg the installation of a completely equipped omestic and Personal Service Labora- tor and Food Service Laboratory. Among the skills practiced in the labs are the operation of domestic equipment, care of patients and inva- lids, and the preparing and serving of food. The high school program is singular in that it is one of the few fpilot projects in the country to be made a part o the public school system and the only one in the state to be run by local edu- cators. Superintendent Grammaticas is director of the project. For domestic eliiciency, Miss Blish teaches Mary Kennedy, Sharon Uhl, and Susan Brennan how to operate kitchen appliances. I I 1 l Academic learning is stressed by Mr, Smith, who explains environ- mental changes in animals to Mark McCullah.
