In September, West Springfield will again be a four-year school, and student capacity will be doubled from 1,000 to 2,000, with the addition of fifty-one classrooms, including fifteen laboratories. But impressive as these facilities are, they are not an end but a means. Their function is, after all, to provide an en- vironment which will permit the fullest growth of each student physically, intel- lectually, and socially. WMM df William E. They have seen the first results of the unique special education project which got under way in Septemberg and with their support, improvements have been made in other academic areas. A senior honors course Was introduced in history, as was an electronic data processing course in the Business Department. Curriculum additions were also made in science and mathematics. Among the goals set forth by Mr. Gram- maticas are expansion of industrial arts offerings for Wider vocational application, greater emphasis on the humanities, strengthening of reading improvement programs, employment of aides to assist teachers, and more in-service training opportunities for teachers. Administration Initiates V l Superintendent Chris Grammaticas SCHOOL COMMITTEE. FRONT ROW: Douglas C. Childs, BA CK ROW: Frederick M. Lindahl, Harold A. LeDuc, and Mrs. Miriam K. Cavanaugh, Chairmang John L. Chandler. Thomas I. McNamara. 10 Curriculum Changes Principal Robert C. Shields As the high school administrator, Prin- cipal Robert C. Shields is responsible for initiating and implementing changes which are occurring in all areas. A major procedural improvement resulted from the installation of IBM equipment, which has streamlined the voluminous record- keeping processes. An intercommunica- tions system was also put into use this year. In keeping with our growth, West Springfield now has two vice-principals to assist Mr. Shields in running the school. George A. Bauman, who assumed the position in September, works closely with teachers and students, handling problems and directing the student patrol. Because of his special training, Raymond W. Williamson, vice-principal here since 1962, has the added responsibility of supervising the operation of the elec- tronic equipment. Vice-Principals Raymond W. Williamson, George A. Bauman. Albert Bessette and Mrs. Alice Cowing discuss a studentis academ- ic record. Counselors Prepare For Pupil Increase To permit an increase in the staff as the num- ber of pupils increases, a new system is in opera- tion in the Guidance Department in which each counselor advises some students in all three class- es. This system anticipates the addition of several hundred students next September when the freshman class becomes part of the senior high school. David Crosier has taken on counseling respon- sibilities this year in addition to his duties as a history teacher. Gene Winterle helps counselor Milton Laufer add a festive touch to the guidance lobby. Concerned with the post high school plans of stu- dents, Department Chairman Harris Tanner sched- ules conferences and speakers to acquaint students with career opportunities. il ' Acting also as a faculty adviser to the senior history honors group, Mr. Crosier discusses a term paper topic with Jackie Compton. Talking shop before a department meeting are history teachers George Johnston, George Bo- zenhard, department chairmang Mrs. Helen Cowing, and William Wyman. Histor Honors Course Added For Seniors Of special interest to seniors was the introduc- tion of an Honors History Course. Students who Work well independently and excel in history are eligible for the course. Besides the study of World and U.S. History, economics is available as an elective. The princi- ples of supply and demand, and the national and international economic situation are just a few of the topics explored in the economics class. Joining the department this year was George Johnston, who formerly taught at the junior high school. The Senior Class - 1966 As seniors, the Class of 1966 experienced many great moments as they progressed through a year of change and decision. Some seniors anxiously awaited letters of acceptance from col- leges and various post graduate schools. Others rejoiced at securing full time jobs which they pre- pared to assume after graduation. Under the leadership of class president Robert Nowlan and the guidance of counselor Albert Bessette, committees were formed to plan the various activities which highlighted the linal year of high school. The Class Banquet was held at the Sheraton-Kimball on June 9 to cap a very important Class Day. At last, graduation was held on June 12, and another senior class was ready to face the future. Albert Bessette has been the guiding light to many of the classis students and has never failed to offer a helping hand during his three years as class adviser. SENIOR EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. On the social side, the Class of '67 expressed their individuality by choosing the Shaker Farms Country Club as the scene of the Junior-Senior Prom held on May 20. As far back as can be remembered, the prom has been held in the school gymnasium. In another break with tradition, the juniors chose round college-style class rings in contrast to the square rings ofthe seniors. In March HThe Bishop's Candlesticksi' was presented as the class play. Mrs. Alice Cowing acted as adviser to the juniors. Alan Elzerman heads his class as president for the second year. The club, under the direction of school nurse Miss Gertrude Bradley, acquaints girls with many aspects of a nursing career. Throughout the year, nurses from area hospitals spoke to the F.N.A. about educational opportunities at their schools. With the guidance of Miss Suzanne Lemieux and Mrs. Joanne Pearson, the Red Cross Club has expanded its activities. Besides helping out at local hospitals, the members held several dances at the Veterans Hospital in Leeds and sent 25 bags of gifts to Viet Nam. They also par- ticipated in the United Fund Drive and attended local inter-high Red Cross meetings and training programs.
