John Davis was appointed as principal, many months before ground was actually broken for the campus complex on Rolling Road. From his small office in Robert E. Lee High School, Mr. Davis amassed a faculty and set up a master schedule of classes slated to begin operation in September 1966. Assistant principals Frank C. Kley and William E. Jackson, Jr. were appointed shortly after Mr. Davis, and together they super¬ vised activities during the summer months which resulted in a nucleus of students from W. T. Woodson and Robert E. Lee High Schools who formed a provisional Student Government and made plans to welcome the student body. Classes met at Lee High on a staggered schedule for the first semester from 10:30 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. Clubs were organized, athletic teams formed, and musical groups assembled which held their practice sessions at 7:30 a.m. Most challenging task of the new student body was choosing a school emblem, colors, and theme that would become an integral part of the sixteenth high school in the county. Navy blue and burnt orange exemplifies the Spartan spirit which already manifests itself in the student body as they adopt the Greek letters TRUTH, WISDOM, AND HONOR as their motto. New publications, deciding to follow the Greek theme also, chose Olympian to be the name of the yearbook, Oracle for the newspaper, and Symposium for the art-literary magazine. Literally brick by brick progress on the new school was reported daily by students as they rode by the site. Anticipation ran high as word was spread that we would move on January 30, 1967! Two hundred members of clubs came on the Saturday and Sunday before the transition to move furniture, unpack books and equip¬ ment, and arrange bulletin boards for teachers. The Pep Band and Baton Corps met Spartans at the doors with rousing music on January 30, and classes began in the new building with no lapse in instruction time. This is unique, says Mr. Davis, but I ' ve already seen evidence during our first semester that nothing can stop a Spartan when there ' s an unusual job to be done! Nearly ail of the staff and faculty have given needed support and encouragement to the scores of newly formed extracurricular activities which characterize a modern high school. The challenge of such an eager student body seems to bring out the best in all of us, says another principal. Parents have been equally active in their support of all activities and most generous of their assistance where financial aid was needed. For their response, we thank our community. . . . And so in 1966 a school is born . . . may it grow in wisdom, stature, and honor, and in favor with God and man. 2 m 8 £ m 5 M iil caidcra t peRspectives 4 5 6 7 January 30, 1967—First day of class¬ es in West Springfield High School! Looks as if I might get a shower today. 25 exchange Students fpom Brazil Amerigo Carlos Basile, from Sao Paulo, Brazil, proved to be an exciting, effervescent addition to WSHS when he came with Olga to spend his vacation with us. His comments were typical: I must be losing my mind to come here in all this snow when I could be on the beach in Rio! However, he admitted that he loved his new family and brother, Steve Ulrich, and said they made it worthwhile leaving his own family for a time. Carlos plans to become an engineer and took classes in mechanical drawing, analytical algebra, and electronics as well as government, English, and journalism. He says he is coming back to see us, and we surely hope he does. Olga Regina Cardoza, from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, spent her summer vacation with us for three months as part of the first Exchange Student program at West Springfield, under the di¬ rection of Mr. Elgyn Julca, chairman of the department of Foreign Languages. Although acknowledging that American life is con¬ fusing, Olga entered heartily into the sport, parties and activities hosted by her sister, Linda Lawrence. She plans to become a teacher in her own country and says that her practice in speaking English while here will be a great help to her. 26 6ssay WinneR Junior Scott Seadler, American history student of Mr. Lawrence W. Hatch, won the local district contest sponsored by the Spring- field-Franconia Lion ' s Club for all the highschools in the area. His peace Essay was judged the best entry and was entered in the regional contest. wshs SweetheaRts The Sweetheart Dance, the first big one in our new school, was held in the 1 Cafeteria on February 25 amid lovely decorations and beautiful people. The following girls were chosen by a vote of the student body to be members of the Sweetheart Court: left to right, Joel Reeher, Donna Giarratanna, Linda Gilbert, Marcy Kunze, Jill Hanna, Susan Odom, Jonni Holdener, and Pat Payne. In the final run-off, Linda Gilbert received the most votes and was crowned Sweetheart Queen , and Susan Odom was Maid-of-Honor. 27 S v £?il$w tWMZ ' MW pcincipAL S. JOHN DAVIS Principal B. S. Indiana State University of Penn. M. A. George Washington University To this extremely capable, firmly dedicated, and sincerely interested principal came the task of building the newest high school in Fairfax County — not out of bricks and mortar, but out of flesh and blood. It was his job to mold a faculty full of high ideals, aspirations for the future, and esprit d ' corps. That he has done this to perfection is proved by the fact that West Springfield High School faculty and students have a high degree of morale and respect for each other, due perhaps most of all to the interest and inquisitiveness shown by Mr. Davis in ALL phases of school life, from athletics to academics. Tis not in mortals to command success, But we ' ll do more, Sempronius, — we ' ll deserve it. — Joseph Addison 30 Mr. Davis seriously considers a solution to a problem in on early morning conference. He can take a joke good-naturedly, too. During the magazine drive, prizes were the coveted Snarl, and students presented this one to him appropriately labeled. He ' s first in line at the refreshment table during the lighter moments of a principal ' s busy schedule. 31 Assistant principal fop APministRation Is that really a good excuse for missing class? JUNIORS are underfoot, underfed, under-appre¬ ciated, and misunderstood. Underclassmen idolize them, seniors fraternize with them, teachers marvel at them, and the Administration tolerates them. JUNIORS are ambitious, daring, and exposed nerve endings, racing from frenzied basketball games to the quietness of the library. JUNIORS can squeeze thirty-six hours into every day, yet find the days too short and the minutes too long. They have climbed over half the educational ladder, yet know there are still giant steps to sur¬ mount before the crest is reached. JUNIORS are a kaleidoscope of surprises, and will surge forth chasing laughter, the unknown, food, and the opposite sex, yet plod along in a funeral pro¬ cession for classes, work, rules, and adults. TOMORROW we will remember a year of spa¬ ghetti and football, the chosen few and the TeePee Patrol, the Herndon Hornets and picnics, the class rings and madras cumberbunds at the prom. But we WILL remember. . . 123 MARY AIKEN BARBARA ALEXANDER PATRICIA ADAMS junioRS MARK ALLEN LINDA ANDERSON SALLY ALLING NANCY ANDERSON PETER AMSHEY ERIC ARBITER 124 PATRICIA ARDUINI ALAN AUSTIN LAWERENCE BALLOU ROBERT BARR CATHY BAUMANN REGINIA BAUMANN JANE BEACH SUSAN BEALL MARY BEDDOW 125 SHERRY BERNIER THOMAS BETHEA WILLIAM BIGLER WILLIAM BLOCHER CATHERINE BIRCH SANDRA BITTING •••• ELLEN BOSSERMAN THOMAS BOSWELL BRUCE BOYD JULIANN BOYD KATHLEEN BOYD WINFRED BOYD juniORS JANET BROWN GREGORY BRYANT WILLIAM BUCHANAN MICHAEL BUCKO CHRISTOPHER BURDETTE BARBARA BURRIS juniors ANGELA CACCIATORE BARBARA CALVERT LINDA CARRARO ROBERT CARVER ROBERT CATON ALVIN CHESSER 128 KEVIN CLIFFORD JACQUELYN CHURCHWELL THOMAS CLARKE PAMELA CODY SUSAN COONE NORA COCORAN GARY CORBRLY KENNETH CRUISE JOHN CULVER 129 MARILYN CURRY MARK CURTIS JACQUELINE DAVIES HUGH DE JARNETTE LOUISE DEMAS WESLEY DENNIS GWENDOLYN DE YOUNG JOHN DICK 130 MARGARET DOWNEY JOHN DOYAL JANE DURRER JOHN ELLISON f KAREN ENSRUD ELIZABETH FARLEY THOMAS FAULS ELEANOR FEATHERALL SANDRA FERGUSON 131 junious LAURA FITZPATRICK JEFFREY FLYNN JANET FORBES KAREN FOULK KATHERINE FOULK SUSAN FORD CATHIE FREDA ROBERT FREY SCOTT FRIEDMAN 132 r SHIRLEY FRYE MICHAEL GALASSO MAUREEN GALLAGHER JERRY GARDNER LAURA GARRITY CARYN GARDNER ROBERT GERVAIS LINDA GILBERT THOMAS GERMAINE 133 juniORS PEGGY GORDON BRUCE GORDON COURTNEY GORDON NANCY GOSSAGE TIMOTHY GRAAFF WILLIAM GREENER PAMELA GRIGGS DORIS GREFENSTETTE RONALD GREVERT JOHN GROUX NAOMI HARRIS VAUGHN HARRIS CHRISTINA HARRISON DORIS HARROVER RANDOLPH HASE JILL HASZARD THERESE HAYNES STEPHANIE HEFTI junioRs LEE HENDERSON LYNN HENRY BRENDA HELDEBRAND MAX HILDRETH DAWN HILL SUSAN HINSON KATHERINE HOFFMAN JONITA HOLDENER 136 JEFFREY HOLM ELIZABETH HORTON LYNN HOSKINS JEFFREY HOURT RICHARD HUGHES ALAN HUNTER JOHN HUNTER BARBARA HUTCHERSON DEBORAH HUTCHINSON : 137 SANDRA KAWOLICS PATRICIA KEMP ROBIN KIRBY 138 lumoRs GEORGIANN KLIEFOTH GEORGE KOLLINZAS JOHN KRAUS KERRY KRAUS KAREL KUNZE LILLIAN LAUCK 139 BETTY LENNON DANIEL LESTER LINDA LOGAN CHRISTINE LONG MARY LUNDBERG MARTHA LYNCH NANCY MAC CAFFRAY GAVIN MAC WILLIAM CYNTHIA MADDENS 140 jumoRs ROBERT MALLON WILLIAM MALONE SUSAN MANN DEBORAH MARSH HUGH MARTINEZ JULE MASSEY MATTHEW MC CANN NANCY MC CLELLAND PENELOPE MAXEY 141 JULIE MC CONNELL JANET MC CORMACK LANEY MC CUTCHEON urn KATHRYN MC FADYEN KATHLEEN MC GOVERN JOSEPH MC GRANN SHEILA MEADE BEVERLY MERCHANT 142 MICHAEL MINTON RICHARD MITTON PATRICIA MILLER MARVA MOORE BONNIE MOSS ANNE MONSON lumoRs FRANCIS MULLEN DANIEL MULLIGAN VICKI MUNCK 143 WILLIAM MUNDIE MARSHALL MUROS SHERRY NATTO junioRs SHEPHEN NEISH ELLEN NEUMAN JAY NICHOLS GERALD OGLESBAY RANDOLPH NOBLES PATRICK O ' CONNOR 144 RICHARD OLIN DEBORAH OPDYKE DONNA PADGETT I THOMAS PAINTER WARREN PAUL MARGARET PAVELL JAMES PAYNE PATRICIA PAYNE MARILYN PETRASEK 145 WILLIAM PLETTE juniORS KATHLEEN PIECH WAYNE POMPELL PAMELA PORTER TRUDY PORTER 146 LOU PROST MARK RAE CAROL RAMATOWSKI rw SCOTT RANNEY RANDELL REDD GILBERT REED 147 GAYLEN RICARD GAIL RICKETTS GARY RINGOLD RICHARD ROBERTS FRANCIS ROCHE CARL ROTHLISBERGER KEITH RUSSELL MARINA SAVENKO CURTIS ROUSSE 148 junioRs LANNY SEAGRAVES JOHN SCRUTON ANN SCHWEMLEY SCOTT SEADLER MIKE SHAFER HUNTER SHARP EDWARD SHAUKLAS JACKIE SHEARIN JOSELYN SHIPMAN DONNA SHUMATE MEREDITH SIDLE CELESTE SHUMSKY DIANE SISK JEFFREY SKEEN DAVID SMITH junioRs MICHAEL STAFFORD MICHELE SPERRY STEPHEN SMITH GERALD STALEY SUSAN STEINBACH RALEIGH STEINHAUER MARK STOCKWELL WANDA STONE OLIVER STREET 151 NOEL STRINGER ROSEMARY STRONG SUSAN SWAN ROBERT SWEETLAND ANDREW SYRETT MARGARET SYMANOWSKI EDWARD TEMPLEMAN FREDDIE THACKET JAMES THOMAS 152 juniops MARCIA THOMAS MARSHA THOMAS WILLIAM THOMAS JULIA THOMPSON ELLENCLAIRE TRATTNER PATRICK TAYLOR VERA TUCKER STEVEN ULRICH PHILLIP VOSS 153 WILLIAM WAGONER DONALD WALNES PATRICK WEIR STEVE WHITEHOUSE THATCHER WILLEY 154 CAROL WILSON SUSAN WILLIAMS DAVID WILLIS jumoRs CATHLENE WILSON WILLIAM WINN THOMAS WILSON DONALD WILSON GEOFFRY WOERNER ELVIE WOLFE 155 LAURIE YATTAW Not Pictured: PAULA BEGLEY ELIZABETH CHRISTENSON KATHY DILLON WILLIAM FARRAR SHARON KELLY JOHN MONAHAN YVONNE RAMEY ROBIN RATY DAVID ROMAINE CRAIG SELLERS RICHARD SKINNER 156 Boys of the Junior Class make like cheerleaders to spur the team to victory in the Junior-Faculty match.
