Albert Bessette and Mrs. Alice Cowing discuss a studentis academ- ic record. Counselors Prepare For Pupil Increase To permit an increase in the staff as the num- ber of pupils increases, a new system is in opera- tion in the Guidance Department in which each counselor advises some students in all three class- es. This system anticipates the addition of several hundred students next September when the freshman class becomes part of the senior high school. David Crosier has taken on counseling respon- sibilities this year in addition to his duties as a history teacher. Gene Winterle helps counselor Milton Laufer add a festive touch to the guidance lobby. Concerned with the post high school plans of stu- dents, Department Chairman Harris Tanner sched- ules conferences and speakers to acquaint students with career opportunities. il ' Acting also as a faculty adviser to the senior history honors group, Mr. Crosier discusses a term paper topic with Jackie Compton.

Curriculum Changes Principal Robert C. Shields As the high school administrator, Prin- cipal Robert C. Shields is responsible for initiating and implementing changes which are occurring in all areas. A major procedural improvement resulted from the installation of IBM equipment, which has streamlined the voluminous record- keeping processes. An intercommunica- tions system was also put into use this year. In keeping with our growth, West Springfield now has two vice-principals to assist Mr. Shields in running the school. George A. Bauman, who assumed the position in September, works closely with teachers and students, handling problems and directing the student patrol. Because of his special training, Raymond W. Talking shop before a department meeting are history teachers George Johnston, George Bo- zenhard, department chairmang Mrs. Helen Cowing, and William Wyman. Histor Honors Course Added For Seniors Of special interest to seniors was the introduc- tion of an Honors History Course. Students who Work well independently and excel in history are eligible for the course. Besides the study of World and U.S. History, economics is available as an elective. The princi- ples of supply and demand, and the national and international economic situation are just a few of the topics explored in the economics class. Joining the department this year was George Johnston, who formerly taught at the junior high school.
