KABO VEQ Miss Dorothy Shaw helps Dennis O'Connor pre- pare a bibliography for a term paper. fR1GHTj Richard Ryan and Bruce Theriaque listen attentively to Miss Marylou Carroll, who teaches juniors a survey course in American literature. The twelve-member English Department be- gan the year with a new Department Chairman, Joseph A. Plourde having been promoted to the position. Added to the staff were Mrs. Annette Arsenault and Miss Eliesabeth Bohlen. As a guide in curriculum development, the de- partment has been working with the Commission on English report of its five-year study of secon- dary English teaching. Also, a number of kin- escopes, issued by the Commission, demon- strating classroom practices were shown to the teachers. To supplement the regular course of study, the full series of Humanities, lilms was scheduled during the year for students in all classes.

Talking shop before a department meeting are history teachers George Johnston, George Bo- zenhard, department chairmang Mrs. Helen Cowing, and William Wyman. Histor Honors Course Added For Seniors Of special interest to seniors was the introduc- tion of an Honors History Course. Students who Work well independently and excel in history are eligible for the course. Besides the study of World and U.S. History, economics is available as an elective. The princi- ples of supply and demand, and the national and international economic situation are just a few of the topics explored in the economics class. Joining the department this year was George Johnston, who formerly taught at the junior high school. Combining world history with a little humor is sophomore instruc- tor Gordon Vye. 13 Teaching the political, economic, and so- cial development of the United States are, SEATED: John Mehegan, and Mrs. Mary Hubbard. STANDING: William Quigley, John Siepietowski, and David Crosier.

International communication is easy with the multi-lingual talents of Kenneth Ballard, new teacher of Latin, and French instructors Miss Helen Bailey and Edward Ferriter. Four Years of French Now Offered l l KABO VEQ Miss Dorothy Bugbee fSTANDINGj, department chairman, acquaints Miss Eliesabeth Bohlen, new German teacher, with departmental procedure. KRIGHTQ Angelo Laveglia is seen in a familiar after-school Spanish session. Be- side him is '4Petsy', Murray. Fourth-year French has been added to the courses offered in the Language Department. Supplementing class work, a modern laboratory facilitates the learning of foreign languages including, besides French, Latin, German, and Spanish. Each year Mr. Laveglia selects outstanding stu- dents for membership in the Spanish National Honor Society. 15
