aaa l9,6S1:HwE The first Springfield High School was built in 1867. Before this, was the Springfield Academy, built in 1853. Prof. John A. Austin, was founder. By 1855 there was an enroll- ment of 165 students in the eight grades. The academy was destroyed by fire in 1859, and in 1867 part of the present building was erected. Prof. Cumming was the first principal of the second academy. The building was used as an academy until the fall of 1893. There were still just eight grades. In 1896 two more grades were added. The first class to graduate was in March 31, 1898. Lizzie Hedon Everette was the first principal of the high school year. Third teacher, Miss Mae Seymour, was added in 1897. The years 1902-1903 brought no graduates. In 1904, the first twelfth grade graduated. Our building was changed from a two year high school to a four year high school in 1903. The first class to graduate from the new four year high school was in 1904. Our high school has inspired each class on to higher goals and achievements. The classes that have left our alma mater have gone out into the world knowing that their future will be more easily conquered because of the excellent backing of the faculty, who have endeavored to prepare us for, and help us solve the problems of the future. The classes before, like us, are the history of our school. Each day, they entered through these doors, unaware that they were making history. Students of today will be the parents of tomorrow. We hope that our children will enter through these doors better prepared through our education, and will in turn provide history for the future. As the doors close behind us, we will always have pleasant memories of our days at Springfield. We can face the world with knowledge that we have accomplished many things which will enable us to fulfill our missions in life. Now that our high school days at Springfield are over, it is with great regret that we say goodbye to our school. We probably have a greater degree of sadness than have other groups of Seniors to ever graduate from Springfield. We will have no alma mater to cheer for, in fact, we will not have an alma mater to which we can return to visit. And, so, we take this opportunity to say, Goodbye, Springfield High School. Goodbye, from us, and all those who share many pleasant memories of your glorious past.
