' J V ' v • I ' - • I : t v • f ' OrV ' ' ' ,A ‘ 7 ' ar i - PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF WEST SPRINGFIELD HIGH SCHOOL EDITOR KERRY KRAUS ADVISORS MRS. RUTH ANN CARFLEY, MISS FRANCES ANDREWS, MRS. CHARLENE GIBBENS Foreword Spartan Spirit, born one year ago, has al¬ ready become an encompassing force in the student body of West Springfield High School. But what is this Spartan Spirit everyone claims to have? Spartan Spirit ... a cheering crowd at a football game ' . . . straight A ' s ... a leader¬ ship training symposium . . . four language honor societies . . . upsetting Fort Hunt . . . The highest grade point average in Fairfax County ... a district championship in field hockey ... a national honor society . . . Pep Club ... a superior rated contest play ... an extravaganza . . . pep rallies ... a spirit beanie . . . a Spartan mascot ... a special lunch table for the team ... a victory chain . . . second place in district cross country . . . service clubs . . . Spartan Honor . . . student govern¬ ment . . . four first-place winners in the science fair ... a winning debate team . . . Sparta Week floats ... a senior-faculty basket ball game . . . Birthday Week ... a one rating in a band festival. All these things still do not completely define Spartan Spirit. It also includes those intangible things, such as pride — pride in knowing it was the student body that accom¬ plished all these things. This year has brought the fulfillment of the promise of success made when West Springfield opened one year ago. â– 0 i 5 TABLE OF STUDENT LIFE ACADEMICS 6 ACTIVITIES CONTENTS SPORTS ADVERTISEMENTS CLASSES 7 8 10 Iff-ST OjlF ; ftp T If J Jii Uw £ 16 1967 SPARTAN COURT CHRISTINE FOSTER Freshman Attendant MARSHA STEPHEN Freshman Attendant CHRIS LOBI Sophomore Attendant PAMELA PUTMAN Sophomore Attendant MARILYN McAVOY Junior Attendant JANET PFALZGRAF Junior Attendant 19 1967 SPARTAN COURT KATHE BOYD Maid of Honor LINDA GILBERT Senior Attendant JONITA HOLDENER Senior Attendant JULIA-ANNA THOMPSON Spartan Queen 21 ; A SADIE HAWKINS 22 Queen Susie Williams Peggy Lennon and John McClelland Karel Kunze and Tom Joseph 24 Celeste Shumsky and Pete Amshey Pat LeGros and Bob Mallon Mary Downey and Dave Thompson SWEETHEART COURT Sue Odom and Bob Carver Marcy Kunze and Bruce Boyd 25 JUNIOR-SENIOR BASKETBALL GAME Senior players: Front row, left to right: Phil Rowe, Richard Roberts, Scott Ranney, John Kraus. Waiting to sign the 50-foot card are Libby Parker, Linda Gilbert, and Rick Hughes. West Springfield, proud of the accomplishments of the past year, celebrated its first birthday with typical Spartan Spirit. Students began planning Birthday Week with great en¬ thusiasm. A birthday cake decked with candles, a dress- up day, assemblies, a dance, cheerfully decorated halls, and a birthday card that was 50 feet long all helped to estab¬ lish another WS tradition. 28 Mike Young, President of the Junior Class blows balloons to be sold by the Junior Class. Tom Joseph and Cathy Wilson unite on a big blow . BIRTHDAY WEEK Cheering to the music of the pep band are Donna Reino, Marcy Kunze, and Karel Kunze. 29 Time for a break after a long rehearsal. A last minute check of the lines before going on. Mr. Hayden ponders the set arrangement. BO OUT OF THE FRYING PAN i Gosh, I wonder how they ' re doing on stage. SENIOR PLAY- THE CURIOUS SAVAGE Work detail. There ' s a part for everyone. Mr. Hasselvander supervises set construction. Who me? Forget my lines? 33 mM m ABDULAZIZ ALFULAIJ Abdulaziz Alfulaij received a scholarship from his country, Kuwait, to study in the United States. Although he has only been here for one year, he has already formed definite opinions about many things: school cafeterias— Sometimes they have good food, but it ' s not always enough. And if they have something I can ' t eat, like pork, I just . . . starve! ... the fact that in his country students have more respect for their teachers— In my country, the teacher is sort of the King of the class. When he enters, every¬ one stands up to signify that you realize here is someone who knows more than you do. ... his five nicknames— I prefer Aziz but some people call me ' As was ' , . . . the culinary habits of West Springfield ' s students— Some people think I ' m weird because I don ' t chew gum in class! , . . . and our school system— American schools are easier ... I think! CARL BENNET Carl Bennet came to America to stay with his uncle for a year because I became tired of schools in Sweden. Carl, dragging his 6 ' 6 frame into the cramped yearbook office, was a bit appre¬ hensive about being interviewed. It is a pity that his facial reactions can ' t be shown here (example—when asked about school lunches he flinched and stuck out his tongue) but Carl did offer many interest¬ ing opinions on the following topics: Volkswagens— I have a hard time fitting into them. . . . Swedish schools— We can bring beer and cigarettes to school and if we get mad at the teacher we can walk out of class. . . . Hippies— We don ' t have any in Sweden. The Swedish are so liberal that there is nothing for them to op¬ pose! . . . his childhood— I was born July 8, 1950, and was a very big child! . . . Swedish inhibitions-—- About 25% of what you hear is true! JOSE TAVARA MARTIN Jose came to the U.S. under the International Fellowship Program. He taught Algebra-Trig to his stateside friends but never quite managed to figure out the meaning of the word frog. Our thirteen-year-old prodigy takes chemistry and physics, and is the only freshman enrolled in Algebra-Trigonometry. Jose became easily familiarized with America n life (except for the fact that he still refuses to drink milk at lunch) and admits that the United States is not so very different from Peru! He thoroughly enjoyed the film The Birds and mystified us with the knowledge that Doctor Zhivago was shown to adults only in Peru. Standards in Peru are also similar to ours, except for the fact that they prefer European cars (especially Fiats) to American cars. 34 JULIA FERRARI Julia, a native of Argentina, is a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn P. Brooks. She finds the United States very different from her country, but likes our school system better because you are freer to learn more things. She thinks our teachers are friendly and our school lunches are passable. She has a great deal of diffi¬ culty understanding our slang but had no trouble learning the latest dances. An active member of Keyettes, she feels they have done a lot of good work. Julia hates watching television ( I have other things I would rather do! ), loves basketball, swimming, and American highways ( the roads in Argentina aren ' t very good! ). She thinks our political system is a very difficult thing to talk about but says she admired President Kennedy very much. Julia also informed us that there are many hippies in Argentina and they are always being arrested and taken away. She will miss the United States and hopes to come back soon for a visit. EXCHANGE STUDENTS NURA GONZALEZ Nuris is visiting the United States from Mexico, and plans to stay with us one year. She is living with her sister, Mrs. Robert Miller. Nuris only studied the English language for five months before coming to America, but has no trouble expressing her feelings about West Springfield High School, which she likes very much. She has readily adapted to our tastes and customs and she likes rock and roll music. One thing in particular that left an impression on her was the movie Bonnie and Clyde which she really enjoyed. She loves playing volleyball and admits that in Mexico, as here at West Springfield, teachers disapprove of miniskirts. DINEKA DAALMEIJER Dineka Daalmeijer will return home to Holland this summer but will leave behind many fond remembrances of the U. S., in¬ cluding: Christmas caroling for Mr. DeCarlo . . . the American idea of going steady, especially the ring, which I think is symbolic, . . . Keyettes— I love it because we ' re always doing something. I hate clubs where you just sit and listen! . . . orange juice— Of course, we have it in Holland, but no one there drinks it for break¬ fast! . . . our teachers— It ' s really great the way I can go up and talk to them about little things. . . . and her friends at West Springfield, Everyone here is someone special! 35 Left to right: Mike Stafford, John Doyal, John Ball, Andy Syrett, Mark Rae, Mike Christofferson, Mrs. Durie. 36 â– SB WS It ' s Academic team takes a first place on its first appearance on Matt McGarry ' s TV show. IT’S ACADEMIC 37 38 FRANK C. KLEY B.S., M.A. George Washington University Principal PRINCIPAL You who enter West Springfield High School are in¬ vited to secure on education so flexible that you will be able to think independently and to adjust your knowledge to meet the demands of an uncertain future. Many biased and highly disturbing voices call to young people in this time of crisis. Admittedly, science is important, but science alone is not enough. Arts and literature are valuable, but insufficient. The present need is a balance between the materialistic and the aesthetic, between the physical and the cultural. In such an environment will your lives realize their full potential. West Springfield High offers a program of studies em¬ phasizing a three-fold education of head, heart, and hand which is your answer in your search for the most meaningful future. Spartans who leave these halls as the first graduates will take with them the motto TRUTH, WISDOM, AND HONOR as they fill positions of trust in the world, confident that their high-school education was begun by a dedicated and competent faculty who were interested in seeing their stu¬ dents develop a philosophy of their own which will bring them joy and satisfaction. ' ll! SENIOR CLASS The Senior year is traditionally regarded by aspiring underclassmen as the exciting and dramatic finale to high school. The “senior has come to symbolize increased freedom, privileges, and newly required maturity-—in short, a thrilling life. The Class of ' 68 was the first to graduate from West Springfield High School. By consistently upholding true Spartan ideals, Seniors set a fine example for underclassmen. Although many students experienced the traditional Senior Slump, spirit soared high this year as Seniors divided their loyalties between school and Grog. In September, Senior thoughts turned to college boards, graduation announcements, and class ranks. How¬ ever, the two spaghetti dinners and the production of The Curious Savage released the Seniors from their intense pressures. The prom featuring the Swinging Medallions will hold a special place in the Senior ' s moments to remember. Graduation opened new doors to Seniors and brought to a close the past twelve years of accomplishment. As Seniors reluctantly turned their backs on their high school days, a life with more responsibilities and new experiences began. 150 President, Mike Galasso Spaghetti King Senator, Jane Beach; Treasurer, Jonni Holdener; V.
